A GIFT City account may involve an IFSC-regulated provider and a foreign-currency account arrangement; an Indian broker’s international service may open or connect you to an account with an overseas broker. In either case, resident individuals’ eligible remittances fall under the same RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) limit: up to USD 250,000 per financial year. The right comparison is between the specific provider’s legal entity, account terms, markets, costs and custody—not the labels “GIFT City” and “global account.”
What is the practical difference?
“GIFT City investing” refers to investing through a provider operating in India’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in GIFT City. IFSCA rules permit a person resident in India to open and maintain a freely convertible foreign-currency account with an IFSC Banking Unit for transactions connected with permissible LRS transactions. The permission establishes a possible account arrangement; it does not establish that every GIFT City investment service uses the same legal entity, account structure or custody model.
An Indian broker’s international-investing service can instead route the customer to a separate overseas broker. For example, ICICI Direct says its Global Investment account is opened with Interactive Brokers LLC, which it identifies as the executing and clearing broker and global custodian. That is a provider-specific arrangement, not a description of every Indian broker’s service.
So, first identify the entity with which you contract and where the account and securities are held. Then compare access, funding, charges and the protections and obligations set out in the actual terms.

How do the two routes compare?
| What to compare | GIFT City / IFSC provider route | Indian broker international account route |
|---|---|---|
| Account and regulatory structure | IFSCA rules permit resident individuals to maintain foreign-currency accounts with IFSC Banking Units for permissible LRS transactions. The provider’s legal entity, authorisation, account arrangement and client rights depend on its terms. | The Indian broker may connect you to an overseas broker. ICICI Direct says its Global Investment account is with Interactive Brokers LLC, its executing and clearing broker and global custodian; verify the structure for the service you are considering. |
| Example market access | INDmoney’s cited service page advertises US stocks and global ETFs. Other markets and instruments depend on the provider. | ICICI Direct’s FAQ lists the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. The listed markets do not establish that every security or order type is available. |
| Funding limit | Resident-individual remittances remain subject to the RBI LRS framework. An IFSC account does not create another annual allowance. | The same LRS framework applies to eligible remittances. The broker’s workflow and any bank charges depend on the provider and bank. |
| Advertised pricing example | INDmoney advertises brokerage of 0.25% subject to a cap and no annual maintenance or account fee. These are provider-stated terms; check the current tariff. | ICICI Direct publishes transaction-charge details. A complete like-for-like all-in cost is not stated in the cited material; check its current schedule and any partner, FX and funding costs. |
| Eligibility example | Current onboarding criteria and service availability depend on the named provider; confirm them directly. | ICICI Direct says residents, NRIs and certain corporates can use its facility subject to stated conditions. Confirm eligibility for your circumstances. |
| Tax, custody and protection | Account location alone does not settle tax treatment or the protections that apply. Review the account documents and relevant current rules. | The same caution applies. Confirm the overseas broker relationship, custody terms and applicable protections in the current agreement. |
The examples are not endorsements or a complete survey of providers. Their advertised markets, eligibility and charges are not proof that another IFSC provider or broker offers the same terms.
Does GIFT City give you a separate LRS limit?
No. The Reserve Bank of India states that a resident individual may remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year under LRS. The RBI’s description says the ceiling also subsumes specified current-account remittances, alongside permitted capital-account uses. It is a shared annual limit, not a fresh allowance for each account, broker or route. Keep track of relevant remittances across providers and confirm how a proposed transfer is treated under current RBI rules.

IFSCA’s 5 July 2021 notification permits resident individuals to maintain a freely convertible foreign-currency account with an IFSC Banking Unit for transactions connected with permissible LRS transactions. IFSCA’s legal index also lists a 23 June 2025 amendment to directions on Banking Units’ operation of these accounts. For operational details, consult the current direction and the provider’s account documents rather than relying on the 2021 permission alone.
What will you be able to invest in?
Market coverage is service-specific. In the cited examples, INDmoney describes US stocks and global ETFs, while ICICI Direct’s FAQ lists securities in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. Neither example establishes access to every exchange, instrument or trading feature in those markets.

Before opening an account, check the provider’s current instrument list and whether it supports the securities and order types you intend to use. A market appearing in a provider’s list does not, by itself, confirm that a particular security is eligible or that the service offers every order feature.
How should you compare the real cost?
Do not treat a headline brokerage rate or a zero account fee as the total cost of investing. Build the comparison around the transactions you expect to make, and use each provider’s current tariff and your bank’s applicable charges.
Rank #4
- Brokerage: Check the rate, how it is calculated, any minimum and the conditions or cap. INDmoney advertises 0.25% brokerage subject to a ceiling; confirm the live terms before relying on that figure.
- Currency conversion: Ask how the exchange rate is set and whether an FX spread or conversion fee applies.
- Funding and remittance: Include bank charges and any provider charges for sending funds. The process and cost depend on the bank and service.
- Holding and moving money: Check for custody or other holding charges, withdrawal costs and charges for transferring securities or cash, where applicable.
- Other transaction charges: Include applicable exchange, regulatory, clearing or partner charges shown in the current schedule.
Compare the same hypothetical deposit, trades, holding period and withdrawal for both services. If a charge or its basis is unclear, ask the provider for the complete schedule instead of assuming it is included in the advertised brokerage.

Before funding the account, read the agreement and establish which entity is responsible at each stage. The provider’s brand name alone does not tell you who holds the account or what happens if an intermediary fails.

- Identify the contracting entity, its regulator and the authorisation relevant to the service. For an IFSC provider, verify the current authorisation in the IFSCA directory; for an overseas partner, identify that entity in the account documents.
- Find out who holds the cash and securities, how your beneficial ownership is recorded, and whether a separate custodian or clearing broker is involved.
- Read what the agreement says about custody, segregation, insolvency and the process for making a complaint or seeking a remedy. Do not infer the applicable protection from a provider’s regulated status alone.
- Check who can access the account, what residency and identity conditions apply, and whether the service is currently available to you.
What about Indian and foreign taxes?
The account route alone does not establish whether a particular investment receives more favourable tax treatment, is simpler to report, or avoids foreign obligations. The available provider and regulatory details do not settle a complete route-by-route tax comparison, including the treatment of specific investments or any foreign reporting requirements.
Before investing, confirm the current Indian tax and reporting rules that apply to your residency and holdings, and check whether the relevant foreign jurisdiction creates additional obligations. Use current official guidance and, where needed, advice from a qualified tax professional; do not rely on marketing descriptions or account location as a substitute.
Which route should you choose?
Choose by matching the service’s documented structure and costs to your needs, rather than assuming either route is categorically cheaper, safer or more tax-efficient. Use this checklist for each account you are considering:
Quick Recap
- Eligibility: Confirm that the service accepts your residency and circumstances.
- Funding: Map the bank remittance process, its charges and how the transfer fits within your LRS usage.
- Account and regulator: Record the contracting entity, relevant regulator and any overseas broker or banking unit involved.
- Ownership and custody: Establish how your assets are held and what the agreement says about custody, failure and remedies.
- Access: Check the actual exchanges, eligible securities and order features you need.
- Total cost: Compare brokerage, FX, bank and remittance, holding, withdrawal and other applicable charges using the same investing scenario.
- Tax and reporting: Verify current obligations for your residency and the investments you plan to hold.
