Schedule the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create a watch page you can share and let viewers use for reminders. Add a countdown or schedule screen separately in your encoder, using a browser-source overlay or a locally prepared scene if your encoder supports it; preview and test the result before going live.
YouTube’s scheduling feature and the graphic shown in the stream are separate: Studio manages the event, while the encoder puts the visual into the video feed. Exact controls vary by encoder, so check its current instructions as well as YouTube’s.
Choose how to show the countdown or schedule screen
| Option | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Browser-source overlay | Add an overlay URL as a browser source in a compatible encoder. | Confirm the encoder supports browser sources, set the source dimensions to match your stream, and check its size and position in preview. |
| Locally prepared scene or media | Build the countdown or schedule screen with local sources supported by your encoder. | Check how easily you can update event details, whether the media works offline, and whether the countdown needs manual control. |
YouTube documents a browser-source setup for its break overlay, but support and controls vary among encoders. That documentation does not establish a particular countdown service or encoder as best for this task.
Schedule the YouTube event and add your screen
- Schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, choose Manage, then Schedule Stream. Create a new event or reuse prior settings. YouTube says scheduling lets you promote the stream, share its URL, and give viewers the option to receive reminders.
- Design the screen. Prepare a readable opening scene with the stream title, scheduled start time, and countdown or schedule details if desired. Keep times and time zones clear for your audience.
- Add the visual in your encoder. For a web overlay, add a browser source, paste the overlay URL, and set its dimensions to match the stream resolution. For another source type, follow the selected encoder’s current instructions.
- Connect the encoder. Enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as sensitive: YouTube describes it as like the stream’s password and address. Reset it if compromised.
- Preview and test. Start the encoder feed, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and confirm the intended scene and overlay appear correctly. Test with representative audio and video movement, and check stream health.
- Go live and close cleanly. When the preview is ready, start the stream from Live Control Room. At the end, stop the YouTube stream and encoder using the platform workflow.
Test before your financial broadcast
Run a test stream before an important event. Verify that the title and scheduled time are legible, the countdown or schedule screen is visible in the preview, and audio and video behave as intended. YouTube recommends testing and checking stream health; its overlay guidance also recommends testing the overlay before going live.

Do not assume a scheduled event automatically places a countdown graphic in the video. The event page is managed through YouTube Studio; the on-stream screen depends on the encoder and the sources it supports. Review the current YouTube and encoder instructions because interface labels and controls can change.
Keep the stream key private
Your encoder needs the stream URL and key to send video to YouTube. Because the key functions like a password, do not share it publicly or include it in a visible screen capture. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.

FAQ
Does scheduling a YouTube Live stream add a countdown to the video?
No. Scheduling creates the event and watch page, which can be shared and can offer viewers reminders. A countdown shown in the video feed is a separate visual that you add through your encoder.
Can I use a browser source for a countdown screen?
A browser source is one documented way to add a web overlay in a compatible encoder. Support and setup vary, so follow the encoder’s instructions and verify the source in the Live Control Room preview.

Do I need a Stream Deck or other dedicated hardware?
The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish dedicated hardware as necessary for adding a countdown or schedule screen. Use the features available in your encoder and add physical controls only if they suit your broader live-production workflow.
What should I check before going live?
Confirm the intended scene and overlay are visible in preview, test representative audio and video movement, check stream health, and keep the stream key private. YouTube recommends testing before the event.
