To set up UPI, register in a participating UPI app with the mobile number linked to your bank account, link the account the app finds, and create a UPI PIN. Keep that PIN private. If a payment stalls or fails, check its status in the app before paying again, save the transaction reference, and report the specific transaction through the app or your bank.
How do I set up UPI?
- Choose a participating UPI app. Consider whether it supports your bank, is accessible and available in a language you prefer, and offers transaction history and complaint tools you can use. No single app is established here as safest or best.
- Register with the mobile number linked to your bank account. The number verified in the app must match the number registered with the bank for the app to fetch the account. This is a key account-discovery check, according to NPCI’s UPI FAQs.
- Select the bank account and create a UPI PIN in the app. A UPI PIN is distinct from a bank MPIN. NPCI’s FAQ describes creating or resetting a PIN using debit-card details, though the flow can vary by bank and app.
- Review the account and PIN setup before transacting. Make sure you selected the intended account and can access the app’s transaction history and help options.
Why is my bank account not showing in the UPI app?
First check that the SIM and mobile number verified in the app correspond to the number your bank has on file. If they differ, the account may not be fetched. Confirm the registered number with your bank and correct the mismatch using the bank’s process; then retry account discovery in the app. NPCI describes matching the app-verified number to the bank-linked number as a requirement for fetching the account.
How do I use UPI safely?
- Keep your UPI PIN secret. NPCI’s UPI FAQ says, “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone,” and says your bank’s customer support will never ask for it. Do not disclose it to a caller, message sender, or anyone claiming to help.
- Enter the PIN only to authorize a payment you intend to make. A PIN authorizes a transaction; it is not needed simply to receive money. Stop if a request to receive funds asks you to enter your PIN.
- Check the recipient and amount before confirming. A completed transfer to the wrong recipient is not the same as a failed payment that should be reversed. NPCI says a completed transaction cannot be stopped with a stop-payment request; BHIM says NPCI cannot reverse a successful transfer merely because the sender entered the wrong details. Contact your bank promptly and ask the recipient to return the money where appropriate.
- If your phone is lost, contact your bank and block the mobile number or SIM. Follow your bank’s and mobile carrier’s process; NPCI advises blocking the number and contacting bank support.
UPI payment pending—should I pay again?
Do not immediately repeat a payment while the first transaction is unresolved. Open the app’s transaction history and check the current status and reference. A pending payment can reflect a delay at the beneficiary bank. NPCI’s UPI FAQ describes a 48-hour window for a pending amount to reach the beneficiary after the beneficiary bank completes daily settlements; that is NPCI FAQ guidance, not a universal guarantee for every bank, app, or transaction. Wait for the status to update and contact the app or bank if it remains unclear.
UPI failed but amount debited—how do I get a refund?
Open the transaction details and record the transaction or reference ID, amount, date and time, and recipient details. Report the failed transaction using the app’s help or complaint option, then contact your bank if the app status is unclear or the reversal has not appeared.
Published timing guidance is not uniform: NPCI’s FAQ says declined transactions should reverse in real time and advises contacting the bank if a refund does not happen immediately; it also says to contact the bank if an expected refund has not arrived within an hour. BHIM’s FAQ gives a T+3-days expectation for the failed-transaction flow it describes. These statements apply to their respective guidance and should not be combined into a single refund deadline. The transaction category and current bank or app handling matter.
The app says successful, but the recipient says they were not paid
Check the recipient details and transaction reference in your history. Do not pay a second time until you have checked the status with the app or bank. BHIM’s FAQ advises checking the details entered and contacting support or raising a complaint in the app. Keep the reference ID available so support can trace the payment.

Wrong recipient or suspected UPI fraud
Contact your bank promptly, especially if you suspect fraud. NPCI’s UPI Help guidelines direct suspected fraudulent-transaction complaints to the bank. An ordinary failed-payment complaint is not a way to reverse a transfer you authorized and that completed successfully. For a mistaken successful transfer, promptly ask the bank what assistance is available and contact the recipient for a refund; do not assume the payment can be stopped.

- Open the transaction in the app’s history. Use its report, help, or complaint option if available. BHIM says declined transactions can be reported from transaction details; NPCI’s UPI Help guidelines show a complaint flow for an eligible failed merchant payment.
- Provide the transaction reference and relevant details. Include the amount, date and time, status shown, recipient or merchant information, and a concise description of what happened.
- Keep the complaint reference and track it. Follow up through the app or bank, and contact the bank if the app cannot resolve the issue or the status remains unclear.
- Ask the bank which turnaround rule applies if the issue remains unresolved. RBI’s framework covers turnaround and applicable compensation by transaction category; it does not support one universal deadline for every UPI problem. Applicable compensation is credited automatically under the framework, but the relevant category and current rule determine what applies.
For the official guidance, see NPCI’s UPI FAQs, NPCI’s UPI Help Guidelines (July 2023), NPCI’s BHIM product page, BHIM’s FAQs, and the RBI’s failed-transaction turnaround framework and framework publication.
