Cracker Barrel suspended its restaurant remodel program on September 9, 2025, after customers objected to both its proposed interiors and its simplified new logo. The company said the modern design did not reflect what customers valued about its restaurants. The decision applied to locations that had not yet been remodeled—not to routine maintenance or the broader transformation plan.
Why did Cracker Barrel stop remodeling its restaurants?
The company said it heard customers’ concerns about the logo and the planned restaurant changes, and that the modern remodel design did not reflect what customers loved about Cracker Barrel. In its announcement, the company said: “You’ve shared your voices in recent weeks not just on our logo, but also on our restaurants. We’re continuing to listen. Today, we’re suspending our remodels.” ABC News reported the announcement; the company’s statement was also reproduced by the Associated Press.
The timing linked the interior decision to the logo controversy in customers’ perception. In August 2025, after announcing a simplified, text-based logo that removed the “Old Timer” character, Cracker Barrel said it would retain its longtime logo. About two weeks later, it announced the remodel suspension. AP reported that the interior changes did not sit well with many customers, particularly after the logo announcement. That reporting does not establish that all customers opposed the designs, and no representative survey figure quantifying support or opposition was reported.
What was changing inside the restaurants?
The remodel test proposed more comfortable seating, brighter lighting, lighter paint, and fewer antiques. Signature elements such as fireplaces were to remain. For some customers, the antiques were part of the restaurant’s identity: AP quoted Jerry Love, speaking outside a Cracker Barrel in Vicksburg, Mississippi, as saying he preferred the “antique-type” decorations the company planned to remove.

The test was limited. The Associated Press reported that just four of Cracker Barrel’s 660 restaurants had been remodeled under the program. The chain had not rolled the modern design out across its restaurants when it suspended the plan.
What did the suspension mean for stores and upkeep?
Cracker Barrel said restaurants that had not yet been remodeled would not be remodeled under the suspended plan. Its statement, reproduced by ABC News, put it plainly: “If your restaurant hasn’t been remodeled, you don’t need to worry, it won’t be.” The company also said it would continue investing in restaurants to keep them in good condition and meet guest expectations. Suspending the test remodels was not an announcement that it would stop ordinary repairs or maintenance.

Was the remodel plan the whole transformation strategy?
No. Cracker Barrel announced a broader transformation plan in May 2024 under CEO Julie Felss Masino. It addressed the company’s relevance and included remodel tests alongside dinner-menu changes and more efficient kitchens. The September 2025 announcement suspended the remodel program; it did not, by itself, say that every other element of the transformation plan had been canceled.
In October 2025 shareholder material, the company described a three-year capital investment plan of $600 million to $700 million covering a range of spending, including baseline investment, upkeep, technology, loyalty, and strategic initiatives. Cracker Barrel also reported investing $23 million on remodels over two years. Neither figure is a remodel-only budget: the larger amount covered the broader capital plan, while the remodel figure was a reported past investment.

What happened later?
Later developments provide context for Cracker Barrel’s business, but the company did not identify them as consequences of the remodel decision. In a July 20, 2026 release, Cracker Barrel reported that comparable restaurant sales declined approximately 2.5% while comparable retail sales rose approximately 0.5% in the first 11 weeks of fiscal Q4 2026. It also announced a sale-leaseback transaction involving 26 company-owned Cracker Barrel stores and the sale of certain Maple Street Biscuit Company assets, with the remaining 16 Maple Street locations to close.
On July 27, 2026, Axios reported that Masino would step down as CEO and board member effective August 10, and that David Deno would succeed her. Axios connected the leadership change to broader backlash and a sales slump; it did not establish that the remodel reversal alone caused the change.
