Neither centralized exchanges (CEXs) nor decentralized perpetual venues are automatically cheaper or safer. A CEX generally administers your account and collateral; a decentralized venue may let you trade from a wallet through smart contracts. Both expose leveraged positions to price moves, funding payments, and liquidation. A fair comparison must include custody, total trading costs, market quality, and the rules that apply to the exact product and jurisdiction.
What changes when you trade perpetuals on a CEX or a decentralized venue?
A perpetual futures contract is a derivative without a conventional expiry date. Its funding mechanism transfers payments between long and short position holders to help keep the contract price aligned with a spot or index reference. Funding is not necessarily a fee charged by the venue: depending on the rate and the position side, a trader may pay or receive it. The formula and payment cadence vary by market and platform.
The main difference between venue types is the arrangement around your account, collateral, and trade execution—not whether the position can lose money. A CEX commonly administers customer balances and matches orders within its own system. A decentralized perpetual protocol may use wallet signatures and smart contracts to handle trades or collateral. The label alone does not establish who controls assets, what can trigger a withdrawal, or which services the trade depends on. Check the specific product’s mechanics.
Leverage adds a separate economic risk on either type of venue. If a position’s equity falls below its maintenance-margin requirement, the venue or protocol may reduce or close it. Liquidation thresholds, procedures, and charges are product-specific; wallet control does not prevent an active leveraged position from being liquidated.

How to compare the full cost of a perpetual trade
Do not compare only the advertised trading-fee rate. The total cost depends on the order, market, holding period, account tier, funding, and route used to move collateral. Funding can accumulate while a position remains open, even if the opening trade has a low fee.
- Maker and taker fees: Check the current rate for the order type and account or volume tier you would actually use. Do not assume a rate advertised for one tier applies to your account.
- Funding: Check the current rate, calculation method, payment cadence, and which side pays for the exact contract. Rates change; a displayed rate is not a guarantee of what a longer-held position will pay or receive.
- Liquidation-related charges: Review whether a charge applies when a position is reduced or closed through liquidation and how the venue or protocol handles the remaining collateral.
- Network, bridge, or conversion costs: Include these only when they apply to the path you will use to fund, trade, or withdraw. A wallet-based route can involve transaction costs that are not part of the contract’s quoted trading fee.
- Execution costs: Consider the spread, available market depth, and the possibility that an order fills at a different price than expected, especially when liquidity is thin or markets move quickly.
To make a useful comparison, use the same underlying market, notional exposure, order type, collateral, expected holding period, and entry and exit assumptions for both venues. Record the fee tier and funding assumption separately. If you do not know future funding, treat it as variable rather than projecting one observed rate across the whole holding period. Without current, normalized fee and market data for named platforms, there is no defensible universal cheapest venue.

What to check before choosing a venue
| Comparison area | Questions for a centralized exchange | Questions for a decentralized perpetual venue |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral and withdrawals | Who administers the account balance? What are the withdrawal terms and conditions? | Do you retain wallet control? Which contracts, bridges, or custodians handle collateral, if any, and what conditions affect withdrawals? |
| Trading fees | What are the current maker and taker rates for your account tier, and do volume or token discounts apply? | What protocol or market fees apply? Are network, bridge, or conversion costs added on your route? |
| Funding | How is funding calculated, when is it paid, and where can you see the rate for the contract? | What formula and payment cadence apply to the exact market, and where is the current rate shown? |
| Liquidation | What are the maintenance-margin requirement, liquidation price, and any liquidation charges? | What conditions trigger liquidation? Which oracle and liquidity sources are used, and what transaction conditions can affect execution? |
| Market quality and execution | What are the contract’s spread, depth, uptime, and execution conditions? | What are the market’s spread and depth, and what oracle, validator, or other execution dependencies matter? |
| Access and recourse | Which legal entity provides the service, where is the product available, and what support or complaint route applies? | What jurisdictional restrictions apply, and what governance or support mechanisms exist? |
These are questions to investigate, not claims that every venue follows the same design. Read the current terms for the exact contract and product; fees, collateral rules, leverage limits, and access can differ even within a single brand.
Risks that remain—and risks that differ
Risks on both types of venue
- Market and leverage risk: A sharp price move can magnify losses and trigger liquidation. The margin rules and liquidation process—not the venue’s custody label—determine how a leveraged position is handled.
- Funding and liquidity risk: Funding can change during the holding period, while thin liquidity can make entry, exit, or liquidation more costly or difficult than expected.
- Operational and access risk: A venue’s availability, account or wallet access, and execution depend on its systems and operating conditions.
Additional dependencies to examine on a decentralized protocol
Wallet control does not remove reliance on the protocol. Depending on its design, a trade may depend on smart-contract code, an oracle, a bridge, liquidity sources, transaction inclusion, or governance decisions. These are not uniform across decentralized venues. Identify which dependencies the specific product has rather than assuming every protocol uses the same architecture.

Centralized custody and liquidation exposure
When collateral sits within a centralized venue’s account and custody system, access and withdrawals are subject to that venue’s account, operational, and legal arrangements. Matching and liquidation also follow its processes. Review the applicable account terms and liquidation rules instead of treating an exchange balance as equivalent to assets held in your own wallet.

Availability and legal protections depend on the jurisdiction, legal entity, and instrument. A regulated futures product offered by one entity in the United States does not establish that a similarly named offshore product—or a decentralized protocol—has the same status or protections. Verify the exact entity and contract available to you, along with local restrictions and the service’s complaint or support route.

A practical decision checklist
- Identify the exact product. Confirm the contract, underlying market, legal entity or protocol, and whether you can access it where you live.
- Map the collateral route. Establish who controls or administers assets at each stage, how withdrawals work, and whether a bridge, custodian, or contract is involved.
- Estimate costs for your intended trade. Use your actual fee tier and order type, then account for funding over the intended holding period, relevant liquidation charges, and applicable network or bridge costs.
- Review liquidation and execution rules. Find the maintenance-margin requirement, liquidation trigger, and the mechanisms or market conditions that affect closing a position.
- Assess dependencies and recourse. For a CEX, understand the account and support arrangements. For a protocol, identify its code, oracle, liquidity, transaction, and governance dependencies where applicable.
- Compare like with like and recheck terms. Use the same exposure and assumptions across venues, and verify fees, funding, product availability, and rules directly before trading because these can change.
