Use SEC Yield to compare a fund’s recent portfolio income on a standardized, annualized, after-expense basis. Use distribution yield to see what the fund paid out over the period specified by its own formula. They answer different questions: neither is a promised future payout, and neither measures a fund’s total return.
What SEC Yield tells you
The 30-Day SEC Yield is an annualized estimate based on income a fund’s portfolio earned over a recent 30-day period, after fund expenses. The SEC describes it as an estimate of current income generated by portfolio securities over that historical period, expressed as a percentage of the fund’s offering price. It is useful for comparing recent income generation when funds report it on a comparable basis, but it does not mean the fund will earn or pay that rate for the next 12 months. SEC staff guidance, published December 2022, explains the calculation and its limits.
Schwab likewise describes SEC Yield as a hypothetical annualized measure: it shows what a 12-month yield would look like if the fund continued earning at its recent rate. That hypothetical assumption is not a forecast or guarantee. Schwab’s yield guide provides additional context.
What distribution yield tells you
Distribution yield generally relates distributions already paid, but the label does not have one universal formula. Check the fund’s definition, lookback period, denominator, and as-of date before comparing it with another fund’s figure.

For example, State Street defines its Fund Distribution Yield as the sum of distributions in the preceding 365 days divided by NAV per share. That is a backward-looking measure of payments under that specific formula; it is not a measure of current portfolio earnings. Other providers may use an annualized rate based on a recent payment or a different calculation, so matching labels do not necessarily mean matching measures. State Street’s SDY page defines its measures and dates its displayed data.
Which yield should you use?
| Your question | Use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| How much recent portfolio income is the fund generating relative to comparable funds? | 30-Day SEC Yield | Compare the same reporting date and confirm whether the figure reflects fee waivers or is unsubsidized. |
| What cash distributions did the fund make over a past period? | The fund’s trailing distribution yield, if its formula is based on past payments | Read the stated period and denominator; the figure records prior distributions, not current earning capacity. |
| How do two funds compare? | The same metric for both funds | Align the calculation, lookback, as-of date, expenses, and treatment of waivers. Do not compare one fund’s distribution yield with another’s SEC Yield as if they measured the same thing. |
| Is the fund’s income attractive or sustainable for me? | Neither yield on its own | Consider total return, risks, distribution sources and tax character, costs, and changes in NAV or market price. |
Some fund pages show both subsidized and unsubsidized SEC Yield. A waiver or reimbursement can affect the reported after-expense figure, so check which version you are viewing rather than assuming all published SEC Yields use the same expense basis.

How to compare yields responsibly
- Read the fund’s definition. Identify whether the number represents portfolio income earned or distributions already paid, and note its denominator.
- Match the time basis. A 30-day figure annualized for comparison is not the same as distributions accumulated over a trailing year. Record the as-of date for each number.
- Check expenses and waivers. Verify whether expenses are deducted and whether a fee waiver or subsidy affects the figure.
- Inspect distribution sources and tax character. A payout can have different tax treatment depending on its source; a yield percentage does not tell you your after-tax income.
- Review return and risk alongside yield. Look at NAV and market-price movement, reinvested distributions, costs, and portfolio risks. A high payout alone does not establish strong performance or sustainable income.
Important limitations
SEC Yield annualizes a short window
Because SEC Yield annualizes income from a recent 30-day period, it can change as the measurement window changes. For TIPS funds specifically, SEC staff warns that the figure may move substantially month to month, especially when inflation changes rapidly. Funds have also used different treatments of inflation adjustments to principal in the calculation; the SEC says the methodology does not explicitly address that treatment, and the approaches can lead to different presentations. This is a TIPS-specific calculation issue, not a general claim about every bond fund. The SEC’s 2022 guidance discusses the caveat.
Distribution yield records a defined payout history
When calculated from past payments, distribution yield describes what was distributed during its stated period. Payments can change, and the yield alone does not establish why a distribution was made or whether it will continue. Consult the fund’s current materials for its formula and the composition of its payouts.

Pre-tax yield is not after-tax income
Municipal interest, REIT income, and qualified versus nonqualified dividends may receive different tax treatment. A pre-tax yield comparison therefore cannot establish which fund will provide more after-tax income for a particular investor. Review current tax documents or consult a qualified tax professional for an individualized assessment. Schwab’s guide discusses these tax distinctions.
Yield is not total return
Total return includes changes in share price as well as distributions reinvested over the period. A fund can have a high yield while its share price or NAV falls; conversely, a lower-yielding fund may have other sources of return. Historical fund materials also emphasize that principal value and returns vary and that returns include share-price changes and reinvested dividends and capital gains. Sit Investment Associates’ Summer 2019 newsletter offers that historical context.
