To estimate how a repo rate hike affects your floating-rate loan EMI, use the loan’s outstanding balance and remaining instalments on the date your lender’s revised rate takes effect. Calculate the EMI at the old and new contractual rates using the same balance and term. The difference is an estimate of the monthly impact; your lender’s reset notice and revised repayment schedule determine the actual payment and payoff date.
Calculate the EMI change in six steps
- Get the outstanding principal. Use the balance on the date the new rate takes effect—not the original sanctioned loan amount.
- Confirm the revised contractual rate and effective date. Check the lender’s reset notice or loan agreement for the benchmark, spread and resulting rate. Do not assume the loan rate changes by exactly the same amount as the RBI repo rate.
- Find the instalments remaining. Count the monthly payments from the reset date. If a partial month, irregular payment or non-monthly schedule applies, use the lender’s repayment schedule.
- Convert the annual rate to a monthly decimal. Divide the annual percentage rate by 12 and then by 100. For example, a hypothetical annual rate of 8.4% becomes 0.007 per month.
- Calculate the EMI at both rates. Use the same outstanding balance and remaining instalments for the old-rate and new-rate calculations.
- Compare with the lender’s revised schedule. Check the proposed EMI, remaining instalments, total remaining interest and final payment date. Rounding and payment timing can make the lender’s figures differ slightly from a hand calculation.
The standard monthly amortizing-loan formula is:
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1)
- P is the principal outstanding when the revised rate takes effect.
- r is the annual interest rate divided by 12 and 100.
- n is the number of monthly instalments remaining.
Calculate once using the old annual rate and once using the revised annual rate. Subtract the old-rate EMI from the new-rate EMI to estimate the monthly difference attributable to the rate change at that reset. This is an estimate: a lender may accrue interest daily, apply fees or rate floors, use another payment frequency, or adjust for dates and rounding.
Worked example: an illustrative calculation
Suppose, purely for illustration, a borrower has ₹30,00,000 outstanding, 240 monthly instalments remaining, and a contractual rate that changes from 8.0% to 8.5% annually. The old monthly rate is 0.08 ÷ 12; the new one is 0.085 ÷ 12. Applying the formula with the same ₹30,00,000 balance and 240 instalments gives an EMI of about ₹25,093 at 8.0% and ₹26,035 at 8.5%—an estimated increase of about ₹942 per month.
These are formula-based estimates, not a lender quotation. Your figures will depend on the actual outstanding balance, contractual rate, reset date, remaining schedule and servicing calculations.

Why a repo rate change may not match your loan-rate change
A repo-linked loan’s interest rate is not necessarily identical to the RBI policy repo rate. The contractual lending rate may combine a benchmark with a spread and other terms. The loan changes when its benchmark resets under the agreement, which may not be the same day as the RBI’s policy announcement. Use the revised rate and effective date in the lender’s communication rather than applying the policy-rate movement directly to your balance or EMI. RBI materials discuss benchmarked floating lending and reset arrangements, and Central Bank of India’s Base Rate / RBLR page illustrates a repo-based lending-rate composition. See the RBI’s Handbook on Regulations at a Glance for regulatory context.
The RBI current-rates page reported a policy repo rate of 5.25% as at September 11, 2026. That dated figure does not establish the rate on October 7, 2026. Consult the RBI current-rates page for the applicable current figure.

Could your tenure increase instead of your EMI?
Yes. A lender may respond to a rate change by increasing the EMI, extending the repayment period, or combining the two, depending on the loan agreement and applicable rules. If your EMI stays the same while the rate rises, ask for the revised amortization schedule: it shows how many instalments remain, how much interest is due, and the new expected payoff date. Do not infer the tenure impact from the EMI formula alone; the lender’s schedule reflects its repayment and interest-accrual method.
What options and notices may apply in India
The RBI’s August 18, 2023 circular on EMI-based floating-rate personal loans says lenders should explain the possible impact of benchmark changes on EMI and/or tenure and communicate subsequent increases. At reset, the framework includes options such as an EMI increase, tenure extension, or a combination; part or full prepayment subject to applicable terms; and a switch to a fixed rate under the lender’s board-approved policy. Ask your lender which choices apply to your specific loan and what fees, prepayment terms or future reset rules govern them. The circular does not apply uniformly to every loan: the RBI FAQ says its scope is equated periodic instalment-based personal loans, not other loan products. Read the RBI circular and the RBI FAQ on reset of floating interest rates.

If the lender offers choices, compare their effects using the lender’s revised schedule rather than looking only at the next EMI. For a higher EMI versus a longer tenure, or a fixed-rate switch versus remaining floating, consider:
