What Happens to Your Social Security Number When You Die?

The Social Security Administration does not reassign a number after its holder dies. Death reports and benefit claims follow separate rules.

Your Social Security number is not reassigned after you die. The Social Security Administration (SSA) keeps it associated with your record; death reporting, benefit payments, and survivor claims are handled separately.

Does Social Security reuse a number after its holder dies?

No. The SSA says it does not reassign a Social Security number after the number holder’s death. The number remains associated with that person’s record; it is not transferred to a relative or issued to someone else. SSA’s explanation.

Who reports a death to Social Security?

Funeral homes generally report a death to the SSA, so family members usually do not need to make a separate report. If no funeral home was involved or the death was not reported, a family member should contact the SSA and provide the deceased person’s name, Social Security number, date of birth, and date of death. See SSA guidance on what to do when someone dies.

The SSA also receives death reports from other sources, including relatives, financial institutions, postal authorities, states, and federal agencies. Its death information is not a complete national registry: the agency cautions that its records are not a comprehensive record of all deaths. The full death file includes state records and is restricted to certain government agencies; the public Death Master File excludes those state records. SSA information about its death data.

What happens to benefits and money owed?

Death does not make a deceased person’s SSN available to someone else, but it can affect payments tied to the person’s record. Eligible relatives may qualify for monthly survivor benefits based on the deceased worker’s earnings record. Possible recipients include a spouse, former spouse, child, or dependent parent; eligibility depends on circumstances such as age, relationship, marriage duration, disability, and dependency. Check the SSA’s survivor-benefit rules or contact the agency to assess a specific claim.

One-time lump-sum death payment

A qualifying spouse or child may be eligible for a one-time $255 lump-sum death payment under SSA rules. An application must be made within two years of the person’s death. Eligibility requirements apply, and the amount and rules can change; see the SSA’s current guidance.

Payments or refunds due to the deceased person

A payment or Medicare premium refund may still be owed to the deceased person. SSA Form SSA-1724 sets out who may claim such amounts and the order of priority, which can include certain surviving spouses, children, parents, and the deceased person’s legal representative. The applicable priority depends on the circumstances. See Form SSA-1724 and its instructions.

Can you request a deceased person’s Social Security records?

The SSA accepts requests for a deceased person’s original Social Security card application (Form SS-5) or a computer extract called a Numident record. The request requires acceptable proof of death, and fees may apply. Requirements and fees can change, so review the SSA’s FOIA request instructions before applying.

What if the SSA mistakenly lists you as deceased?

If you are alive but the SSA has mistakenly marked you deceased, visit a local SSA office with an original or agency-certified, unexpired identity document from the agency’s accepted list. After correcting the record, the SSA says it will offer an “Erroneous Death Case – Third Party Contact” notice that you can show to banks, doctors, or other organizations. Follow the SSA’s instructions for correcting an erroneous death report.
