The Trump administration’s Deferred Resignation Program (DRP), widely called the “Fork in the Road” offer, originally required federal workers to respond by February 6, 2025. A federal judge paused that deadline the same day. The court dissolved its pause on February 12 on procedural grounds, and the administration then closed the offer to new acceptances. The reported acceptance count rose from roughly 40,000 on February 6 to about 75,000 by February 12.
When did the federal buyout offer expire?
The offer’s original response deadline was February 6, 2025, according to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) agreement. The agreement described continued pay and benefits during the deferred resignation period, which could run no later than September 30, 2025, subject to its terms. The February 6 deadline was not the date the offer ultimately closed to new acceptances: the administration closed it on February 12.

How many federal workers accepted?
Contemporaneous reporting gave two administration-reported counts: roughly 40,000 acceptances as of February 6, attributed to Leavitt, and about 75,000 by February 12, attributed to Pinover. These figures describe different dates, so they are not competing estimates for the same moment. The cited reports do not present an independently audited total.
Is the federal employee buyout still open?
No. The 2025 offer was closed to new acceptances on February 12, 2025. The cited agreement and news reports establish no current deadline or present-day offer. They also do not establish individual participant outcomes or a verified long-term count of workers who ultimately left.

What did the offer provide?
Under the OPM agreement, employees who accepted would continue receiving pay and benefits during the deferred resignation period, subject to the agreement’s conditions. That period could last no later than September 30, 2025. The term “buyout” can suggest a standard retirement or lump-sum package, but the documented offer was a deferred resignation arrangement; the available terms do not establish that it was a retirement package.
