To track German industrial production, start with the relevant monthly Destatis production index; to track construction output, use the construction production index. Access national data through the Destatis Economic Dashboard or GENESIS-Online, then use Bundesbank downloads for series-level CSV or SDMX access and Eurostat when comparing Germany with other EU countries. The right choice depends on sector scope, adjustment, purpose and data vintage.
How do I track German industrial production?
Use the industry-specific monthly production series from Destatis when the question is how output in German industry is changing. The broader production-sector measure is not synonymous with manufacturing: it includes mining and quarrying, manufacturing, energy and construction. Check the series scope before describing a movement as “industrial production.”
Destatis is the national starting point. Its Economic Dashboard and GENESIS-Online are the routes to consult for official data and downloadable records. The Destatis Short-term indicators access index lists production-industry indicators as well as construction measures, but Destatis says that index will stop being updated from October 2026 and be deactivated at the beginning of 2027. The data remain available elsewhere; use the Dashboard or GENESIS-Online rather than relying on the index as a permanent entry point. Destatis also has a Short-term indicators topic page.
The production index measures price-adjusted output. For additional industrial context, Destatis and the Bundesbank also provide indicators such as productivity and labour-cost indices. These add perspective but answer different questions from the production index.

Where can I find Germany’s construction output data?
For realized construction activity, select the construction production index, not the broad production-sector total. Depending on the question, examine the overall construction series or its components: building construction, civil engineering and specialised construction activities.
The Bundesbank’s production-sector series listing, dated 7 September 2026, identifies series for production including construction, construction alone, buildings and civil engineering, and specialised construction activities. It offers CSV and SDMX-ML 2.1 downloads for listed series. Use the Bundesbank Output page for indicator context; its latest observations are usually provisional and may include estimates.

Destatis’ table for the production index in building construction illustrates the detailed presentation: a snapshot dated 8 June 2026 used a 2021=100 index base and displayed X13 JDemetra+ and BV 4.1 adjusted series. That is a dated example, not a statement about the latest observation or the current presentation.
Should I use seasonally adjusted or unadjusted figures?
Choose the version that matches the comparison, and label it when reporting a result.
- Monthly movement: Use a seasonally and calendar-adjusted series where available. Seasonal patterns and calendar effects can obscure underlying short-run movement in raw monthly values.
- Original reported levels or year-on-year comparison: Unadjusted figures may be appropriate when the original observations are the focus. Do not compare an unadjusted value with an adjusted one as though they were the same series.
- Calendar-adjusted series: Some indicators offer calendar adjustment without seasonal adjustment, or several adjusted variants. Check the series label rather than assuming every adjustment means the same thing.
Eurostat’s construction index overview describes the measure as monthly, price-adjusted construction output and explains that construction volume value added is not directly observable; it has to be approximated, for example using deflated gross production or inputs of labour and raw materials. The index is therefore an estimate of activity, not a count of projects.
How can I compare Germany with other countries?
Use Eurostat’s short-term business statistics for comparisons on the common EU statistical framework. Its construction production (volume) index overview, published 18 September 2026, states a 2021=100 base for the construction index. That figure identifies the index reference base; it is not an output level or a growth rate.
Rank #4
Before comparing countries, align the measure’s sector coverage, adjustment and base year. For construction, confirm that you are comparing the same construction series and the same adjusted form. Do not treat a national series and a Eurostat series as interchangeable without checking those definitions.
How should I interpret construction indicators alongside output?
Production describes realized output; related indicators can help explain or anticipate it, but they are not substitutes for it.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Orders received and orders on hand: Provide information about demand and the pipeline, not completed output.
- Building permits: Can signal potential future building activity, not construction already carried out.
- Employment and actual hours worked: Help show the labour input behind activity.
- Remuneration and turnover: Add information about costs and business activity in building construction and civil engineering.
Destatis’ short-term indicator listings include construction production, orders received, orders on hand, permits, employment and turnover. The Bundesbank’s Economic activity and prices page provides related economic indicators. Keep each series distinct: a rise in permits or orders is not evidence that current construction output has risen by the same amount.

- Confirm scope. Decide whether the claim is about industry excluding construction, the broader production sector, or construction itself; then select the matching series.
- Choose the relevant segment. For construction, decide whether total construction, building construction, civil engineering or specialised activities answer the question.
- Match the adjustment to the comparison. Use an appropriately adjusted series for monthly momentum, or an unadjusted series when original levels are the focus. State which version you used.
- Check the observation’s status. Recent figures may be provisional or estimated, and historical values may be revised. Retain the reference month, release date and data vintage if the specific reading matters.
- Keep related indicators separate. Use orders and permits as leading context, and output as the measure of realized activity.
- Choose an access route suited to the task. Use Destatis for national official data, Bundesbank CSV or SDMX downloads for listed series, and Eurostat for cross-country comparison.
Release dates can change. Check the current Destatis or Bundesbank release calendar for the indicator rather than assuming a recurring date from a general calendar listing.
