For U.S. retail customers, neither Robinhood Crypto nor Coinbase has one universal trading cost or a single feature set available to everyone. Robinhood’s published 0.00%–0.95% tiers apply to eligible exchange-routed orders as maker/taker pricing rolls out; standard orders may use market-maker routing, whose economics are reflected in the spread. Coinbase separates spread-inclusive Simple Trade from Coinbase Advanced’s order book and maker/taker fees. Both platforms describe custodial storage—not customer-controlled private keys. The better fit depends on your order type, route, account pricing, intended features, and whether you plan to withdraw crypto.
How Robinhood Crypto and Coinbase charge for trades
A posted fee is only one part of a crypto trade’s cost. The quoted or executed price, spread, order type, routing, conversion, and any applicable subscription or withdrawal costs can also matter. The most useful comparison is the full order preview for the same asset, order size, and time—not a “zero fee” headline against a percentage from another product.
Robinhood Crypto: routing and order type both matter
Robinhood lists maker/taker fee tiers of 0.00%–0.95% for eligible exchange-routed crypto orders, based on trailing 30-day volume. The company says this pricing is being rolled out gradually, so the fees and available options can vary by customer, asset, order, routing, and interface. Market and stop orders are takers. Limit and stop-limit orders may be makers if they rest on the book, or takers if matched immediately. Only eligible exchange-routed orders count toward the described volume tiers; standard orders routed to a market maker and certain other orders do not. Robinhood’s fee details explain the eligibility and order treatment.
Routing also affects the economics. Robinhood says market-maker routing is the default for standard app and web classic orders. As of June 15, 2026, Robinhood Crypto said it received $0.95 from its market maker for every $100 notional executed through that routing, and that this rebate is included in the spread. The company does not disclose the names of partner market makers. Exchange routing is available for supported crypto and eligible interfaces; Robinhood says it receives no rebate from partner exchanges for those orders. Neither route guarantees a better execution price. Robinhood’s routing disclosure describes the distinction.

Accordingly, Robinhood should not be treated as universally free. For an eligible exchange-routed order, compare the fee tier with the estimated execution price. For a market-maker-routed order, look at the quoted price and spread as well as any displayed fee.
Coinbase: Simple Trade is not the same as Advanced
Coinbase Simple Trade may include a spread in the quoted price, including for crypto-to-crypto conversions. Coinbase Advanced uses an order book and says it does not include a spread in its pricing. Advanced fees depend on the account’s fee tier and whether an order is maker or taker: an immediately matched order is taker, while an order that rests on the book can receive maker treatment. If an order fills partly at once and the remainder rests, the filled portion is charged as taker and the resting portion as maker. Coinbase directs customers to their signed-in fee page and order preview for current account-specific rates; fees can change. See Coinbase’s Advanced fee information and its general fees disclosure.

Coinbase One advertises zero trading fees for eligible buys and sells, but limitations apply. A spread may still apply to certain Coinbase trades, and DEX service fees or other excluded transaction types may remain. Check the specific transaction’s preview and subscription terms rather than assuming that a zero-trading-fee benefit removes every cost. Coinbase’s Coinbase One benefits page describes the program.
Coinbase’s dated regional examples
In an announcement dated September 16, 2026, Coinbase gave entry-level spot maker/taker examples of 0.50%/0.90% in the United States, 0.25%/0.50% in the EU and UK, and 0.09%/0.10% in Brazil, India, and other international markets. These are examples from that announcement, not a guaranteed rate for every customer or market. Actual fees depend on market, tier, account criteria, and current pricing. Coinbase said lower tiers begin at $10,000 in qualifying volume, with other criteria including USDC balance. Confirm your live rates in the account before trading. Coinbase’s September 16, 2026 fee announcement gives the dated examples.

A fair way to compare the total cost
- Choose the same asset and trade size. Confirm that the asset and trading pair are available in your location and account.
- Match the order type. Compare market with market, or limit with limit, and note whether an order fills immediately or rests.
- Check the route and product. On Robinhood, identify whether the order uses exchange or market-maker routing. On Coinbase, distinguish Simple Trade from Advanced.
- Read the preview at the same time. Record the fee, estimated execution price, and any spread or conversion cost shown. Do not compare a rate from one platform with an execution price from another.
- Include the next step. If you plan to withdraw, check supported networks and the network fee; if a subscription benefit is relevant, account for its conditions.
Because Robinhood’s routing and rollout can vary and Coinbase’s fees depend on account tiers and markets, public fee pages alone do not establish a universal cost winner.
Which features and trading controls differ?
For occasional purchases, the relevant difference may be the simplicity of the buying flow. For active trading, order-book access, order handling, charts, and API availability may matter more. Asset access, interfaces, and features vary with jurisdiction and account eligibility, so verify the exact product you can use.

Robinhood’s custody disclosures
Robinhood says crypto is held in a Robinhood Crypto account separate from its brokerage account, and that crypto is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected. Its security materials say the majority of customer crypto is held in cold storage, with hot storage also used for operations. These are Robinhood’s descriptions of its practices, not a guarantee against loss. See Robinhood’s custody disclosure.
Coinbase’s custody disclosures
Coinbase’s user agreement says private keys used to process transactions are stored in a combination of online and offline storage. Coinbase Advanced states that customer assets are held 1:1 and that it does not lend or act with assets without permission. These are Coinbase’s statements, not an independent guarantee or an FDIC or SIPC protection claim. See Coinbase’s U.S. user agreement and Coinbase Advanced.
Withdrawing to a self-custody wallet
Robinhood says customers can send supported crypto to an external wallet if they want to control their own private keys. It says it charges no additional fee to send or receive crypto, but network fees apply. Transfer eligibility and supported assets or networks vary. An on-chain transfer also carries operational risks, including selecting the correct supported network and destination. Check the asset’s transfer options and fee before sending. Robinhood’s crypto transfer information covers supported transfers and fees.
Quick Recap
Which platform fits your priorities?
- You want occasional purchases: Compare the exact quoted price and previewed cost for the buying flow you expect to use. Coinbase Simple Trade may include a spread; Robinhood’s standard routing may also reflect routing economics in the spread.
- You want order-book controls: Compare Robinhood’s eligible exchange-routed order options with Coinbase Advanced. Check the maker/taker rate shown for your account and whether your order is likely to rest or match immediately.
- You want to move crypto on-chain: Confirm the asset and network can be withdrawn to your intended destination, and account for the network fee and transfer-specific restrictions.
- You want control of your own keys: A custodial platform account does not provide that control. You would need to withdraw supported assets to a self-custody wallet and manage the keys yourself.
- You are outside the United States: Do not assume U.S. pricing, available assets, transfers, or products apply. Coinbase’s dated regional examples illustrate that fees can differ by geography; check current availability and pricing for your location.
