These checks help you understand where losses could come from; they cannot make a lending vault risk-free.
Start by identifying the exact vault and its dependencies
A vault’s risk is not limited to the code behind its main contract. Its assets, pricing sources, liquidation processes, managers, and the network it runs on can all affect whether deposits can be valued and withdrawn. Aave’s risk documentation, for example, identifies protocol and reserve-token vulnerabilities, third-party oracle failures, collateral value and liquidity, and network or bridge risks as distinct exposures. Those categories are useful for due diligence, but Aave-specific controls should not be assumed to apply to another vault.
- Record the protocol, network, market, and vault or strategy contract address.
- Identify the collateral and debt assets, any external manager, and whether funds depend on a bridge, redemption mechanism, or other protocol.
- Verify addresses and the current deployment or version using the protocol’s official documentation and live chain data.
A product page or front-end label is not enough to establish which contracts actually hold or manage funds. Aave’s overview treats network and bridge exposure separately from smart-contract and oracle risk, underscoring why these dependencies belong in the same inventory. Aave risk documentation
Review the deployed code, security evidence, and administrative powers
An audit or formal verification report is evidence that specified code was reviewed under a defined scope; it is not a guarantee that the live vault is safe. Match each report to the relevant deployed version and contracts, then inspect its scope, exclusions, findings, severity, fixes, and any follow-up review. A report on a related product or an earlier implementation may not cover the code currently in use.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Also find out how the deployment can change or be paused. Look for proxy or upgrade patterns, who holds admin and risk roles, whether those powers are constrained by a timelock, how governance approves changes, and what emergency procedures exist. Ask who can change oracle addresses, asset listings, risk parameters, or implementation code, and how users are informed. A DAO label by itself does not tell you who can act or how quickly.
Aave’s security page lists reports from providers including Certora, ChainSecurity, and Josselin Feist, with dates and report titles. Treat such listings as starting points: inspect the actual reports and confirm that their scope covers the relevant version and deployment. Aave also describes code review and security practices in its risk materials, while acknowledging that software and oracle risks remain. These are protocol statements, not independent proof of safety. Aave security reports Aave risk documentation

Trace how every collateral and debt asset is priced
For each asset that can be supplied, borrowed, or used as collateral, identify the oracle contract and feed. Determine what markets or data sources underpin the price, how often updates occur or what triggers them, how stale or invalid values are handled, and whether the protocol uses fallback or correlated-asset logic. Do not assume that a feed provider’s name alone establishes how a vault consumes its prices.
Then ask what happens when an update is delayed, an answer is invalid, a provider is unavailable, the chain is congested, or an L2 sequencer is down. Aave’s documentation describes governance selection of reserve oracles and identifies Chainlink Price Feeds and CAPO as oracle contract types used in production markets; that is an example of what to investigate, not evidence that every Aave market or other vault uses the same setup. Chainlink’s feed-selection guidance emphasizes healthy market liquidity for the asset and designing for volatile conditions, degraded infrastructure, reduced price discovery, and upstream outages. It also places responsibility for using feeds on the application developer. Treat this as provider guidance and check whether the vault’s implementation actually follows an appropriate design for its assets and markets. Chainlink data-feed selection guidance
Understand what oracle protections do during an outage
A safeguard that blocks an action can reduce one danger while changing another. Aave’s V3 PriceOracleSentinel documentation describes a mechanism intended for L2 sequencer downtime: it can block borrowing when the oracle is down and condition borrowing or liquidation on oracle health and the end of a grace period. The precise deployment and parameters must be checked individually. A delay can give markets time to recover, but it can also affect when liquidations are allowed, so assess the configured behavior rather than treating any pause as an unqualified benefit. Oracle design also involves trade-offs beyond outages. A 2024 paper on SecPLF models flash-loan-driven oracle manipulation and proposes constraining oracle use based on recent stored prices. It discusses how constrained prices may diverge from market prices and create arbitrage opportunities. This is a research proposal and modeled trade-off, not a universal industry standard or demonstrated protection for every deployed vault. SecPLF paper
Chainlink’s SVR documentation describes recapturing oracle extractable value associated with price updates and lending liquidations. It is about liquidation-related value capture, not a general cure for oracle risk or a direct guarantee for vault users; protocol developers remain responsible for risk parameters and feed performance. Check collateral quality, liquidation settings, and exposure limits
Compare the collateral’s volatility, concentration, external market liquidity, and reliance on redemption or bridge mechanisms with the vault’s borrowing and liquidation settings. A token can have a price feed yet still be difficult to sell at the quoted price, especially during stress. If collateral value falls quickly or liquidity disappears, liquidations may fail to recover enough to cover debt.
Review the configured loan-to-value ratio (LTV), liquidation threshold, supply and borrow caps, liquidation incentives, and any close-factor limits. These settings can constrain exposure or shape how liquidations work, but they cannot ensure that collateral will always be sold at its oracle value. Aave says its risk service providers monitor collateral performance and market stability and that governance can adjust LTV and liquidation thresholds; its V3 risk framework describes supply and borrow caps and a variable liquidation close factor. Treat these as examples and inspect the settings for the specific market you use. Aave risk documentation Aave V3 risk framework
Compare vaults on evidence, not a universal safety score
If you are choosing between vaults, compare the same categories for each one. The available evidence does not support a universal numeric score or a blanket claim that one protocol is safest overall.
| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Deployment and permissions | Which contracts are live, can they be upgraded or paused, and who holds the relevant roles? |
| Security reviews | Do reports cover the live version and integrations? What was excluded, and were findings remediated? |
| Oracle path | What data source and update design are used, how is staleness handled, and what happens during failure? |
| Collateral and liquidity | How concentrated or volatile is the collateral, and can it be sold or redeemed under stress? |
| Risk and liquidation parameters | What are the LTV, liquidation thresholds, caps, incentives, and operational limits? |
| Chain and bridge dependencies | Does the vault rely on an L2 sequencer, bridges, or other network components, and what is the recovery behavior? |
| Governance and communication | Who can change critical settings, how quickly can changes take effect, and how are incidents communicated? |
Where an answer is unavailable, treat that as uncertainty rather than evidence that the control is absent—or that it is safe. Aave’s risk and oracle documentation and Chainlink’s feed guidance support these diligence dimensions, but they do not establish the configuration of an unidentified vault. Keep the conclusion proportional to the evidence
Aave’s own risk page states: “The Aave Protocol offers decentralised access to liquidity but is not without risks.” The same principle applies to due diligence generally: a current deployment, relevant security reviews, understandable permissions, robust oracle behavior, liquid collateral, and credible liquidation operations can improve your understanding of a vault, but none of them proves that losses cannot occur.
