Compare the amount the recipient is expected to receive—not just the advertised transfer fee. Enter the same amount, currencies, funding method and payout method for each provider, then compare the quoted exchange rates, all stated charges, delivery time and any possible deductions by intermediary or recipient banks. Quotes change with the route, payment method, amount and timing, so compare offers close together and confirm the terms before sending.
Compare the full cost, not just the transfer fee
A zero-fee offer is not necessarily the cheapest. A provider may build a margin into its exchange rate, so an apparently low transfer fee can still leave the recipient with less. Compare the provider’s rate and explicit fees together, using the recipient’s expected payout as the practical result.
For a simple comparison, note how much you pay in the sending currency and how much the recipient is expected to receive in the destination currency. If the same send amount produces a smaller payout with one provider, examine its rate, charges and payout terms to understand why.
Keep the comparison inputs identical
Prices are specific to a transfer’s details. For each provider, use the same:

- Destination country and receiving currency.
- Funding method, such as bank transfer or card.
- Payout method, such as bank deposit or cash pickup, where available.
- Delivery speed, if the provider offers different timing options.
Changing any of these can change the price or the options available. World Bank corridor data and provider pricing information both show that costs vary by method and transfer details; there is no universal provider ranking that applies to every route.
Read the exchange rate against a reference
Record the exchange rate each provider quotes and when that quote was shown. To understand the conversion cost, compare the offered rate with a reference rate—such as the mid-market rate—at roughly the same time. The difference can indicate an exchange-rate margin, but it is not a complete cost calculation: add explicit fees and account for any deductions that may affect the payout.

For example, a provider may advertise no transfer fee but offer a less favorable rate than another provider that charges an explicit fee. The relevant question is which option delivers more to the recipient for the same sender outlay and transfer details, not which one has the smaller fee line.
Check which charges may reduce the payout
Review the quote for the provider’s transfer fee and any funding-method charge. Also look for possible intermediary, correspondent or receiving-bank deductions. A provider may show an expected recipient amount without being able to guarantee that every third-party deduction is included. If a deduction is not disclosed or its amount is uncertain, do not treat the displayed payout as a guaranteed final amount.

Rules depend on where the transfer is sent, the provider and the transaction type. In the United States, CFPB materials on the Regulation E remittance-transfer disclosure framework describe pre-payment disclosures for covered transfers that include the exchange rate and amount expected to reach the recipient; specified third-party fees and taxes may not be included in that amount (CFPB remittance-transfer rule). In the United Kingdom, the FCA’s Consumer Duty guidance highlights transparency about overall cost, exchange-rate markups and possible intermediary or recipient-bank charges (FCA guidance). These are jurisdiction-specific sources, not a universal description of the rules for every transfer.
Use a worksheet to compare actual quotes
| Record for each provider | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Send amount, source currency and destination country and currency | Establishes the same transfer for each quote. |
| Funding method and any related charge | Payment choice can affect both availability and cost. |
| Quoted exchange rate and quote time or expiry | Rates move, and offers may be time-limited. |
| Explicit transfer fee | Shows the stated provider charge, but not necessarily the whole cost. |
| Expected recipient amount and payout method | Shows the projected result for the person receiving the money. |
| Possible intermediary or receiving-bank deductions | Identifies costs that may sit outside the displayed amount. |
| Estimated arrival time and any speed-related price change | Helps compare offers that do not deliver at the same speed. |
| Rate-lock or quote-validity terms | Clarifies whether the quoted rate is still available when you send. |
Compare total cost on a consistent basis: distinguish charges paid by you from deductions that may reduce the recipient’s payout. Where the provider does not disclose a third-party deduction or guarantee a quote, mark that uncertainty rather than calculating a falsely precise final amount.
Compare speed, methods and quote certainty too
The cheapest quote may not meet your needs if its payout method is unavailable to the recipient or its delivery time is too slow. Compare these factors alongside cost:
- Total cost and expected payout: account for the rate, explicit charges and possible receiving-side deductions.
- Delivery time: check whether faster delivery changes the price or available rate.
- Funding and payout methods: confirm that both methods work for the sender and recipient on the chosen route.
- Quote certainty: check whether the exchange rate is locked, how long the quote remains valid and what happens if you pay later.
Provider comparison pages can be useful for identifying quote fields: for example, Wise displays exchange rate, total fees and recipient amount in its comparison interface (Wise comparison page). Those fields are an illustration, not evidence that any one provider is cheapest or suitable for every corridor. Use the actual quote for your own transfer.

Use World Bank figures as benchmarks, not quotes
The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide homepage displayed a global average remittance cost of 6.36 percent and listed August 18, 2025 as its last update (World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide). That figure is a broad dataset benchmark, not a prediction of what a particular customer will pay. The World Bank data catalog says the dataset covers 377 country corridors from 48 sending countries to 111 receiving countries, with data for 2011–2025; its metadata was updated September 28, 2026 (World Bank Data Catalog). The catalog also says non-transparent services are excluded when calculating the global average total cost.
Period-specific findings should be read just as carefully. In its Q3 2025 report, the World Bank reported that card funding was the cheapest funding method at 4.39 percent in that period’s recorded sample, while sending to a bank account averaged 7.86 percent (World Bank Q3 2025 report). Those are aggregate findings for that report period and sample, not a current quote or a rule that cards are always cheapest.
The World Bank also states that “Cutting prices by at least 5 percentage points can save up to $16 billion a year” (World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide). This is a broad published estimate, not a promise of savings on an individual transfer. An older World Bank-hosted standards document says migrants should be able to see the aggregated transaction cost, including fees, exchange-rate margins and other costs that could be charged in the sending or receiving country (World Bank remittance pricing standards document); it is a standards-oriented statement, not a current legal rule everywhere.
Make the decision with current quotes
- Enter the same amount, currency pair, funding method, payout method and speed with each provider.
- Record the quoted exchange rate, explicit fee, expected recipient amount, arrival estimate and quote expiry.
- Check for possible intermediary, correspondent or receiving-bank deductions and note anything the provider leaves uncertain.
- Compare the resulting payout and total cost, then weigh delivery time, available methods and quote certainty against your needs.
- Before paying, confirm the quote is still valid and review the final transfer details.
Exchange rates move, and provider prices can change with the route, amount, payment choice and timing. A quote is therefore a snapshot: offers compared at different times may not be directly comparable.
