A new allowlisted address takes 48 hours to become available on Coinbase.com, so set it up before you need to send funds.
Choose strong sign-in verification—and keep a backup
Coinbase recommends a security key or passkey for 2-step verification and advises having more than one method available. Its suggested combinations include two security keys, or a passkey plus a security key. A backup matters because losing access to your primary device or credential can make signing in harder.
A passkey is generated on your device. Coinbase says passkeys are not shared or stored on a server. Make sure you can still access your passkey through the device or passkey provider where it is stored, and retain another verification method in case that device is unavailable. A hardware security key is another strong option; check that it works with the devices and browsers you use to access Coinbase.
Coinbase also supports authenticator apps that generate time-based one-time passwords (TOTP), including Duo, Google Authenticator, and Microsoft Authenticator; push notifications; and SMS. Coinbase describes SMS as its least secure 2-step method. These options can serve as alternatives or backups, but they are not equivalent in account-takeover resistance. A TOTP app is a no-purchase option; a FIDO2 security key is optional, not a requirement.

To set up a method, sign in to Coinbase and open the Security or 2-step verification settings. Follow the prompts for the method you choose, then confirm that your backup method works before relying on it.
Protect the email, password, and devices connected to Coinbase
- Use a unique password. Choose a strong Coinbase password that you do not use elsewhere; a password manager can help generate and store it.
- Secure your linked email. Turn on 2-step verification for that email account. Check its recovery addresses and phone numbers, authorized devices, and forwarding rules.
- Review Coinbase access. Inspect active sessions and authorized apps or devices, and revoke anything you do not recognize. Coinbase recommends changing both the Coinbase and email passwords after an unrecognized sign-in.
- Protect the mobile app locally. Coinbase documents a PIN or biometric lock, such as Touch ID or Face ID, for its mobile app. This adds protection on the device but does not replace account-level 2-step verification.
- Be wary of impersonation. Coinbase’s account-security guidance says, “Coinbase employees will never ask for your password.” Do not give anyone your password, a 2-step code, email access, remote control of your device, or money. Reach Coinbase through a saved bookmark or its official help center, not an unsolicited phone number or social-media account.
Enable the Coinbase.com Address Book allowlist
The allowlist limits crypto sends to addresses saved in your Coinbase.com Address Book. It can reduce the destinations available to someone who gains access to your account, but it cannot prevent every loss—for example, if you are tricked into approving a transfer or your email or device is compromised.

- Sign in to Coinbase.com, open your profile settings, and choose Settings.
- Select Allow list and turn on allowlisting. Complete the requested verification prompt. Coinbase requires access to your 2-step verification method to activate, deactivate, and use the feature.
- Add the destination address with its relevant currency and other requested details. Before saving, verify the address, asset, and network against the destination wallet or exchange.
- Wait for the address to become available before sending funds. Coinbase says a newly added Coinbase.com allowlist address takes 48 hours to activate.
Coinbase also says disabling the allowlist takes 48 hours, except when it is turned off within 8 hours of activation. These are Coinbase.com operational timing rules, not general guarantees about other Coinbase products.

This walkthrough is for Coinbase.com. Coinbase Exchange has separate Address Book and withdrawal-whitelisting documentation; Coinbase says those features are available through Exchange, not Coinbase.com or the Coinbase app. Coinbase International Exchange documentation describes a 24-hour address activation period, rather than Coinbase.com’s 48 hours. Check the help instructions for the exact service you use instead of transferring steps or waiting periods between products.

Allowlisting is one account safeguard, not insurance against all losses. Coinbase’s Account Protection overview says reimbursement, where available, is limited to eligible Coinbase One subscribers in supported regions and is subject to requirements and exclusions. Review the current Account Protection terms rather than assuming a particular transfer will qualify.
