AI Infrastructure Stocks vs. AI Software Stocks: What Investors Should Compare

AI infrastructure and software stocks depend on different paths from AI demand to returns. Compare reported revenue drivers, costs, margins, customer dependencies and the assumptions behind each business.

AI infrastructure stocks depend on demand for the hardware, facilities, power and cloud capacity used to build and run AI systems. AI software stocks depend on turning AI capabilities into paid products, usage and renewals. To compare them, look past the “AI” label and examine each company’s revenue drivers, costs, customer concentration, demand evidence and the conditions it needs to earn an adequate return.

What counts as an AI infrastructure stock or an AI software stock?

These labels describe different links in the AI supply chain, not two uniform sectors. Infrastructure can include semiconductor suppliers, server and networking companies, data-center operators, power and cooling providers, and cloud platforms. Software can include applications, platforms and services that use AI to serve customers. A diversified technology company may have material exposure to more than one layer.

Classify a company by the sources of its reported revenue and the customers paying it—not simply by whether it mentions AI. Where a company does not disclose an AI-specific revenue share, do not assume its total revenue is AI revenue. Company filings offer the most useful starting point for understanding those distinctions: NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 annual report, Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K, Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K, Meta Platforms’ 2025 Form 10-K and C3 AI’s quarterly filing.

How the two business models earn revenue—and what can go wrong

Infrastructure: selling capacity, equipment or access

Infrastructure suppliers may earn revenue when customers order and take delivery of equipment, lease capacity, or consume cloud services. That revenue is not the same as proof that the capacity will ultimately be well utilized or that the customer can earn an adequate return from it. The buildout also entails substantial costs: manufacturing capacity, facilities, equipment, power, networking and depreciation can all affect the economics.

NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 annual report illustrates why rapid sales growth does not guarantee stable margins. NVIDIA reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $215.9 billion, up 65% year over year, and data-center revenue up 68%. Its gross margin was 71.1%, down from 75.0% in fiscal 2025. The company attributed pressure in part to the transition to Blackwell full-scale data-center solutions and a $4.5 billion charge related to H20 excess inventory and purchase obligations. These are NVIDIA-specific fiscal-year figures, not a forecast or a proxy for every infrastructure company.

Software: converting deployments into paid, retained use

Software vendors need to turn trials, deployments and usage into paying adoption and renewals. Revenue may come from subscriptions, licenses, usage charges or services, and those sources can have different durability and margins. Inference and hosting costs, customer mix, pricing, service work and renewal timing can change the economics even when product interest is strong.

C3 AI says its revenue is primarily subscription-based, with consumption charges in some arrangements. It also cautions that remaining performance obligations (RPO) may not accurately indicate future growth when customers pay as they use the product, renewal timing shifts, or a deployment has not converted into a recurring subscription. That is a company-specific example, not proof that all software businesses have the same revenue mix or measurement limitations.

Compare the business on the same decision axes

Use the framework below to identify what must happen for a company to translate AI demand into an adequate return. These are comparison questions, not a standardized scoring model.

What to compare Infrastructure exposure Software exposure What to check
Revenue driver Orders, shipments, capacity leases or cloud consumption Licenses, subscriptions, usage, renewals or services Identify the revenue source the company actually reports and its AI-specific share, if disclosed.
Spending and operating requirements Manufacturing capacity, equipment, facilities, power, networking and depreciation Product development, sales, support and potentially third-party hosting or compute Track capital expenditure, depreciation, hosting expense and cash flow.
Demand evidence Orders, backlog, customer capex plans and utilization Paid deployments, renewal rates, subscription growth, usage and retention Read backlog and RPO using each company’s definitions, exclusions and business model.
Margin exposure Product mix, supply constraints, input costs, pricing and transition costs Hosting and inference costs, customer and services mix, pricing and renewals Read margin changes alongside cost trends and business mix; revenue growth alone is insufficient.
Concentration and dependency Reliance on a small number of large buyers or projects Reliance on a small number of customers, platforms or deployment partners Review customer concentration and contract terms in filings.
Valuation assumptions Capacity, cycle duration, utilization and returns on capital Adoption, retention, recurring revenue and margins Compare businesses carefully; the figures here do not establish which category is cheaper.

Read commitments, spending and revenue figures in context

Company disclosures can help illustrate the scale and direction of activity, but superficially similar figures may measure different things. Microsoft reported $684 billion in revenue allocated to RPO as of June 30, 2026. That is not a pure software-only or AI-only measure. Meta anticipated approximately $115 billion to $135 billion in 2026 capital expenditures in its 2025 Form 10-K to support AI efforts and its core business; that outlook is not exclusively AI spending. RPO and capital expenditure are different metrics from different companies, so they are not directly comparable.

Alphabet said in its 2025 Form 10-K that it expected 2026 technical infrastructure investment to increase significantly from 2025, including servers, network equipment and data centers. It also expected infrastructure operating costs—including depreciation, energy, equipment and network capacity costs—to rise as AI offerings require more compute. This was company guidance, not a realized 2026 result.

Do not treat a customer’s capital-spending plan as a supplier’s recognized revenue, or as a software vendor’s contracted future revenue. Each number has its own scope, timing and accounting meaning; check the filing and the company’s definitions before drawing a conclusion.

Check for overlapping exposure across your holdings

Several stocks or funds can express the same underlying bet even if their names and business models differ. For example, a supplier may rely on hyperscaler orders, while a cloud provider’s investment may support AI services and an enterprise software company’s growth may depend on customer adoption. Map the dependencies among holdings rather than counting each AI-labeled position as a separate source of diversification.

  • Identify the major customers, suppliers, platforms and deployment partners behind each company’s AI-related revenue.
  • Check whether multiple holdings rely on the same hyperscaler spending plans or continued infrastructure expansion.
  • For software exposures, look for dependence on enterprise adoption, usage growth, renewal behavior and the ability to cover compute costs.
  • Use company filings to examine customer concentration and contract terms where disclosed.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you

Infrastructure and software stocks face different routes from AI demand to revenue and returns. Infrastructure companies may benefit from equipment orders or capacity usage, but spending needs, utilization, costs, customer concentration and margins matter. Software companies may benefit from paid adoption and renewals, but deployment conversion, retention, pricing, services and usage costs matter.

This business-model comparison does not establish which group is cheaper at current prices or more likely to outperform. Answering those questions requires a dated, comparable set of stock prices, forecasts and valuation measures; no portfolio allocation recommendation follows from the categories alone.
