Choose a Bitcoin wallet by matching its security and recovery demands to how you use it: a mobile wallet can suit small, frequent payments, while savings may call for offline key storage or a hardware wallet. Self-custody gives you control of the keys, but also makes you responsible for protecting them and preserving a working recovery plan.
What self-custody means—and what a wallet holds
A Bitcoin wallet manages the private keys that authorize transactions; it does not contain coins like a physical wallet contains cash. Bitcoin.org explains that a recovery phrase—a sequence of words, also called a seed phrase or mnemonic—can restore a wallet. Anyone who obtains that phrase may be able to access the associated bitcoin. If the phrase and other recovery options are permanently lost, the funds may be inaccessible permanently. Bitcoin.org states that no developer, miner, wallet provider, or exchange can recover funds permanently lost from a self-custodied wallet (Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance).
Start with how you will use the wallet
Mobile wallet for everyday payments
A connected phone wallet is convenient for everyday spending and face-to-face transactions. Its tradeoffs are exposure to phone loss or compromise, dependence on app availability, and the need to understand how its backup works. Keep only an appropriate operational amount on an internet-connected device; Bitcoin.org advises using connected devices for small daily amounts and keeping the rest in a safer environment (Bitcoin.org’s wallet selection guide).
Desktop wallet for computer-based control
Desktop software may offer more configuration, but security depends partly on the computer: malware can put keys or transactions at risk. Also check how the wallet validates transactions. Some desktop wallets rely on remote servers, while a wallet connected to your own full node can independently verify blocks and transactions. A full node requires more setup and resources, so weigh independence against the maintenance you are prepared to handle.

Hardware wallet for savings
A hardware wallet is designed to handle keys offline while signing transactions, making it a possible fit for savings or a larger balance. It still requires compatible software, careful setup, and a secure recovery backup. It can reduce some risks from a compromised computer, but cannot prevent mistakes such as exposing a recovery phrase or losing it. Compare current device support and official manufacturer documentation before choosing a model.
Multisignature for distributing control
A multisignature arrangement requires approvals from multiple keys rather than relying on one key alone. It can reduce dependence on a single device or location, but adds coordination and recovery complexity. Choose it only if you can document how approvals work and how the wallet can be recovered if a key or signer becomes unavailable.

Compare the tradeoffs that matter
Wallet categories are a starting point, not a complete security rating. Compare the actual wallet and its companion software across these factors:
- Key control: Confirm that you control the private keys and understand who, if anyone, can authorize a transaction on your behalf.
- Validation and reliance: Find out whether the wallet independently verifies transactions, uses simplified validation, or relies on a remote server. These models involve different levels of independence and trust.
- Device environment: Consider the security of the phone or computer used to access the wallet, as well as what offline signing does—and does not—protect against.
- Transparency: Check whether the software is open source and whether reproducible builds or other transparency measures are described. These are useful evaluation criteria, not a guarantee that software is free of flaws.
- Privacy: Check what information the wallet shares with servers and what privacy features it offers. Bitcoin transactions are public and permanent; self-custody does not make them anonymous.
- Fees and compatibility: Review fee controls, supported devices, and whether the wallet works with the addresses and other software you expect to use.
- Backup and recovery: Make sure you understand what must be backed up, how restoration works, and whether backups need updating.
Bitcoin.org’s wallet directory uses control, validation, transparency, device environment, privacy, and fees as comparison criteria. Its ratings are the directory’s assessments, not independent testing (Bitcoin.org wallet directory).

Understand backup and recovery before depositing funds
- Read the wallet’s recovery instructions. Establish whether it uses a recovery phrase, requires a wallet-file backup, or has another process. Do not assume the same backup method applies to every wallet.
- Back up what the wallet requires. Bitcoin.org advises backing up the entire wallet, not only keys currently visible in the interface. Some wallets may need regular backups; modern deterministic wallets may restore addresses from one recovery phrase. Follow the specific wallet’s documentation.
- Protect the recovery information offline. Keep it private and physically secure. Bitcoin.org recommends considering durable media and more than one secure physical location. Do not treat a photograph or cloud upload as a universally safe backup: anyone who gets the phrase may gain access.
- Know the password and passphrase consequences. Understand what a wallet password or optional passphrase does before enabling it. Bitcoin.org warns that forgotten wallet passwords can have very limited recovery options.
- Keep software current. Updates can include security fixes; use the wallet’s official update process and verify you are using the intended software.
- Plan for future access. Consider how a trusted person could locate and use a recovery plan if you die or become incapacitated, without exposing the phrase while you are alive.
Examples are starting points, not universal recommendations
Bitcoin.org’s hardware directory lists products including BitBox02, Jade models, Coldcard, Passport, Trezor Safe 3, and Trezor Safe 5. Listings and availability can change; confirm current support and consult the manufacturer’s official documentation before purchasing (Bitcoin.org hardware wallet directory).
For one specific example, Bitcoin.org’s BitBox02 profile describes USB-C and USB-A support and offline backups to microSD card and BIP39 mnemonic. The profile rates its control, transparency, and environment as “Good”; it says validation, privacy, and fee control depend on the software wallet used with it. These are descriptions and ratings from the directory, not hands-on testing or a recommendation for every user (Bitcoin.org’s BitBox02 profile).

Bitcoin.org describes Electrum as focused on speed and simplicity, using remote servers and allowing recovery from a secret phrase. The directory characterizes its validation as simplified and less secure than a full node, and notes its source-code and deterministic-build transparency. Those are the directory’s descriptions, not current independent audit findings (Bitcoin.org’s desktop wallet directory).
