The guidance below describes the launch-day options announced in 2025; it does not establish current stock or delivery availability.
What were the options for buying a Switch 2 on launch day?
Retailers announced limited walk-in inventory for June 5, 2025, while Nintendo cautioned that delivery from its My Nintendo Store by launch day was not guaranteed. Nintendo directed people seeking a launch-day console to participating retailers, according to the Associated Press.

The practical choice was between trying a local store under its own launch procedure or placing an online order and accepting that it might arrive later. The announcements did not give store-by-store quantities, so they cannot show which retailer offered better odds.
How Target handled in-store sales
In its May 29, 2025 announcement, Target said stores would sell the Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart World bundle on June 5, while supplies lasted. Target.com and the Target app were scheduled to begin sales June 6, not launch day. Its launch notice described this process:

- Wait for staff to distribute a physical or digital ticket reserving a product for purchase. Ticketing ended when tickets ran out or ten minutes before opening, whichever came first.
- If you received a ticket, purchase the product in the electronics department.
Target limited purchases to one per item per guest for the console and bundle. A ticket reserved the opportunity to buy; it did not mean unlimited inventory or guarantee that everyone in line would receive one.
How Best Buy handled launch-night sales
Best Buy announced that nearly all of its US stores would open at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on June 5, 2025, for preorder pickup and walk-in purchases. It said stores would have limited numbers of consoles, games, and accessories. The corresponding announced opening times were 11:01 p.m. Central, 10:01 p.m. Mountain, and 9:01 p.m. Pacific on June 4. Best Buy advised customers to check its launch announcement, store locator, and Nintendo notifications for launch-specific details.

Those were retailer-wide plans, not a promise that every location had the same inventory or that arriving at a particular time would secure a console.
Could you order online instead?
Nintendo’s My Nintendo Store delivery by June 5 was not guaranteed, AP reported. That made online ordering an uncertain route for someone who specifically wanted the console on launch day, rather than a dependable substitute for a preorder with confirmed launch-day pickup.

AP also reported that Walmart preorder stock sold out quickly and that several retailer preorder listings became unavailable amid high demand. Those reports describe the 2025 launch period, not current inventory. Nintendo later reported more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units sold through worldwide in the four days after launch. Nintendo defines sell-through as its internal estimate of sales to individual consumers; the figure indicates strong demand but says nothing about the odds at any one store.
