How to Add Stablecoin Payments to a Website

Accepting stablecoins means choosing a checkout route, checking asset and network compatibility, and reconciling confirmed payments to orders before fulfillment.

You can accept stablecoin payments through an ecommerce platform’s built-in checkout, a hosted checkout or payments API, or a direct blockchain integration. The right route depends on where your business and customers are, which stablecoin-and-network combinations you want to support, how you want to receive funds, and how much payment-processing work you can manage. Whichever route you choose, do not mark an order paid just because a transaction was broadcast: verify that the correct payment was confirmed and matched to that order.

Choose how you will accept stablecoins

Start with the simplest option that meets your requirements. A platform feature usually means less custom development; a hosted provider can supply checkout and payment-status tools; a direct integration offers more control but leaves more detection and reconciliation work to you.

Route What it provides What you still need to verify or manage
Native ecommerce checkout A payment option built into your ecommerce platform. Merchant eligibility, supported regions, token and network coverage, payout behavior, and platform-specific restrictions.
Hosted checkout or payments API A provider-created payment session or invoice, checkout flow, and payment-status reporting; some providers also support conversion, settlement, refunds, or subscriptions. Provider eligibility, jurisdiction coverage, fees, settlement and custody terms, webhook handling, and the provider’s refund and dispute rules.
Direct blockchain integration A payment flow built into your site, potentially using payment links or QR codes, a component, or direct network integration. Payment detection, verification, order matching, monitoring, and the engineering and operational burden of maintaining the integration.

Before you compare providers, decide which customer and merchant countries matter, whether you want one-time or recurring payments, which stablecoins and networks to accept, and whether you want proceeds in fiat or stablecoins. Also define how your business will handle underpayments, late payments, duplicate notifications, refunds, and customer-support requests.

Option 1: Use your ecommerce platform’s built-in checkout

Shopify USDC checkout

Shopify documents USDC checkout through Shopify Payments. To use it, a merchant needs Shopify Payments, must meet the feature’s supported-region rules, and must have an account representative address in an eligible region. Identity verification may also be required. Shopify lists Base, Ethereum L1, Optimism, Polygon, and Arbitrum as supported networks for this feature.

Shopify says payouts are made in the merchant’s local payout currency or, in some regions, through a USDC balance that the merchant must claim manually. Its Help Center says customers can use any of the 480 crypto wallets Shopify accepts; that figure is Shopify’s own count as described on a page accessed in 2026, with no publication date displayed. It is not a count of wallets used across the crypto market.

Check Shopify’s current region and eligibility information against your business and account representative’s circumstances before building around this option. The feature also has product-specific limits: Shopify says subscription products cannot be paid for with USDC, merchants cannot partially capture USDC orders, and customers cannot open disputes on those orders. Confirm the complete payout, refund, and support process before enabling it.

Option 2: Use hosted checkout or a payments API

A hosted provider can create a payment session or invoice and provide a customer-facing payment flow. Depending on the service, it may also report payment status, support subscriptions, convert stablecoins to fiat, settle funds to a bank, or issue on-chain refunds. These features and terms vary by provider, so treat the following examples as starting points for comparison, not as a recommendation or a guarantee of availability.

Examples of provider offerings

  • Exodus: Its documentation describes hosted payment sessions and subscriptions, and lists USDC and USDT on Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base, and BSC. It says Checkout API access requires an Exodus Business account.
  • Paxos: Its documentation describes acceptance of PYUSD, USDC, and USDP; holding stablecoins or converting them to fiat; USD settlement to a bank; transaction reconciliation; and on-chain stablecoin refunds.

Ask the provider to confirm commercial eligibility, supported jurisdictions, actual fees, settlement timing, conversion terms, refund behavior, and service conditions. Check who controls any wallet keys or balances, what happens if an account is restricted, and how the provider handles an outage or a transfer sent to the wrong destination. A provider’s feature list does not establish that its service is available to your business in your country.

Option 3: Integrate payments directly on a blockchain

A direct integration can give you control over the checkout and payment experience, but your site or backend must reliably detect payments and reconcile them to orders. Solana’s documentation describes three approaches: drop-in React payment components, Solana Pay payment links or QR codes, and direct RPC integration. Its comparison characterizes a React component as low complexity, Solana Pay as medium complexity, and direct RPC as higher complexity. Those labels describe relative implementation complexity in that documentation, not a guarantee about the effort for every site.

Solana’s documentation advises sharing the wallet address rather than a token account. It also says: “After receiving a payment, verify it landed using Verification Tools.” If you choose this route, assess whether your monitoring is dependable enough for your transaction volume; Solana’s documentation notes that high-volume systems may need production-grade transaction monitoring.

