The right choice depends on the operating system and developer framework you need, whether your models fit the device’s memory, and how the exact computers perform on your workload. Qualcomm documents an X Elite Hexagon NPU rated at up to 45 TOPS; Apple’s M5 MacBook Air lists a 16-core Neural Engine, GPU Neural Accelerators, and 153 GB/s memory bandwidth. Those vendor specifications are not a matched performance test.
What the published specifications do—and don’t—show
Qualcomm rates the Snapdragon X Elite’s integrated Hexagon NPU at up to 45 TOPS, a vendor specification for the NPU’s AI performance (Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite specifications). Apple lists a 16-core Neural Engine, GPU Neural Accelerators, and 153 GB/s memory bandwidth for the M5 MacBook Air (Apple MacBook Air technical specifications).
These figures describe different things. TOPS, Neural Engine core count, and memory bandwidth are not interchangeable measures of the same workload. They do not establish which system runs a given local model faster, more efficiently, or for longer. Apple also says M5 delivers over 4x the peak GPU compute performance for AI versus M4; that is Apple’s M5-to-M4 comparison, not a Snapdragon-versus-Apple result (Apple’s M5 announcement, October 15, 2025).
How the software stacks differ
Snapdragon X Elite and Windows
Qualcomm’s Windows-oriented developer options include Windows ML, ONNX Runtime, Qualcomm AI Engine Direct, and workflows through Qualcomm AI Hub. Qualcomm describes support for working with models from ONNX, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and TensorFlow Lite, including converting, quantizing, optimizing, and offloading models to AI engines (Qualcomm Windows on Snapdragon AI overview).

In a September 24, 2025 announcement, Qualcomm said Windows ML had become generally available for Snapdragon X Elite. Qualcomm describes it as a local inference framework powered by ONNX Runtime that can select available CPU, GPU, or NPU hardware, with an option for an application to specify a preferred target (Qualcomm’s Windows ML announcement). Whether a particular model uses the NPU as intended still depends on its runtime, operators, and configuration.
Apple Silicon and Apple platforms
Apple’s developer stack includes Core AI for newer on-device AI model architectures and inference workflows, Core ML for integrating machine-learning models into apps, and MLX for experimenting with, training, and fine-tuning generative models on Apple Silicon. Apple also provides Metal and Xcode-integrated tooling (Apple Developer: AI and Machine Learning).

The tools serve different workflows rather than forming a direct substitute for every Windows option. For an Apple-platform app, check whether the model and required operations work with the intended Apple framework. For local Mac experimentation, assess the model’s compatibility and memory needs in the framework you plan to use.
Choose by your operating system, model, and memory needs
| Decision point | Snapdragon X Elite / Windows | Apple Silicon / Apple platforms |
|---|---|---|
| Where to start | Check Windows ML, ONNX Runtime, and Qualcomm AI Engine Direct support for your application and model. | Choose among Core AI, Core ML, or MLX based on the app or experimentation workflow. |
| Key compatibility check | Confirm the model’s operators and runtime support, and verify that the intended accelerator is actually used. | Confirm that the model works with the chosen framework and fits the target Mac’s available unified memory. |
| Hardware evidence cited here | Qualcomm specifies up to 45 TOPS for the X Elite Hexagon NPU; laptop features vary by OEM design. | Apple lists a 16-core Neural Engine, GPU Neural Accelerators, and 153 GB/s memory bandwidth for the M5 MacBook Air. |
| What the specification alone cannot establish | Comparative speed, power use, or sustained performance on a particular model. | Comparative speed, power use, or sustained performance on a particular model. |
For local language models and other memory-intensive workloads, accelerator specifications are only part of the decision: the model must fit the system’s usable memory. Apple’s M5 MacBook Air specifications include configurable unified-memory options, so check the configuration of the specific device rather than assuming every M5 MacBook Air has the same capacity (Apple MacBook Air technical specifications). For Snapdragon laptops, confirm the memory and other configuration details of the specific OEM model.

How to compare two computers fairly
A useful performance comparison tests the actual retail devices you are considering, not just processor names. Keep the workload constant and record the conditions so the result answers your question rather than measuring unrelated differences.
- Identify the devices. Record the exact laptop models and configurations, including memory, power mode, and operating-system version.
- Use the same workload. Run the same model, input or prompt set, precision or quantization, and batch size on both systems.
- Record the software path. Note the runtime and its version, the framework, and which accelerator—CPU, GPU, or NPU—actually handled the work.
- Measure beyond a peak figure. Where relevant, compare first-token latency, steady-state throughput, memory use, power consumption, and thermal behavior during sustained runs.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. Keep measurement methods and power settings consistent, and report them with the results.
Without that kind of matched test, neither peak TOPS nor a vendor’s within-generation comparison can settle which platform is better for a particular on-device AI workload.
