First identify which stage is pending: a card or bank payment, a crypto provider’s purchase order, an on-chain transfer, or an exchange deposit. Check the status with the service responsible for that stage. A platform’s “pending” label alone does not tell you what happened, and the right next step depends on where the delay is.
Start by identifying what is pending
Use the order record if you bought crypto with a card or bank account. Use the transaction details and the relevant blockchain explorer if crypto was sent on-chain. If a transfer reached an exchange but is not visible in your balance, check the exchange’s deposit status and confirmation requirement.
| What you see | Where to check | Who may need to act |
|---|---|---|
| Bank or card payment, or crypto purchase, marked pending | The purchase order and payment status in the service that processed it | The payment provider, or your bank/card issuer for a lingering hold |
| Crypto send marked pending | The sending wallet or exchange’s transaction details and the explorer for the sending network | The sending service, or your wallet if it offers a supported pending-transaction control |
| Exchange deposit not credited | The receiving exchange’s deposit record, account alerts, and required confirmations | The receiving exchange if the transaction meets its requirements but is still not credited |
If a purchase or bank payment is pending
- Open the purchase order in the app or service where you started it. Look for the provider’s status, an identity-verification request, or an action required for your payment method.
- If you initiated the purchase in a wallet through an outside provider, identify that provider in the order details. MetaMask says the selected provider executes the purchase; MetaMask itself does not fulfill it. See MetaMask’s guide to buying crypto and its provider FAQ.
- If your bank or card shows a charge but the crypto has not arrived, contact the provider that took the order. MetaMask gives this guidance for purchases made through a selected provider.
- If the purchase failed but a card amount still appears as pending, it may be a pre-authorization hold rather than a completed charge. Kraken says it does not claim funds for failed transactions; ask your bank or card issuer about a hold that remains. See Kraken’s payment-decline FAQ.
Do not place a second order until you know what happened to the first. The available support guidance does not establish whether a duplicate order will be blocked or charged separately.
If an on-chain send is pending
- Open the transaction in the sending wallet or exchange and follow its explorer link. Make sure the explorer is for the network used to send; a transaction hash on the wrong network will not verify the transfer you are checking.
- Check that the recipient address and network are the ones you intended. Look for the transaction on the explorer and see whether its confirmation count is increasing. Coinbase and Binance both direct users to blockchain transaction details for status checks; see Coinbase’s pending-transaction guidance and Binance’s blockchain status guide.
- Use the receiving service’s current confirmation requirement to judge whether a deposit is ready to credit. Requirements differ by asset and service and can change; a confirmation count is not a universal definition of completion. Binance notes that confirmation requirements may change. Coinbase Exchange, for example, gives a requirement of 2 confirmations for its BTC deposit example, not for every asset or exchange. See Coinbase Exchange’s deposit example.
- If you use a self-custody wallet, check whether it offers a speed-up or cancel control for this specific pending transaction. MetaMask documents these actions for supported transactions. Whether they are available depends on the wallet, network, and transaction state; a fee change may affect processing, but raising a fee is not always possible or appropriate. Follow the wallet’s own interface and instructions: MetaMask’s pending-transaction guide.
Coinbase Help advises waiting at least 30 minutes for many pending sends before taking its next support step. That is Coinbase-specific guidance, not a universal expected wait. Coinbase also says a temporary loss of synchronization between its nodes and the wider network can delay an update; account or identity tasks may also affect a receive. See Coinbase’s send and receive troubleshooting.

If crypto was sent to an exchange but is not credited
- Ask the sender for the transaction hash or explorer link.
- Compare the destination address and network with the receiving exchange’s deposit instructions. Check that the transaction appears on the correct network and that its confirmations are progressing.
- Check the exchange’s current confirmation requirement and any account alerts or requested actions. An on-chain transaction can be confirmed while an exchange is still processing or reviewing the deposit. Kraken’s deposit-status guidance distinguishes funding stages; see Kraken’s cryptocurrency deposit statuses and its deposit and withdrawal status definitions.
- If the transaction is confirmed on the intended network and address but the exchange has not credited it, contact the receiving exchange through its official in-app support route. Do not follow links or phone numbers sent in unsolicited messages.
When a pending transfer becomes final
Pending may mean a transaction is waiting for network confirmations, but once a successful blockchain transaction is confirmed, it cannot be reversed. MetaMask’s transaction guide states, “Confirmed transactions cannot be reversed.” If a confirmed transfer went to the wrong recipient, MetaMask identifies contacting the receiver and asking them to send the funds back in a new transaction as the recovery option. No wallet or exchange can guarantee that the receiver will do so. See MetaMask’s transaction guide.
