Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by measuring what you own across your entire portfolio—not by counting funds. Several ETFs can hold the same mega-cap companies, so adding another fund may do little to reduce your exposure. Once you know which companies, sectors, countries, or asset classes dominate, you can choose a broadening approach that fits your time horizon and tolerance for risk.
Why a portfolio with many stocks can still be concentrated
Market-cap-weighted indexes assign larger weights to companies with larger market values. That means a fund can own hundreds of companies while still placing a substantial share in a handful of the largest. The S&P 500, for example, covers about 80% of available U.S. market capitalization, but its 10 largest constituents accounted for 37.8% of the index and its largest constituent for 8.1% as of August 31, 2026, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. The index had 503 constituents at that date; the number of companies alone does not tell you how evenly exposure is spread.
Fund names are not a reliable measure of diversification, either. A U.S. stock fund, a technology fund, and a growth fund may all own some of the same large companies. The SEC recommends checking funds’ top holdings because multiple funds can overlap. It also cautions that a mutual fund or ETF does not necessarily provide diversification, particularly when it is narrowly focused. See the SEC’s Asset Allocation and Diversification guidance.
Measure concentration across your whole portfolio
Review holdings across workplace retirement plans, IRAs, taxable accounts, and any employer shares you own. Where possible, look through funds to their underlying holdings. Estimate how much of the total portfolio is tied to each major company, then examine sector, country, and asset-class weights. The purpose is to identify the exposure you actually want to reduce—not simply to increase the number of tickers.

- Sector concentration: Are several funds adding to the same industry or sector exposure?
- Country concentration: Is the portfolio heavily tied to one national market?
- Asset-class concentration: Is nearly everything in stocks, or is there a mix that reflects your goals and ability to tolerate losses?
Your answer may be different if the concern is a large employer-stock position, a technology tilt, U.S. large-cap exposure, or an all-stock allocation. The SEC says asset allocation depends in part on your time horizon and risk tolerance; it does not prescribe one mix for everyone. Its Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing discusses diversification both within and across asset categories.
Choose what kind of diversification you need
Diversification can broaden exposure within equities or across different asset categories. These approaches address different risks and are not interchangeable.

Broaden company and sector exposure
A fund that reweights companies instead of following market-cap weights can reduce the influence of the largest companies. One example is the S&P 500 Diversified Sector Weight Index. S&P Dow Jones Indices describes a methodology that uses equal weights at multiple business-classification levels and revenue-proportional weights within each business activity, with the aim of reducing concentration risk and sector imbalances. S&P lists the Xtrackers S&P 500 Divers Sect Weight ETF (SPXD) as linked to the index. This is an example of a different index design, not a guarantee of better returns or an endorsement. Review the index methodology and current fund documents before deciding whether it suits your portfolio.
Reweighting changes which companies have greater influence; it does not remove stock-market risk. An equal-weight or other reweighted fund can behave differently from a market-cap benchmark, and its turnover, tracking difference, expenses, and tax effects may matter.

Broaden beyond U.S. large-cap stocks
Adding exposure to other countries or company sizes can address dependence on U.S. mega-caps, but a global label does not mean equal country weights or low concentration. MSCI’s September 30, 2026 factsheet reported the MSCI ACWI comparator with 2,414 constituents, a 5.11% largest-company weight, and a 23.92% top-ten weight. The same dated figures showed the United States at 58.65% and information technology at 40.84%. These are index characteristics on that date, not a timeless description or a model allocation. See the MSCI factsheet.
Consider the mix of stocks, bonds, and cash
If the underlying issue is that the portfolio is too exposed to stock-market declines overall, changing company or country weights alone may not address it. A mix of stocks, bonds, and cash can diversify across asset categories, but each choice brings its own risks, liquidity considerations, and potential effects on returns. The appropriate balance depends on personal circumstances; the cited guidance does not establish a universally correct allocation.

Compare options by their role, not just their label
Before adding or replacing a holding, compare it with what you already own. The goal is to understand the exposure it contributes and the trade-offs that come with it.
- Top holdings and weights: Compare the largest company and top-ten weights where those figures are available.
- Weighting method: Determine whether the strategy follows market-cap weights, equal weights, or another rule.
- Country and sector mix: Check whether the intended diversification is actually present.
- Company-size and asset-class breadth: Confirm whether the fund broadens beyond large companies or stocks alone.
- Costs, turnover, and taxes: Check current fund documents and consider the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
- Benchmark role and tracking: A reweighted strategy may diverge from a market-cap benchmark; decide whether that difference fits the portfolio’s purpose.
- Overlap: Look through existing funds to see whether the new holding adds a distinct exposure or mostly duplicates current positions.
Index factsheets describe indexes, not necessarily the exact holdings, costs, tax treatment, or performance of every product that tracks or references them. Verify those details in the fund’s current documents.

Set a rebalancing rule and stick to it
Even a deliberate allocation can drift as investments rise or fall at different rates. Decide in advance how you will review and, if needed, rebalance it. The SEC describes two common approaches: checking on a calendar schedule or rebalancing when an allocation crosses a preset threshold. Its guide notes that regular intervals such as six or twelve months are examples of calendar reviews and says rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently.
Rebalancing is a maintenance choice, not a reason to trade constantly. Consider transaction costs and potential taxes before changing holdings, especially in taxable accounts, and use the rule that fits your plan rather than reacting to every market move.
