How to File a GST Return and Correct Errors Before They Become Penalties

For India regular taxpayers, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are separate returns. Learn the portal workflow, the limited same-period role of GSTR-1A, and why correction rules vary by country.

GST return filing and error correction depend on the country. For an India regular taxpayer, the ordinary portal route is Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard. GSTR-1 reports outward supplies; GSTR-3B is a separate return. Check the correct form, tax period, filing frequency and current due date before submitting—Canada and New Zealand, for example, use different correction procedures.

First identify your GST jurisdiction and filing obligation

“GST return” does not refer to one universal form or process. The steps below describe the India GST Portal for regular taxpayers, not a substitute for checking the rules that apply to your registration and filing frequency. In Canada, the return is a GST/HST return; New Zealand has its own GST returns and correction rules.

For the India example, GSTR-1 reports outward supply details and GSTR-3B is a separate return. Your taxpayer type and filing frequency determine which returns and periods apply. The GST Portal says GSTR-1 is required even when there has been no business activity, but confirm your own obligations in current portal guidance.

How to file a GST return on India’s GST Portal

  1. Open the returns dashboard. Sign in to the GST Portal and go to Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard.
  2. Select the period and return. Choose the financial year and applicable tax period, then open the relevant return tile.
  3. Prepare GSTR-1. Enter the outward-supply information online, or prepare it using the GST offline tool and upload it. The portal guide also describes third-party application service providers (ASPs) and GST Suvidha Providers (GSPs) as preparation options; they are not a filing requirement.
  4. Check the data and validations. Review invoice-level details, summarized outward supplies and any applicable amendments. Resolve validation messages and correct errors before submission.
  5. Prepare GSTR-3B separately. Review the applicable return for the same filing cycle rather than treating GSTR-1 as a replacement for it.
  6. Preview, verify and retain. Preview the draft, select the authorized signatory, file using an available electronic verification route, and download the filed return. Keep the filed copy and supporting records with your accounting and invoice information.

Check the due date for your period

The GST Portal lists the ordinary GSTR-1 due date as the 11th of the following month for monthly filers and the 13th of the month after the quarter for quarterly filers. Government notifications may extend dates, and the applicable date depends on the taxpayer and period. Treat these as general portal dates, not a substitute for checking the current due date for your return.

How to fix an India GSTR-1 error

Same period: use GSTR-1A before filing GSTR-3B

The GST Portal describes optional Form GSTR-1A as a way to amend a record already reported in that period’s GSTR-1 or add a missed record. It becomes available after GSTR-1 has been filed or after its due date, whichever is later, and can be filed before GSTR-3B for that period. It is available once for the period, and its changes flow into GSTR-3B. The portal guide says the supplier’s changes appear for the recipient’s input tax credit in the next period’s GSTR-2B.

Earlier-period invoice details: amend within the applicable window

The portal guide describes amendments to earlier GSTR-1 invoice details through GSTR-1. It gives November 30 of the following financial year as the cutoff for errors or omissions relating to the previous financial year; its example is November 30, 2023 for FY 2022–23. That example is not a current-year deadline. Check the applicable rules and cutoff for the financial year you need to correct before relying on a date.

Filed GSTR-3B or another return: confirm the correction route

Do not apply the GSTR-1A process to an incorrect filed GSTR-3B or assume one correction method covers every return type. The available India guidance does not establish a complete procedure for every filed-return error. Identify the affected return, tax period, field and tax amount, then check current GST Portal instructions or consult a qualified tax adviser for the applicable correction route.

How Canada and New Zealand handle filed-return corrections

These examples show why a correction method must not be carried over from one country to another.

Jurisdiction Correction approach described by the tax authority Important qualification
Canada The Canada Revenue Agency says not to file a new GST/HST return to correct one already filed. Its online route is “Adjust a return” in the account; a signed mail request is another option. A mail request must identify the business number, reporting period and corrected amounts. Penalties and interest are subject to Canadian rules, not India’s.
New Zealand Inland Revenue accepts eligible corrections in myIR, in the next return, or by asking Inland Revenue to amend the return. Its guide says not to send a replacement return. Next-period corrections are allowed only for certain GST calculation errors within stated thresholds. The correction must include details such as the affected period, amount, reason and supporting information.

Review the return to reduce avoidable problems

  • Match return figures to invoices and accounting records, and check the tax period and filing frequency before submission.
  • Review the system-generated draft and resolve validation messages rather than assuming a submitted return is correct.
  • Save the filed return and the records that support its reported amounts.
  • Check displayed late fees or interest against current authority guidance. GSTN’s March 6, 2026 advisory says the portal auto-calculates interest on delayed GSTR-3B filing and offers a recomputation option if the displayed amount appears discrepant. The advisory also describes a technical issue affecting some taxpayers’ interest calculations for the February 2026 period, involving the minimum cash balance in the electronic cash ledger. That is a period-specific notice, not a guarantee that every system calculation is correct.

Why there is no single GST penalty amount

A penalty depends on the jurisdiction, return, period, amount and applicable law. The available guidance does not establish one India penalty figure for every filing error, so do not rely on a generic amount. As a separate example, the Canada Revenue Agency says a late GST/HST return may attract a penalty if money is owed and overdue balances may accrue interest; its calculation and exceptions are governed by Canadian rules. Check the relevant authority’s current guidance for your own filing.
