The S&P/BYMA Argentina General Construction Index tracks a selected group of listed Argentine companies in construction-related industries—not construction activity, homebuilding volume or building costs.
What the index measures
S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the benchmark as measuring stocks in the S&P/BYMA Argentina General Index that fall into construction-related industries under the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS). Its eligible GICS sub-industries are Construction Materials (15102010), Forest Products (15105010), Building Products (20102010), Construction & Engineering (20103010), and Homebuilding (25201030). See the provider’s index description and S&P/BYMA Indices Methodology.
The parent index consists of domestic local stocks listed on the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange. To qualify for that parent index, a stock must have traded on at least 20% of trading days during the preceding 12 months, according to the S&P/BYMA Argentina General Index page. The construction index then selects eligible stocks from that parent universe by industry classification.
That makes this an equity-market benchmark. Its level reflects the share prices of its constituents, not the number of buildings under construction, construction-sector output, housing starts or the cost of materials.

How to read the chart
- Identify the return series. The provider offers Price Return and Total Return. Price Return reflects share-price movements. Total Return also accounts for reinvested distributions under the provider’s calculation. Use the same type when comparing performance; the two series answer different questions.
- Check the currency and date. The index page lists ARS as the calculation currency and says calculations are made at end of day. Read the chart’s “as of” date and its displayed start and end dates. The page does not make the series inflation-adjusted or convert it to U.S. dollars.
- Account for weighting. The index uses float-adjusted market-cap weighting. Larger eligible companies can therefore have more influence on the index than smaller ones; it is not an equal-weight average.
- Separate live history from back-tested history. The provider lists October 7, 2019 as the launch date and January 11, 2019 as the first value date. It cautions that data before launch are hypothetical back-tested performance, not actual index performance.
- Match the performance period. A one-day move, a year-to-date return and a one-year return cover different intervals. For a fair comparison, align both the period and return type, and confirm that the figures share the same as-of date.
Why the as-of date matters
Values on the provider page are dated snapshots, not permanent quotes. For example, S&P Dow Jones Indices reported a 36.87% one-year Price Return and an index level of 32,170.31 points for September 14, 2026; its August 31, 2026 snapshot showed a 26.30% one-year Price Return. Those are distinct dated observations, not current values to carry forward. Check the live index page for the latest chart and performance data.
What to compare it with—and what not to
When comparing this chart with another benchmark, align the return type, currency, start and end dates, and observation frequency. Also check the index universes and weighting methods. This benchmark is a construction-related subset of the broader Argentina General Index, not a substitute for the broad market or the S&P Merval. BYMA likewise describes its Construction index as covering construction-related industries within its General Index and using float-adjusted market-cap weighting; its data products page provides its own description.

Concentration can matter as much as the sector label. In the S&P provider page’s characteristics shown with its September 14, 2026 snapshot, the index had six constituents and its largest constituent represented 82.5% of the index. These dated characteristics illustrate that the chart can be dominated by a small number of stocks; they should not be treated as current without checking the provider’s latest figures.

A quick reading checklist
- Is the chart Price Return or Total Return?
- What currency and “as of” date does it show?
- Do the selected dates cover the period you intend to assess?
- Is any pre-October 7, 2019 history clearly understood as hypothetical back-tested data?
- Are you reading it as a concentrated, float-adjusted equity index rather than a measure of physical construction activity?
