To compare centralized crypto exchanges with on-chain perpetuals platforms, assess the specific venue and contract—not just the category label. Start with who controls collateral and how trades are matched and settled, then compare contract and oracle rules, total costs over your intended holding period, executable liquidity, available tools, and eligibility where you live. Neither architecture alone establishes that a platform is safer, cheaper, more liquid, or suitable for you.
A perpetual contract has no expiry date, but holding one can still cost money: funding payments pass between long and short position holders, with who pays depending on the funding rate’s sign. Contract terms, funding schedules, and access differ by venue and market. The practical question is not which category wins in general, but which specific product’s risks, costs, and rules you understand.
Start by comparing the actual control and custody arrangements
“Centralized” and “on-chain” describe broad operating models, not a complete risk assessment. Find out who controls your collateral, how orders are matched, how positions are settled, and what happens if part of the system fails.
- Collateral control: Who holds or controls funds between deposit and withdrawal? Is collateral kept in a venue account, or do you interact with a protocol using your own wallet?
- Trading and settlement: Which steps happen on-chain, and which depend on a venue operator, validators, or other infrastructure?
- Protocol powers: Who can pause markets, upgrade software, or change parameters? What safeguards or limits apply?
- Failure scenarios: What do the terms say about outages, delayed withdrawals, liquidation events, exploits, or insolvency?
Kraken Learn’s June 19, 2026 comparison describes Kraken as custodial and dYdX as a validator-run on-chain protocol with wallet-based funds. That is a description of those products by a venue-authored comparison, not proof that every centralized venue or on-chain protocol works the same way, nor a blanket assurance about either product’s risk.

Check the exact contract and its oracle rules
Two products labeled “perpetual” can expose you to different collateral, pricing, margin, and liquidation rules. Read the specifications for the precise market you intend to trade, rather than relying on a venue’s general product description.
- Settlement and collateral: Identify the currency in which the contract settles and the asset used as collateral. Consider how collateral conversion or a change in its value could affect your position.
- Index or oracle: Find out what price inputs are used to value the contract and how the venue handles missing or disrupted inputs.
- Margin and leverage: Compare initial and maintenance margin, margin mode, leverage limits, and the liquidation process. A stated maximum leverage is a limit, not a recommendation or a guarantee that a position can safely use it.
- Availability and operating terms: Check trading hours, maintenance arrangements, and whether the contract can be restricted or changed under the terms.
For example, Coinbase International Exchange’s product specifications list linear, USDC-settled perpetual products with no expiry and index pricing, while margin and leverage are specified by contract. One product page lists a maximum of 50x; a separate default initial-margin figure can imply much lower starting leverage. Those figures describe different aspects of a particular contract and should not be treated as interchangeable or generalized to other markets.

Hyperliquid’s contract specifications say oracle denomination follows the primary liquidity source for the spot asset. The documentation identifies PURR-USD and HYPE-USD as current USDC-denominated perpetual exceptions, using Hyperliquid spot as the most liquid spot oracle source. This is protocol documentation accessed October 7, 2026, not a timeless rule for every market; check the live specifications for the instrument.
Estimate total cost for your position and holding period
A headline trading fee is only one part of cost. Estimate charges for a realistic order size and the time you expect to hold it, and use the fee tier that actually applies to your account.

- Trading fees: Estimate maker or taker charges for entering, adjusting, and closing the position. Confirm whether your expected order is likely to qualify for the fee type you use in the estimate.
- Funding: Estimate payments at each applicable interval over the planned holding period. Funding can be paid or received, and its rate can change; a current snapshot is not a guaranteed future rate.
- Liquidation-related charges: Check whether a liquidation incurs fees or other costs and how the liquidation mechanism works.
- Movement and conversion: Include deposit, withdrawal, conversion, and network costs only when they apply to your route and assets.
Binance Futures explains that funding payments transfer between holders of long and short positions in perpetual contracts; Binance does not charge a separate funding-payment fee. Its documentation describes an ordinary default interval while allowing contract-specific variation and changes in volatile conditions. If account funds are insufficient, funding may be deducted from position margin and can affect the liquidation price. Binance’s schedule-adjustment rules include changes effective in 2025 and 2026, so check the live contract page rather than assuming a particular interval or rate.
Compare liquidity at the size you intend to trade
Volume alone does not tell you the price at which you can execute. Compare the same contract, or a genuinely close equivalent, over the same observation period and at a representative order size.

A Bank for International Settlements working paper published November 19, 2024, found that liquidity provision in the decentralized exchanges it studied was concentrated among a small group of sophisticated participants. That is context about the studied markets, not a current market-wide statistic or a direct ranking of centralized exchanges against on-chain perpetuals platforms.

Kraken Learn’s venue-authored comparison, published June 19, 2026, stated that Kraken offered 300+ crypto perpetual markets and dYdX offered 180+ at that time. These are dated vendor claims, not independent or current market counts. Verify listings and product terms with the venues before relying on them.
Verify eligibility and rules for your location
Access and applicable protections can depend on your country, the venue’s legal entity, and the specific derivative product. Before opening an account or transferring funds, check the venue’s current country list and product terms, identify which legal entity would serve you, and consult relevant local regulator information. Do not infer availability or legal status from a platform’s global branding or from access in another country.
Use this checklist to make a like-for-like comparison
- Choose the exact market: Record the contract, settlement asset, collateral, and intended position size.
- Map control and failure handling: Note who controls funds, which components are on-chain, who can change or pause the system, and what the terms say about outages, liquidation, exploits, and insolvency.
- Read the contract specifications: Write down oracle or index inputs, margin requirements, leverage limits, liquidation rules, trading hours, and maintenance terms.
- Calculate a holding-period cost: Add applicable trading fees, estimated funding over the planned intervals, liquidation-related charges, and relevant funding, withdrawal, conversion, or network costs.
- Check execution for your size: Compare spread, depth, and likely slippage for the same market and observation period; consider behavior in fast markets.
- Confirm product fit and eligibility: Verify needed tools and support, current listings, local access, legal entity, and applicable terms.
Record the source and date for volatile terms such as fees, funding, leverage, oracle inputs, listings, and eligibility. Recheck them before trading: the product-specific rules can matter more to your decision than whether the venue is described as centralized or on-chain.