Build payment verification around the order record

A payment notification is not, by itself, proof that an order is safe to fulfill. In particular, a transaction being broadcast or submitted is different from it being confirmed and settled. Use the order record as the source of truth, and reconcile a confirmed payment to a unique order or payment reference before marking the order paid.

  1. Create a unique reference for each order or payment. Store it with the order so an incoming payment event can be matched to the correct purchase.
  2. Make payment creation and fulfillment idempotent. Retrying a request or receiving the same event twice should not create duplicate payment sessions, shipments, or entitlements. The Stablecoin Stack specification describes order references and idempotency identifiers as part of payment reconciliation.
  3. Validate provider notifications. If you use webhooks, verify their signatures according to the provider’s instructions, record event identifiers, and ignore or safely process duplicates. Payclave’s documentation describes signature checks and duplicate-event handling; this is vendor guidance, not independent testing.
  4. Verify the on-chain payment details. Check that the token, network, recipient, amount, and confirmation status match what the order requires. A payment with the right ticker on the wrong network, to the wrong recipient, or for the wrong amount must not be treated as a successful order payment.
  5. Reconcile before fulfillment. Match the confirmed payment to the unique reference and update the order’s state once. Keep a path for investigating delayed, short, duplicate, or otherwise mismatched payments.

The Stablecoin Stack specification explicitly distinguishes successful broadcast submission from final settlement. Payclave’s documentation also describes on-chain verification criteria. Use these descriptions as implementation guidance from their respective authors, and confirm the exact behavior of the provider or network tools you deploy.

Compare options on more than network fees

Use the same questions for every platform or provider you consider. A feature that supports the right token may still be unsuitable if its settlement, geography, or refund terms do not fit your business.

  • Geography: Can your business onboard, and can customers in your target markets use the checkout?
  • Asset and network: Which exact stablecoin-on-network combinations are accepted? A ticker alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
  • Where funds go: Are proceeds settled to a bank, held as stablecoins, or made available in a balance that you must claim? Who controls the keys?
  • Fees and conversion: What are the provider charges, network costs, conversion spreads or fees, and any withdrawal or settlement costs?
  • Payment operations: What confirmation status is reported, how are events delivered, and what reconciliation or monitoring tools are included?
  • Order policies: Are refunds, partial captures, disputes, and recurring payments supported? What happens when a payment is late or short?
  • Compliance and support: What onboarding checks and restrictions apply, and who can help during a payment or service incident?

Do not assume that stablecoin checkout is automatically cheaper than cards or bank transfers because a network transaction fee appears low. An IMF report discusses costs that can arise from validators, exchanges, custodial wallets, and on- and off-ramps, as well as operational, cyber, and legal risks. It cites an earlier comparison by Adams and others (2023) of $5 to $10 to send $500 through stablecoins versus $20 to $30 through traditional rails. That is a dated transfer example cited by the IMF in 2025, not a current quote for website checkout or a prediction of what your business will pay.

Plan for refunds, recurring payments, and compliance

Refunds and disputes

Do not assume that an on-chain payment can be reversed in the same way as a card payment. Establish who can authorize a refund, which asset and network will be used, how the customer’s refund address is verified, and how the transaction will be recorded against the original order. Provider refund tools and platform rules differ; Shopify’s USDC restrictions on disputes and partial capture illustrate why those terms need to be checked before launch.

Subscriptions

Recurring payment support is provider-specific. Shopify says USDC cannot be used to pay for subscription products, while Exodus documents subscription functionality. Confirm how recurring authorization, payment failures, cancellations, and customer consent work for the exact service you intend to use.

Legal and tax obligations

The requirements that apply can depend on your jurisdiction, business model, customers, and the role your business or provider plays. This article does not determine your tax, licensing, AML or sanctions, consumer-protection, privacy, or reporting obligations. Check current guidance from the relevant regulator and tax authority for your business, and get qualified advice where needed before accepting payments.

Quick Recap

A practical launch sequence

  1. Set the acceptance policy. Choose the stablecoins, networks, target markets, settlement currency, and whether payments are one-time or recurring.
  2. Shortlist the route. Check your ecommerce platform first if you already use one; otherwise compare hosted services with a direct integration against your engineering capacity and operating needs.
  3. Confirm eligibility and economics. Get current answers from the platform or provider on onboarding, regions, fees, conversion, settlement, custody, outages, and support.
  4. Write the exception rules. Decide what the site and support team will do with underpayments, delayed confirmations, duplicate events, refunds, and payments that cannot be matched automatically.
  5. Implement and test order reconciliation. Ensure the system validates the network, token, recipient, amount, and confirmation status, and that retries or duplicate notifications cannot trigger duplicate fulfillment.
  6. Review the live terms before launch. Region coverage, supported assets, network lists, fees, and product rules can change. Recheck the provider’s current documentation and your legal and tax requirements when you launch.
