Bitcoin can swing sharply, and neither a plan nor diversification can prevent losses. The most useful way to reduce panic selling is to decide in advance how much risk you can bear, why you hold Bitcoin, and what would make you reconsider—then distinguish a price shock from a genuine change in your investment case.
Why Bitcoin volatility calls for a plan
SEC and CFTC staff describe Bitcoin, including exposure through Bitcoin futures, as highly speculative. Their investor bulletin cautions that Bitcoin prices can be volatile and asks investors to consider their financial circumstances and tolerance for risk. This is U.S. investor-education guidance, not a guarantee about future price movements or a personalized recommendation. Read the SEC/CFTC staff bulletin on Bitcoin futures funds.
A sharp decline can make an immediate sale feel like the only way to regain control. A written plan gives you a reference point when emotions are running high. The SEC advises investors not to let short-term emotions disrupt long-term investment objectives. See the SEC’s crypto-asset investor alert.
Set your Bitcoin exposure before the next selloff
Choose an allocation you can afford to lose
Decide what share of your overall portfolio, if any, belongs in a speculative investment. There is no universally correct Bitcoin allocation: the appropriate amount depends on your circumstances, investment timeframe, and willingness and ability to bear losses. The SEC says to invest in speculative assets only money you can afford to lose entirely, and to pay off high-interest debt before investing. Money needed for near-term obligations should not be put at risk.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Write down why you hold it and what could change your view
Record the reason you chose the exposure and the developments that would cause you to reconsider it. This is a practical way to apply the SEC’s advice to make and follow an investment plan; it is not a regulator-prescribed trading rule. When prices fall, ask whether the facts behind your original decision have changed or whether the move is simply frightening.
Choose a review routine that reduces pressure
You may find it helpful to decide in advance when you will review your holdings, rather than checking prices repeatedly during a sharp move. Treat this as an optional behavioral tactic, not a proven or official recommendation. No particular checking schedule is established by the cited investor materials.

Reduce portfolio risk without assuming Bitcoin is safe
Diversification—spreading investments across asset types—and asset allocation can lower overall portfolio risk. They cannot guarantee gains, remove Bitcoin’s risk of loss, or ensure that losses will be recovered. The mix that makes sense depends on your circumstances, timeframe, and risk tolerance. The 2026 World Investor Week bulletin and the SEC’s crypto-asset alert offer general U.S. investor guidance on planning and risk.
Before increasing exposure, consider how a substantial loss would affect your broader finances, including savings goals and near-term needs. A portfolio can be diversified overall and still contain an allocation to Bitcoin that is too large for your ability to tolerate losses.

Know what kind of Bitcoin exposure you own
“Bitcoin exposure” can refer to different holdings. Their structures affect how exposure is created, how it may track Bitcoin, and what custody or product disclosures matter.
| Exposure | What creates it | Structure and tracking considerations | Custody and disclosures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin held directly | You hold Bitcoin itself. | Your investment value is exposed to Bitcoin’s market price. | You need to consider how private keys are stored, whether you use a wallet or third-party custodian, and how you safeguard access. |
| Spot Bitcoin ETP | The ETP holds Bitcoin and offers shares traded on an exchange. | Share prices can deviate from Bitcoin’s price; tracking is not necessarily exact. | The SEC bulletin describes spot Bitcoin ETPs as exchange-traded commodity trusts, not ETFs registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Read the product’s current prospectus and risk disclosures rather than assuming protections are identical across structures. |
| Bitcoin futures fund | The fund holds Bitcoin futures contracts rather than Bitcoin itself. | Futures contracts expire and positions are typically rolled into later-dated contracts, which can affect the fund’s exposure and performance. | Review the fund’s current prospectus and risk disclosures. Its structure differs from both direct Bitcoin ownership and a spot Bitcoin ETP. |
These distinctions are described in the SEC’s 2024 bulletin on ETPs providing exposure to Bitcoin and Ether and the SEC/CFTC staff bulletin on futures funds. Product terms and regulatory guidance can change, so consult the current documents for the specific holding you own.

Separate custody risk from market-price risk
A wallet is a tool for managing access to private keys; it does not store coins in the same way a physical wallet stores cash. Choosing between self-custody and a third-party custodian is a safeguarding and access decision. It does not control Bitcoin’s market price or prevent investment losses. The SEC’s crypto-asset custody bulletin explains key custody considerations for retail investors.

- Pause and check your plan. Refer to the allocation, reason for holding, and reconsideration conditions you wrote down before the decline.
- Identify what you own. Determine whether your exposure is direct Bitcoin, a spot ETP, or a futures fund; each has a different structure.
- Ask whether the investment case or your circumstances changed. A price drop alone is not the same as a changed thesis, but new facts or a change in your financial needs may warrant a fresh decision.
- Check the portfolio-level impact. Consider your ability to bear a further loss and whether the holding has grown beyond the allocation you intended.
- Review product disclosures before acting. For an ETP or fund, consult its current prospectus and risk disclosures; for direct holdings, consider your custody and access arrangements separately from market risk.
This framework is for general education, not individualized financial advice or a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold Bitcoin. SEC and CFTC investor materials are U.S.-focused; protections and rules may differ elsewhere.
