The announcement was about 2024—not a current forecast—and Wendy’s did not provide a list of affected restaurants in the contemporaneous report.
What Wendy’s announced in 2024
After an investor call on October 31, 2024, Wendy’s said it planned to close 140 additional U.S. restaurants before year-end. The company had announced 100 closures in May. The Associated Press reported the additional plan on November 1, 2024, describing the targeted restaurants as underperforming. CEO Kirk Tanner said some were outdated and “just in locations that don’t build our brands.” He also said, “You look at a brand that’s 55 years old and some of those restaurants are quite out of date.” Associated Press, November 1, 2024.
Wendy’s said it expected to open 250 to 300 restaurants in 2024 as well. Tanner said the company was focused on new restaurants because they performed well above the average of the poorly performing locations it planned to close. These were management’s stated rationale and plans, not a guarantee that every planned opening or closure would occur.
Which Wendy’s locations were closing?
The November 2024 AP report did not include a list of affected restaurants; it said the locations were spread across the country. It therefore does not establish whether any particular restaurant was on the closure list, or how many closures would occur in a specific state. The 140 figure cannot be used to identify whether a local restaurant was closing.

For a specific location, check that restaurant’s current status through Wendy’s official restaurant locator or contact the restaurant directly. A general closure announcement is not confirmation about an individual store.
How the 2024 figure differs from later closures
In a 2026 report, the AP said Wendy’s closed 240 U.S. locations in 2024. That retrospective total is the reported outcome for the year; do not add it to the 140 announced as “additional” in October as if the figures covered separate periods. The 140 was a plan announced during 2024, while 240 is the later reported annual total. Associated Press, February 13, 2026.

The 2026 plan followed 28 closures in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to the same AP report. Wendy’s ended 2025 with 5,969 U.S. locations, the report said. Those later figures describe a distinct period and should not be folded into the 2024 announcement.

Wendy’s reported 5,979 U.S. restaurants at the end of the third quarter of 2025, and U.S. same-restaurant sales were down 4.7% year over year for that quarter. The company described its turnaround plan, Project Fresh, as focusing on brand revitalization, operational excellence, system optimization, and capital allocation. Wendy’s later reported that global systemwide sales fell 6.5% year over year in the second quarter of 2026, including an 8.2% decline in the U.S., while international sales rose 3.4%. CEO Bob Wright said, “Our traffic, our value proposition and franchisee economics are not meeting our expectations.” The company outlined further turnaround actions involving menu value, marketing, operations, digital experience, and restaurant growth.
