For Indian nationals, the right Swiss visa depends first on the purpose of travel and how long the stay will last. Short visits generally use a Schengen C visa; stays over 90 days for study or family reunification generally follow a national D-visa process, while employment also requires work authorization. A visa is not, by itself, permission to work or reside in Switzerland.
Which Swiss visa do Indian nationals need?
Indian nationals require a visa for both short stays and stays longer than 90 days. The route depends on the trip’s purpose and duration. The Swiss State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) distinguishes short-stay Schengen C visas from national D visas for long stays, while purpose-specific authorization may also be required.
Use the table as a starting point, not as a document checklist. The Swiss Embassy in India’s current instructions and the competent canton’s requirements govern the application details.
| Purpose | General route | Who handles the underlying decision or authorization? | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tourism or a short visit to family or friends | Schengen C visa, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period | Swiss representation processes the visa | Current visit checklist, purpose evidence, financial means, insurance, and any invitation or sponsorship documents requested |
| Employment | Appropriate entry visa plus work authorization | Competent Swiss canton or employment authority handles authorization; the representation issues the visa after the necessary approval | Employer and canton process, work duration and category, and current India work checklist |
| Study for more than 90 days | National D visa | Competent canton reviews the long-stay application; the representation issues the visa after approval | Student checklist, admission and financial evidence, translations, and appointment requirements |
| Family reunification for more than three months | National D visa | Relevant cantonal migration office handles authorization; the representation issues the visa after approval | Sponsor’s status, qualifying relationship, language requirements, and the current family-reunification checklist |
Tourism and short visits: the Schengen C visa
A short trip to Switzerland for tourism or to visit family or friends generally falls under the Schengen category C visa. It permits a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This is a rolling Schengen-area limit, not a fresh 90 days for each country visited. A C visa is valid across the Schengen area unless the visa itself says otherwise.

Applicants should be ready to document why they are travelling, how they will support themselves, and how they will pay for their return or onward journey. Swiss entry conditions also cover a recognized travel document, security and public-order checks, and other admissibility requirements. Medical insurance is among the requirements identified for visa-required applicants; confirm the applicable coverage rules for the specific route.
For a visit to family or friends, an invitation letter may be requested, but it should not be treated as universally mandatory. The Embassy’s current India checklist determines which documents apply, along with the appointment channel, fee, submission arrangements, and any sponsorship evidence.
Work: a visa does not authorize employment
Employment requires both the applicable entry visa and work authorization. SEM states that a person entering Switzerland to pursue gainful employment must hold a valid Schengen visa and a work permit. A job offer alone does not establish that the applicant has permission to work; the employer and competent Swiss authority are involved in the authorization process.
For an India-based applicant seeking an entry visa for work, the Embassy’s general list includes cantonal authorization, a long-stay D application, a valid passport, a recent photograph, and visa fees. The exact process depends on the work category and its duration, so applicants should follow the employer’s and canton’s instructions as well as the applicable Embassy checklist.

A separate India checklist addresses work permits for up to 120 days. These are distinct administrative contexts, not a single rule that converts a short stay into permission to work. Confirm which procedure applies to the specific job before filing.
Study: choose the route by the length and circumstances of study
Study lasting more than 90 days generally uses the national D-visa process and the dedicated student checklist published by the Swiss Embassy in India. The Embassy forwards national-visa applications to the competent Swiss canton for a decision. The responsible representation can issue the visa only after the required approval.

SEM includes attending school or studying among the purposes that may fall under a short-stay C visa. A shorter course or study-related visit may therefore use the C route depending on its circumstances; duration alone should not be used to assume that every case follows the same procedure.
There is no one universal document list for all students. Check the current student checklist for the applicant’s circumstances, including admission evidence, financial documents, education records, translations, and any case-specific requirements. The relevant canton may also provide instructions for the long-stay decision.
Family reunification: the sponsor and canton matter
Family reunification for a stay exceeding three months is handled as a national-visa purpose. The Swiss Embassy in India publishes a dedicated checklist, and authorization falls within the competence of the migration office of the relevant canton. Depending on the case, supporting evidence may include information about the Swiss-based spouse, parent, or other relevant host, such as a copy of that person’s Swiss residence or work permit.
The relationship label alone does not establish eligibility. Requirements can depend on the sponsor’s status, the relationship, the applicant’s circumstances, the canton, and language requirements. The Embassy’s India materials include separate guidance on proof of language skills for family reunification. Check both the current checklist and the relevant canton’s instructions before preparing the application.
Who decides the application?
SEM sets federal entry and visa rules but does not issue visas. Swiss representations abroad handle visa issuance and refusals. For the long-stay cases described by the Swiss Embassy in India, the application is forwarded to the competent cantonal authority; the representation can issue the visa after the necessary approval.
The application form also depends on the route: SEM distinguishes the Schengen form for short stays from the national D form for long-term stays over three months that are subject to authorization, including employment and family reunification. Use the form specified for the purpose and stay rather than submitting a generic application.

Documents, appointments and fees: use the India-specific instructions
General entry conditions are not a complete application checklist. The Embassy’s current checklist for the relevant purpose controls the supporting documents and filing procedure. Depending on the case, applicants may need to address:
- A valid, recognized travel document and the required application form and photograph.
- Evidence of the purpose and circumstances of travel, such as visit details, admission evidence, or cantonal authorization.
- Evidence of adequate financial means and any return or onward-travel arrangements relevant to the route.
- Medical insurance under the requirements applicable to the visa category.
- Documents relating to an employer, educational institution, or family sponsor, where applicable.
- Translations, appointment arrangements, submission location, and the current fee specified by the Embassy or canton.
Do not assume that a document required for one category applies to every other category, or that a general online list is exhaustive. Requirements can change, and the Embassy and cantonal authority may require additional evidence for an individual case.
How long does a Swiss national visa take in India?
The Swiss Embassy in India gives an indicative processing time of approximately 8–12 weeks for national-visa applications. The Embassy published this estimate on 19 January 2026 and cautions that timing varies considerably, including with the canton and details of the application. It is an estimate, not a service guarantee. Confirm current timing and appointment availability before making travel plans.
The estimate is specifically for national visas; do not apply it automatically to every short-stay C application or to work authorization decisions. Allow for the steps required by the relevant route, including cantonal review where applicable.
Quick Recap
Before you apply
- Identify the purpose and duration. Decide whether the trip is tourism or a visit, employment, study, or family reunification, and calculate any short stay against the 90-days-in-any-180-days Schengen limit.
- Confirm the route and form. Check whether the case calls for a Schengen C or national D application, and whether separate work, study, or family authorization is required.
- Check the current India checklist. Use the Swiss Embassy’s checklist for the exact purpose and confirm current fees, appointments, submission arrangements, insurance, and document or translation requirements.
- Identify the competent canton where relevant. For long-stay purposes, follow the canton’s process and provide any required authorization or supporting evidence.
- File with realistic timing. For a national visa, account for the Embassy’s approximate 8–12-week estimate and its warning that processing may vary considerably; avoid relying on that estimate as a guarantee.
