Indian citizens generally need a Swiss work permit and, for entry to take up a job, a separate national visa. A job offer alone is not permission to work: in the ordinary route, the Swiss employer applies to the canton and must show that the candidate and job meet Switzerland’s third-country admission rules. After the authorities approve the application, the worker obtains the required visa, enters Switzerland, registers locally and only then starts work.
Who can qualify for a Swiss work permit?
India is a non-EU/EFTA country for Swiss work-admission purposes. The ordinary employment route for third-country nationals is generally limited to managers, specialists and other qualified workers. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) describes the typical candidate as someone with a university or other higher-education degree and several years of professional experience. Depending on the occupation, special training and relevant experience may also be considered.
Authorities assess the candidate’s qualifications and career record, including the CV, education certificates and employment references. A Swiss employer must be willing to sponsor the case; an individual cannot turn a job search or offer into work authorization simply by applying for a visa.
What must the Swiss employer prove?
The employer’s application is central to the ordinary route. A signed contract should make employment conditional on the work permit being granted, and the employer must support the application with evidence about the recruitment process, the candidate and the proposed job.

Recruitment precedence
The employer must show genuine efforts to find a suitable candidate in Switzerland or the EU/EFTA before hiring a third-country national. Evidence can include advertisements through relevant channels and a list of candidates considered, with brief reasons they lacked the required qualifications. Depending on the occupation and unemployment threshold, the vacancy may also need to be registered with a regional employment centre.
Qualifications, pay and economic interest
The employer must explain why the candidate is suitably qualified and why the admission is in Switzerland’s overall economic interest. The offered salary, social-security contributions and other employment conditions must be customary for the region, occupation and sector. A job offer that fails these tests is not made eligible simply because the employer has found a willing applicant.
Quota availability
The application must also fit within the applicable annual quota. A quota place is only a ceiling on admissions, not proof that the candidate qualifies or a guarantee that a permit will be issued.
What are the Swiss work-permit quotas for 2026?
On 19 November 2025, the Swiss Federal Council decided to keep the 2026 quotas for qualified workers from third countries unchanged. They are national limits for third-country nationals as a group; the announcement does not set aside a separate number for Indian applicants.
Rank #3
| Permit category | 2026 national quota | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| B residence permits | 4,500 | Part of the national quota for qualified third-country workers and specialists; not an India-specific allocation. |
| L short-stay permits | 4,000 | Part of the same national quota; not an India-specific allocation. |
| Total | 8,500 | Combined 2026 national maximum for qualified third-country workers and specialists. |
These figures are from the Federal Council’s 2025 announcement for 2026. They do not mean that all places are available at any particular time, nor that an Indian applicant can claim a place. The canton and federal authorities still assess the full application.
How does an Indian applicant apply?
- Secure a genuine offer. Confirm that the Swiss employer is prepared to sponsor the application and provide the recruitment, qualification and employment evidence. SEM’s working FAQ says, “First of all, you need a firm job offer from a Swiss employer.”
- Have the employer file with the canton. The employer submits the work-permit application and supporting documents to the competent cantonal employment or immigration authority. The responsible office and filing requirements depend on the canton where the job is based.
- Wait for cantonal and federal decisions. The canton reviews the application and makes a preliminary decision. A file approved at cantonal level is sent to SEM for federal review. The decision is communicated to the applicant or employee and the authorities; approval at this stage does not itself authorize entry into Switzerland.
- Apply for the entry visa. India is listed by SEM as visa-required for stays both under and over 90 days. For a work entry, the Swiss Embassy in India’s general checklist includes cantonal authorization, a long-stay (D) visa application, a valid original passport, a recent photograph and the visa fee. Work authorization and the visa are separate steps.
- Enter and register before starting work. After arrival, register with the competent local authority at the Swiss place of residence within 14 days. SEM states that work may begin only after registration.
SEM’s undated FAQ, accessed on 7 October 2026, says that full processing generally takes six to eight weeks in its experience. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed service standard; complex cases, first-time employer applications and other special circumstances may take longer. Build time for both authorization and the visa process, and check current instructions with the canton and the Embassy before making travel arrangements.
Does the 90-day notification procedure let an Indian citizen work in Switzerland?
Not for an ordinary job with a Swiss employer. The notification procedure is not a general short-term work shortcut for Indian citizens. SEM describes a narrow third-country posting case: the worker is posted by an employer based in an EU/EFTA state and has already been integrated long-term into that state’s labour market. SEM says this is generally evidenced by holding a standard or permanent residence permit there for at least 12 months. Other categories do not qualify for notification and require the applicable Swiss permit. Anyone considering a posting should ask the competent canton about the specific arrangement rather than infer eligibility from nationality or a stay of fewer than 90 days.

The Swiss Embassy in India warns of fraudulent emails and letters that impersonate Swiss educational institutions or promise jobs to extract money. Treat an unsolicited offer or demand for payment as a reason to verify the sender and the job directly. The Embassy advises checking a Swiss job offer with it. It also says visa fees are paid to the Embassy or VFS at the scheduled appointment, not through another payment route in exchange for a visa.

Best Value
- Do not treat a job offer, permit promise or quota claim as proof that authorization has been granted.
- Verify who the employer is and whether the Swiss employer will file the cantonal application.
- Use the Embassy’s current instructions for the visa checklist and fee payment; do not pay unofficial intermediaries on the promise of a visa or job placement.
Because cantonal filing details, visa checklists and quota availability can change, confirm the current requirements with the authority responsible for the workplace and the Swiss Embassy in India before submitting documents or booking travel.
