A speedrun archive channel compiles video game speedruns into continuous loops or themed compilations. Unlike traditional gaming channels that require live play and commentary, a speedrun archive is 100 percent passive. You curate existing speedruns (often from other creators), license them, edit them together, upload them, and let them run. The audience is dedicated—speedrunning communities are tight and engaged—and the operational cost is near zero.
Keep a Speedrun Archive Live Without Running a PC
StreamNeo lets you upload the finished archive video and paste your YouTube stream key so the broadcast runs in the cloud while your PC stays off. That fits a long speedrun loop especially well, since you do not need to dedicate a desktop to keeping the channel live.
Use the free 24-hour 720p/30fps trial with no card at signup to test a first licensed archive before committing to a longer schedule. StreamNeo checks stream health every 30 seconds and automatically restarts dropped streams, giving you a practical way to verify unattended playback.
The legal challenge is straightforward: you must have permission from each speedrunner whose video you feature, and the game publisher must allow streaming that specific game (most do, but some don’t). The financial opportunity is real—a speedrun channel with 500+ concurrent viewers generates $300-$800 per month with almost no ongoing work.

Understanding Speedrun Archive Rights
You cannot legally archive speedruns without explicit permission from the speedrunner. A speedrun video is a creative work owned by the person who recorded, edited, and uploaded it. Recording a YouTube video, downloading it, and re-uploading it (even with attribution) is copyright infringement.
The correct process:
1. Find a speedrun you want to feature
2. Identify the creator (usually obvious from the YouTube channel)
3. Contact them with your request: “I run a speedrun archive channel with [X subscribers]. I’d like to feature your [game] speedrun in a compilation. Can I license it.”
4. Get written permission (email is fine) stating they grant you rights to use the speedrun in a YouTube archive channel
5. Cite them in the description and on-screen (credits)
6. Archive their speedrun
Most speedrunners will grant permission immediately. The community values exposure and documentation. Some will ask for a small fee ($10-50) or for you to link to their Twitch/channel in the description. This is fair—you’re building an audience from their work.
Game Publisher Permissions
Most game publishers allow speedrunning and streaming. The exceptions are rare but important.
Games you CAN stream:
– Nintendo games (Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid) are heavily streamed
– FromSoftware games (Dark Souls, Elden Ring) allow streaming
– Platformers and indie games almost universally allow it
– Shooters (Call of Duty, Valorant) allow it
– Blizzard games allow it
Games with restrictions:
– Some obscure Japanese games restrict streaming in certain regions
– A handful of indie developers prohibit streaming and archive (this is rare but exists)
– Games with licensed music (especially sports games) may restrict streaming in certain territories
For every speedrun you want to archive, check:
1. The game publisher’s streaming policy (usually on their website or ToS)
2. YouTube’s game-specific policies (some games are simply not allowed on YouTube)
3. Rights to any licensed music in the speedrun

A speedrun archive can be organized in two ways:
Option 1: Game-specific channels. One channel streams only Super Mario 64 speedruns. Another streams only Zelda runs. This is simpler legally (you deal with one game publisher) and builds a focused audience, but requires managing multiple channels.
Option 2: Multi-game compilation. One channel streams speedruns of multiple games. This reaches a broader audience and requires less curation depth, but increases the complexity of rights management.
For a beginner, a single-game channel is simpler. Choose a popular speedrun game (Mario 64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Metroid) with an active speedrunning community and explicit permission policies.
Curating the Speedrun Loop
A speedrun archive should feel like a radio station, not a random collection. Curate speedruns that:
- Represent different skill levels. A loop of only world-record runs is impressive but monotonous. Include sub-optimal runs, first-time successes, and world records. Viewers appreciate the variety.
- Include different categories. If you’re archiving Mario 64, include 70-star, 120-star, and 16-star categories. Different runs have different paces and challenges.
- Highlight emerging speedrunners. Don’t curate only established names. Feature up-and-coming runners. This builds community engagement and loyalty from newer creators.
- Rotate monthly. Change the speedrun selection every month. Add new runs, remove ones that didn’t resonate. Keep the content fresh.
A typical speedrun archive loop is 6-12 hours long (depending on how many runs you’ve licensed). A 6-hour loop might contain:
– 10-15 individual speedruns (30-45 minutes each)
– Interspersed with 30-second graphics showing speedrunner name, category, and personal record time
– Opening graphic with your channel branding (5 seconds)
– Closing graphic looping back to the opener
Editing the Speedrun Archive Video
Essential editing:
– Remove dead time: Cut out deaths, failed segments, or long load screens if they exceed the normal. Keep the speedrun’s natural pace, but trim excessive downtime.
– Add metadata overlays: Display the speedrunner’s name, game, category, and their personal record for that run. Update this for each new speedrun in the compilation.
– Audio normalization: Speedruns often have varying audio levels (some recorded from Twitch, some from OBS, some from console capture). Normalize all audio to -14 LUFS so there’s no jarring volume jump between runs.
– Color grading consistency: If speedruns are from different sources, apply consistent color grading so the visual tone doesn’t shift radically.

