A port strike can delay cargo moving through the affected terminals, but it does not automatically stop every shipment or cause widespread shortages. Depending on the location and work involved, goods at risk have included refrigerated food, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, general container cargo, and specific industrial inputs. The exact answer depends on which port and terminals are affected, what operations remain open, and how long the disruption lasts.
Which products can be affected by a port strike?
There is no universal list: a strike affects the cargo and work handled by the workers and terminals involved. Past examples from Montreal and U.S. East and Gulf Coast preparations show the kinds of goods that may be exposed, not a prediction that all are delayed in any current strike.
Food and seasonal imports
Refrigerated containers carrying food or other goods with a limited shelf life were among the cargo affected during Montreal port disruptions in October 2024, according to the Montreal Port Authority. During the October 2024 U.S. port strike, the Food Industry Association (FMI) warned that some imported seasonal products, such as tropical fruit, could face local out-of-stock problems if disruption continued while demand increased. FMI said most U.S. grocery items, including paper products, were domestically produced and not directly affected by those strikes; that statement was specific to the United States and the 2024 event, not a present-day inventory forecast. Medicines and medical supplies
Pharmaceuticals, medication, medical supplies and equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), disinfectants, and soaps appeared among the critical goods identified in Montreal strike coverage. New York State’s 2024 preparedness notice also prioritized moving medical and food cargo that had already been unloaded and reminded hospitals and nursing homes of a 60-day stockpile requirement for PPE and other critical goods. That figure describes the state’s requirement in its strike-preparation context, not a general stockpiling recommendation for households. General container cargo and retail goods
The Montreal Port Authority reported general-cargo containers held up during its September 30, 2024 partial strike, including import and export cargo connected with the holiday season. It reported 1,300 general-cargo TEU containers and 300 refrigerated containers affected at 8 a.m. on October 1, 2024, after the first day of that partial strike. These are dated, port-specific operating figures, not current counts or a measure of how much retail inventory any strike affects. The authority’s report also counted 12 TEU containers of critical goods, five vessels on standby, and 11,549 delayed containers. It estimated a 10% drop in total cargo volumes handled at Montreal based on past data for that slowdown; the estimate should not be applied to other ports or events.
Industrial and agricultural inputs
Transport Canada’s account of the 2021 Montreal strike named fertilizer, automotive engines and components, forest shipments, and construction materials among affected goods or sectors. These are examples from a specific historical disruption, not evidence that those goods are exposed in every port strike. In that event, Transport Canada estimated that 356,000 tons of cargo per week—about 53% of the port’s total tonnage—were affected, and estimated permanent losses of $40 million to $100 million per week. What may keep moving?
A strike may involve only some terminals or kinds of work. For example, New York State said a possible 2024 East and Gulf Coast strike was not expected to affect home heating oil, gasoline, diesel, municipal solid waste at the Port of New York and New Jersey, or cruise ships; it also did not expect upstate New York ports to be affected. In Montreal in October 2024, the port authority said a stoppage at two terminals paralyzed 40% of container-handling capacity at the affected Viau and Maisonneuve terminals, while several other container terminals, dry-bulk terminals, liquid-bulk terminals, and the grain terminal remained operational. What could a port strike mean for your budget and shopping?
The direct consumer effect, if any, depends on whether a delayed shipment contains something you need, whether the item has a practical substitute, and whether disruption lasts long enough to affect local availability. A delayed cargo can create a timing problem without creating a broad shortage. The cited examples do not support a universal list of products to stock up on or a forecast of higher prices for shoppers.

- Check the specific situation. Look for current notices from the relevant port, carrier, or retailer. A report about another port—or a notice describing a possible strike—does not confirm that your goods are delayed.
- Use reasonable substitutes if needed. If a particular imported item is temporarily unavailable, consider a suitable alternative rather than assuming the entire category will disappear.
- Avoid panic buying. The historical examples show exposure varies by cargo and location; they do not justify broad household stockpiling.
Is a port strike happening now?
A dated notice should not be mistaken for confirmation that a strike is underway. The latest strike-related operational notice identified here is Hapag-Lloyd’s September 17, 2026 update on German port labor negotiations. It said union members would vote from September 18 through October 1 on rejecting an offer; a 75% rejection threshold was required for the negotiation round to be declared unsuccessful, and indefinite strike action could follow if that threshold were reached. The carrier said, “At this stage, no further strike action has been announced.” That was a conditional update when published, not proof of an ongoing strike. For a decision today, verify the latest local port and carrier status rather than relying on historical examples or an older notice.
