Public blockchain adoption can make crypto transfers easier to track and verify, but it does not create one standard fee, privacy level, or delivery time. Your experience depends on two separate systems: the exchange’s rules for withdrawals and the blockchain network that processes the transaction. Check the exact asset, network, fee quote, and destination compatibility before sending.
Why exchange withdrawals have more than one fee
An exchange may charge its own withdrawal fee, while the blockchain charges a network fee to process the transaction. Those charges are distinct: a platform can waive its service fee and still pass along a network fee. Network fees can vary with congestion and transaction complexity, and an exchange’s estimate or supported routes can change.
For example, Public’s transfer FAQ says the platform does not charge a crypto transfer fee, but withdrawals incur a network fee. It describes a $0.53 KYT fee incorporated into that network fee, attributed to Public/ZeroHash; the FAQ was accessed October 7, 2026, and does not display an exact update date. That is a provider-specific disclosure, not a typical or market-wide crypto withdrawal charge. See Public’s current transfer FAQ and confirm the quote in the withdrawal flow before sending.
Why did my crypto withdrawal fee change?
The network fee may move as congestion or transaction requirements change. The exchange may also update its own fee policy, estimates, or supported networks. A Bitcoin-family wallet provider, for instance, explains that fees can be dynamic and that higher fees may receive priority; that provider-specific explanation is dated February 7, 2023, and is not current fee guidance for every network or exchange. Check the live withdrawal quote rather than relying on an earlier transfer or a fee shown elsewhere.

How to compare a transfer route before sending
There is no universally cheapest or fastest exchange-supported route established by these sources. Compare the route offered for your exact asset and account at the time you transfer:
- Charges: distinguish the exchange’s withdrawal charge from the network fee, and check whether any additional disclosed charge is included.
- Variability: see whether the quote can change with congestion or transaction complexity.
- Compatibility: verify that both the exchange and destination support the same asset on the same network. Support may depend on asset and location.
- Timing: distinguish expected block inclusion and confirmations or finality from the exchange’s processing and release of funds.
- Exposure: consider what transaction details and network metadata may be public or linkable.
Network compatibility matters: Public’s FAQ says it supports Ethereum mainnet but not other ETH networks, and warns that assets sent using unsupported Ethereum networks will not be successfully received. It also says New York members cannot transfer crypto in or out under the conditions represented by that page. These are Public-specific details, not universal exchange rules; check the current rules for your account, asset, and destination.

Can people see my crypto transactions on a public blockchain?
Usually, the transaction record is public, but the address is not automatically a person’s name. Ethereum describes standard transactions as pseudonymous: public keys and activity are visible, and persistent address-to-address patterns can reveal relationships. Bitcoin Core likewise notes that every confirmed Bitcoin transaction is published and visible; privacy depends partly on whether a public key can be linked to a real identity. See Ethereum’s explanation of privacy and Bitcoin Core’s privacy overview.
An exchange account and an onchain address are separate information layers, but they may be linked. If an exchange knows your identity and associates an address with your account, that association can make activity on the public ledger easier to connect to you. Address pseudonymity is therefore not the same as anonymity, and a public ledger can remain analyzable even when a transaction does not display a legal name.

What privacy features do—and do not—change
Ethereum’s ecosystem includes tools such as stealth addresses and privacy pools for some transfers. They require specific applications, wallets, or layer-2 networks, and do not conceal every kind of activity: the Ethereum privacy page says complex smart-contract interactions such as decentralized exchange trading are not hidden by these tools. Their design and compliance considerations also matter.
Ethereum’s privacy roadmap describes private reads, private writes, and private proving as ongoing priorities, not as a set of universally deployed features. The roadmap also identifies risks such as information exposed through remote procedure call (RPC) providers. A wallet or application can affect what information is exposed, but no tool should be treated as an end-to-end privacy guarantee.

A withdrawal does not have one timing event. The transaction may be submitted, included in a block, receive additional confirmations or reach protocol finality, and then meet the exchange’s own processing and release requirements. A transaction being included in a block does not necessarily mean it is final or spendable, and protocol timing is not an exchange’s promise about withdrawal completion.

Ethereum’s proof-of-stake network uses 12-second slots; its historical proof-of-work block target was about 13.3 seconds. Ethereum.org says the Merge did not significantly change capacity or throughput, and was not intended to lower gas fees. Its documentation describes epochs of 6.4 minutes, with finalization typically requiring the next epoch. These are protocol intervals, not withdrawal service-level guarantees. See Ethereum’s Merge explainer.
As rough network-level comparisons, Ethereum.org describes six Bitcoin confirmations as taking about 60 minutes and Ethereum finality as about 15 minutes. These are explanatory approximations, not forecasts for a particular transaction or exchange. Congestion, the exchange’s confirmation threshold, internal processing, and asset-specific rules can all affect when a withdrawal completes. The comparison is described at Ethereum.org’s Bitcoin and Ethereum overview.
Do rollups make transactions private?
No. Scaling and privacy are separate properties. Ethereum zero-knowledge rollups publish transaction data on Ethereum so others can reconstruct state and verify the system. Compression and blob data can lower user costs; blobs have a separate fee market and are usually cheaper than calldata. Publishing data supports independent, permissionless verification, but does not itself conceal transaction activity.
Validity proofs can show that state transitions are correct, and some proof systems can provide zero knowledge. Using validity proofs to scale a network does not, by itself, make a user’s transactions confidential. See Ethereum’s ZK-rollup documentation.

Before you confirm a withdrawal
- Open the exchange’s withdrawal flow and select the exact asset and network. Read the live fee quote and any separate fee explanation.
- Check the destination’s network support and confirm that the deposit address is for that same network. Do not assume two networks are interchangeable because they use the same asset name.
- Review account and location restrictions shown by the exchange, along with any minimums, processing notes, or confirmation requirements.
- Plan for separate timing stages: exchange processing, block inclusion, confirmations or finality, and the point when the receiving service treats funds as available.
- Consider public exposure: assume onchain transaction data may be visible and potentially linkable, even if an address does not show your name.
