Official documents describe several separate 2026 measures with different start dates, so the phrase “coming soon” alone does not identify which date applies.
What dates do the official actions specify?
The following dates belong to distinct actions and product scopes. They are not a single schedule for all tariffs.
| Action and covered goods | Effective date | Important scope detail |
|---|---|---|
| Specified additional duties on certain imports from Canada | 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time, August 22, 2026 | A U.S. Government Publishing Office proclamation changed the previously stated date of August 19 to August 22. Read the proclamation. |
| Specified tariffs on unmanned aircraft systems and components | 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time, September 3, 2026 | The proclamation applies to covered goods entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouse on or after that time, subject to stated exceptions. Read the proclamation. |
| Additions or removals from the scope of certain Section 338 tariffs described in the Canada fact sheet | September 15, 2026 | This is one component of the fact sheet’s described measures. Read the White House fact sheet. |
| Import bans for certain Canadian products described in the same fact sheet | September 29, 2026 | This is a separate component from the September 15 scope changes. Read the White House fact sheet. |
Why one announcement can have more than one start date
A tariff action can contain separate provisions, each with its own date and affected goods. The White House fact sheet on measures responding to Canada’s retaliation, for example, distinguishes September 15 scope changes from September 29 import bans. Treating either date as the start date for the entire action would blur that distinction.
The customs event can matter as well. The unmanned-aircraft proclamation specifies goods entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouse on or after its effective time. To determine whether a shipment is covered, an importer must check the operative text and the shipment’s relevant customs status—not just the date a measure was announced.

How to check which date applies
- Identify the action. Find the announcement or legal document and confirm the country, product, and tariff measure it names. “New tariffs” or “coming soon” is not enough to establish coverage.
- Read the operative instrument and amendments. A fact sheet can summarize a measure, but a signed proclamation or other legal instrument may set the operative terms. Check for later changes: the specified additional duties on certain Canadian imports moved from August 19 to August 22, 2026, in a later proclamation.
- Match the product and customs event. Confirm that the goods fall within the document’s scope, note any exceptions, and check whether the date is tied to entry for consumption, withdrawal from warehouse, or another event.
- Check current official materials. The U.S. Trade Representative’s Presidential Tariff Actions index is a navigation point for individual actions. Review the relevant current instrument and tariff schedule rather than relying on a headline or an older summary.
Do tariffs have an end date?
Some actions specify a duration, but it is action-specific. A June 2026 White House fact sheet says the steel, aluminum, and copper tariff changes it describes are temporary through December 31, 2027. That endpoint applies to those described changes; it does not establish when other tariffs end. Read the fact sheet.