Optional polish:
– Add a lower-third graphic with the speedrunner’s name and category
– Include speedrun leaderboard position (e.g., “10th Fastest 120-Star Run”)
– Insert a 2-3 second recap after each run with the finish time
Export the final video in H.264 at 1080p60 (speedruns benefit from high frame rates because motion is rapid). A 6-hour archive is roughly 20-30 GB.

Speedrun audiences are niche but engaged. A speedrun channel with consistent uploads and quality curation reaches monetization quickly because viewers return repeatedly.
Expected metrics:
– Subscriber growth: 500-1000 subscribers in 3-4 months (speedrunning communities are tight and word-of-mouth travels fast)
– CPM: $1.00-$2.50 per 1000 views (gamer audience, moderate CPM)
– Super Chat: Moderate to high (speedrun communities are generous with donations)
– Watch time: Very high (viewers watch for 3-6 hours per session, following speedruns they’re invested in)
A speedrun archive channel with 300-500 concurrent viewers generates $250-$600 per month in combined ad revenue and Super Chat. Operational cost is zero (no music licensing required, game footage is covered by license, speedrunner permissions are often free).
Growth and Community Building
A speedrun archive channel grows through:
Community engagement: Reply to comments. Speedrunners whose runs you feature will promote your channel. Building relationships with speedrunners drives growth exponentially.

This prevents the mistake of uploading a run without confirmed permission.
Technical Setup: Scheduling and Uploading
Create a new archive video every 2-4 weeks. Upload to YouTube as a public video or unlisted (depending on whether you want YouTube algorithm promotion). Most speedrun archives go public because the audience actively seeks them.
Schedule the upload for a consistent time (say, Tuesday at 2pm UTC). Speedrunners will promote their feature, and consistent upload times build viewership habits.
Avoid Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Archiving a speedrun without permission. This results in copyright claims from the speedrunner. A single claim won’t demonetize your channel, but multiple strikes will.
Mistake 2: Including a game that the publisher doesn’t allow streaming. Nintendo is generally permissive, but some Japanese publishers explicitly prohibit YouTube archives. Check the ToS before archiving.

- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Mistake 3: Over-editing the speedrun. Speedrunners want their run featured authentically. Cut dead time, yes, but don’t add music, effects, or commentary the speedrunner didn’t create. Let the run speak.
Mistake 4: Failing to credit the speedrunner. Always include the speedrunner’s name on-screen and in the description with a link to their channel. This is both legal obligation and community norm.
Scaling: Multiple Games or Channels
A successful speedrun archive will eventually archive multiple games. Options:
- One channel, multiple games: Feature Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Castlevania speedruns on one channel. This reaches a broader audience but requires more curation.
- Separate channels per game: Each game gets its own channel. This is more work to manage but allows deep community building for each game.
Start with one game, prove the model works (reach 1000 subscribers), then expand.

First Steps
- Choose a speedrun game with a large community (Mario 64, Zelda: OoT, Super Metroid).
- Check the game publisher’s streaming policy.
- Identify 10-15 recent speedruns you want to feature.
- Contact each speedrunner with a permission request.
- Once you have written permission for 10+ runs, download the runs (with permission, directly from their YouTube channel or via their own distribution).
- Edit them together into a 6-hour loop with consistent metadata and audio.
- Test the video locally by watching 1-2 complete cycles.
- Create a YouTube channel, optimize the description with speedrun keywords.
- Upload your first archive and promote it to the speedrunning community.
A speedrun archive is one of the least time-intensive profitable channels on YouTube. You’re not creating content—you’re curating and archiving. The speedrunning community is passionate and supportive. If you build the archive with respect and quality, growth follows naturally.
Leaving a desktop running 24/7 to encode this level of video is impractical—the file sizes are massive and encoding takes hours. StreamNeo removes that burden: upload your archive video once, paste your YouTube stream key, and the archive runs from the cloud with your computer off. The stream stays live without your machine drawing power or requiring restarts. If the stream drops, it restarts automatically. There is a free 24-hour trial and no card required, which is enough time to stream your first archive unattended and confirm the speedruns play cleanly.
