Kraken and Robinhood Crypto are two centralized alternatives to compare if you want to buy cryptocurrency; a hardware wallet is a separate option for managing crypto you already own. The right choice depends on your location, the assets and networks you need, the full purchase price, transfer features, and whether you want a provider to hold your crypto or prefer to manage your own private keys.
Compare the alternatives by what you need
| Option | What it offers, according to its provider | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Kraken | Kraken describes its features in its Coinbase comparison. Its Instant Buy help page says a purchase may include a displayed fee and a spread in the quoted price. | Compare the final quote and order method, funding method, supported assets, withdrawal options, and availability where you live. Kraken’s comparison is provider-authored, not an independent ranking. |
| Robinhood Crypto | Robinhood advertises crypto purchases, recurring buys, external transfers, and staking for certain assets on its crypto service page. | Check whether the asset and required network are supported for your account, whether transfers and staking are available in your jurisdiction, what the purchase quote includes, and how custody works. Robinhood says crypto held through Robinhood Crypto is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected. |
| Self-custody wallet | A self-custody wallet gives you control of your private keys rather than having an exchange hold crypto for you. Hardware wallets are one physical form of self-custody; Ledger and Trezor publish product and supported-asset information. | Confirm asset, network, device-model, and wallet-software compatibility before transferring crypto. Consider how you will secure and recover your wallet. You may still need an exchange or other service to buy crypto. |
This is a shortlist of documented options, not a universal ranking. Availability, supported assets, and features can vary by location and change over time. Check the provider’s current terms and availability for your residence before opening an account or moving funds.
How to compare buying costs
Do not treat a headline fee as the entire cost of a crypto purchase. Kraken’s Instant Buy fee explanation says charges can include a displayed fee and, where applicable, a spread incorporated into the price. It says the spread can vary with transaction size, asset, payment method, and market conditions.
Compare the final price shown for the amount you intend to buy, and pay attention to the order method and funding method. A quoted price for one asset or payment option does not establish the cost of a different transaction. Robinhood’s service page advertises crypto features, but the information cited here does not establish a comparable fee schedule for every purchase; check the live quote and applicable terms before placing an order.

Check assets, networks, transfers, and local access
A platform may support an asset for buying without supporting every network or transfer route you need. Before committing funds, verify that the exact asset and network are supported for your account and that deposits or withdrawals are available in your jurisdiction. Kraken says verified-residence restrictions can affect assets and services; Robinhood says features such as staking are not available in all jurisdictions.
Robinhood advertises transfers to external wallets, but that does not mean every coin, network, or location is supported. Confirm transfer availability and the destination wallet’s compatibility before sending funds. Cryptocurrency held through Robinhood Crypto is not FDIC or SIPC protected, according to its service disclosures; do not assume bank or brokerage protections apply to crypto.

Choose between provider custody and self-custody
Keeping crypto with a platform
Coinbase Help describes an exchange as holding crypto on a customer’s behalf. With a custodial service, the provider manages the private keys associated with the assets held there. This can be convenient for account-based buying and management, but you should understand the provider’s transfer options, local restrictions, and terms.
Taking control of your keys
Coinbase Help explains that a self-custody wallet gives the user direct control of private keys and provides a recovery phrase during setup. That control also puts key security and recovery on you: if you lose the phrase, access may not be recoverable. Keep the phrase private and protected, and never share it with someone claiming they need it to help with a transaction.

When a hardware wallet makes sense
A hardware wallet is an optional way to manage crypto with private keys kept offline; it is not itself a substitute for an exchange when you need to purchase assets. Ledger describes its devices and Ledger Wallet interface on its official site, and its official shop lists the Nano S Plus as an example. Trezor provides a supported-assets reference that lets users check support by device model and wallet software.
Before transferring crypto to any hardware wallet, confirm that the particular asset, network, device model, and compatible wallet software all match. Product availability and provider connections can depend on country and third-party services. If shopping for one, “crypto hardware wallet” is a useful search phrase; verify the current listing and exact model rather than assuming a particular seller or offer is available.

A practical selection checklist
- Confirm local eligibility. Check that the service and the features you need are available for your residence.
- Identify the exact asset and network. Verify buying, custody, deposit, and withdrawal support for both before funding an account.
- Compare the transaction quote. Review the total price, any displayed fee, and any spread or other charges for your chosen payment and order method.
- Decide who should control the keys. Choose a custodial account if you want a provider to hold the crypto, or self-custody only if you are prepared to secure and recover the keys yourself.
- Test transfer details before sending. Confirm the destination address and network, and check the wallet’s model-specific support. Crypto transfers can be difficult or impossible to reverse if sent incorrectly.
