On November 27, The Wall Street Journal reported that a Comcast spokeswoman said the company was looking forward to the planned spin-off and that “none of these assets are for sale.” That statement referred to the assets slated for the spin-off, not an offer to sell MSNBC to Musk or another buyer. - Sale: A business or asset is transferred to a buyer in exchange for payment or other consideration.
Comcast announced the first kind of transaction. The distinction matters: a corporate restructuring is not evidence that the separated network was being marketed to Musk.

What was Comcast planning to spin off?
The planned company brought together several cable networks and related digital properties, rather than isolating MSNBC. Comcast’s November 20, 2024 announcement said the portfolio had generated approximately $7 billion in revenue over the twelve months ended September 30, 2024. The spin-off was completed on January 2, 2026, when Versant separated from Comcast. An SEC filing identifies MS NOW as the network formerly known as MSNBC and includes it in the Versant business. The network’s current name is MS NOW, following its November 2025 rebrand. The Musk-Rogan exchange was speculation in 2024; it did not become the transaction that changed the network’s corporate home.
