Robinhood Crypto holds purchased Bitcoin in wallets controlled by Robinhood, not in a wallet whose private keys you control. Robinhood says it keeps most cryptocurrency in offline cold storage and some in online hot wallets for routine operations, but it does not disclose a Bitcoin-specific storage percentage. Robinhood also says it believes customers are the legal owners of crypto they purchase; that ownership statement is separate from who holds the keys.
How Robinhood stores Bitcoin
Robinhood describes its crypto custody as a mix of hot and cold storage. Hot wallets are online and support routine activity; cold wallets are kept offline. Robinhood says the majority of coins are in cold storage, while some remain in hot wallets. Its 2025 filing describes custody using hot and offline cold wallets and an architecture that combines multi-party computation with hardware security. Neither the filing nor the customer-facing materials cited here gives a Bitcoin-specific percentage or a customer-by-customer on-chain address. Robinhood’s security explanation and its 2025 10-K/A describe company practices; they are not a public, Bitcoin-specific proof of reserves.
Do you own Bitcoin held on Robinhood?
Robinhood says it believes a customer is the legal owner of crypto purchased on its platform. At the same time, the customer does not receive the private keys to Robinhood’s corporate crypto addresses. Legal ownership, control of the keys, and access to an account are distinct questions; Robinhood’s statement is its own description, not a legal conclusion for every jurisdiction or circumstance. Its crypto transfer support page explains the custodial arrangement, while its US crypto page states its ownership position.
What custody means in practice
| Question | Robinhood Crypto | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the private keys? | Robinhood says it controls the keys to its corporate addresses; customers do not receive them. | The wallet user controls the keys and must protect the recovery credentials. |
| Who initiates transactions? | You request transactions through the custodial account service. | You authorize transactions using the wallet’s keys. |
| Who handles access recovery? | You use Robinhood Crypto account support and account-access processes. | You are responsible for keeping the recovery phrase or other credentials; Robinhood says it cannot recover lost Wallet keys or recovery phrases. |
| Are crypto holdings FDIC insured or SIPC protected? | No, according to Robinhood’s US crypto disclosure. | No, according to the same disclosure for self-custody wallet assets. |
Robinhood Crypto and Robinhood Wallet are separate services. The Wallet FAQ says the Wallet app is separate from a Robinhood Crypto account and that Robinhood Crypto is not responsible for Wallet activity. See Robinhood Wallet information and the Wallet FAQ. These descriptions explain the broad custody models; they do not settle legal title in every individual case.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
What Robinhood’s insurance and account protections do—and do not—say
Robinhood says its crime insurance protects a portion of assets in its storage systems against theft, including cybersecurity breaches, with underwriting by Lloyd’s syndicates. “A portion” is not a promise that every asset, account balance, or type of loss is covered. Separately, Robinhood says crypto held through Robinhood Crypto—and crypto in self-custody wallets—is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected. Those distinctions appear in its security materials and US crypto disclosures.
How to move Bitcoin into a wallet you control
Robinhood says eligible customers can transfer crypto to external wallets. Its support page puts the choice plainly: “If you want to secure your own crypto and have your own private keys, you can send your crypto to an external self-custody wallet, like Robinhood Wallet.” Follow the current transfer instructions in your account, since eligibility and available steps can vary. A successful transfer changes custody: the receiving wallet’s keys control the Bitcoin, and losing the recovery credentials can mean losing access.

- Set up and secure the receiving wallet first. Choose a self-custody wallet, follow its setup instructions, and record and protect its recovery credentials. Robinhood Wallet is a software option; a Bitcoin hardware wallet is another approach. Ledger describes hardware signing and offline key storage on its Bitcoin wallet page; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent test or guarantee of safety.
- Get the receiving Bitcoin address. In the receiving wallet, select Bitcoin and use its receive function to display an address. Confirm that the asset and network match the transfer route shown by Robinhood.
- Start the transfer in Robinhood Crypto. Use the crypto transfer controls in your Robinhood account, select Bitcoin, and enter or scan the receiving address. Review all details and any confirmation steps shown in the app before submitting.
- Verify receipt in the destination wallet. Check the transfer status and the receiving wallet after the transaction is processed. Keep the recovery credentials secure; a hardware device does not by itself back up or restore your wallet.
Moving Bitcoin to self-custody is not the same as buying a device: the transfer itself is what sends crypto to the new address. Once there, you—not Robinhood—are responsible for securing keys and maintaining recovery access.

- Robinhood Crypto may suit someone who prioritizes account-based access and custodial support and accepts that Robinhood holds the keys to its crypto addresses.
- Self-custody may suit someone who wants direct key control and is prepared to secure recovery credentials and authorize transactions personally.
This article describes Robinhood’s US service. Robinhood operates through different entities and arrangements in other jurisdictions, so customers elsewhere should check the terms that apply to their account. Its account materials also distinguish Robinhood Crypto from Robinhood Financial; crypto custody should not be confused with securities account arrangements.
