To check a Bitcoin transaction, copy its transaction ID (txid) from your wallet, search for it on a Bitcoin block explorer, then review its status, confirmations, outputs, and fee. An “unconfirmed” result means the transaction has not yet been included in a block; it does not, by itself, mean the payment failed.
Find your transaction ID
Open the relevant sent or received transaction in your wallet’s history. Look for a transaction-details view or a label such as “transaction ID” or “txid.” Many wallets let you copy the ID or open the transaction in an explorer directly. A Bitcoin txid is a unique 64-character string. Blockstream’s lookup guide explains where to find it.
Look up the txid in an explorer
-
Open a public Bitcoin block explorer, such as Blockstream Explorer or mempool.space.
-
Paste the full txid into the explorer’s search field and open the matching result.

If the service supports more than one network, verify that you are viewing Bitcoin, not another network.
Blockstream says its explorer is free to use and does not require an account. Because explorer interfaces and live data can change, check that the result is for the intended network and that its transaction details make sense. Blockstream’s explanation of its explorer describes its public lookup use.
Read the transaction status and confirmations
Unconfirmed
An unconfirmed transaction has not been recorded in a block. It may be visible in an explorer’s view of a node’s mempool, where transactions wait for possible inclusion. That status alone does not prove the payment failed.

Confirmed
Once a miner includes a transaction in a block, it has one confirmation. Each subsequent block built on top of that block adds another confirmation. A confirmed transaction should show a block association and a confirmation count that increases as more blocks are added. Blockstream explains Bitcoin transaction broadcasting and block confirmations.

Blockstream describes around six confirmations as a common convention for treating a payment as final, not a guarantee or a universal rule. The level of confirmation a recipient requires can depend on their own policy and the circumstances of the payment. Blockstream’s lookup guide discusses the convention.
Check the amounts, destination, and fee
-
Outputs: Check the relevant destination address and amount. A transaction can have multiple outputs, including change sent back to the sender, so not every output is a payment to someone else.

Comparing the output with the amount and destination shown in your wallet can help you verify that you are looking at the right transaction. The explorer displays public transaction data; it is not a private account-history service. Blockstream’s transaction lookup guide describes inputs, outputs, and fee details.

What to do when a transaction is pending
Miners generally prioritize transactions with higher fee rates, but a displayed fee rate is not a promise about when a transaction will confirm. Mempools can differ across nodes, so one explorer may show pending transactions that another does not. Blockstream’s overview of how Bitcoin works describes how pending transactions can be handled.
From a node’s perspective, a pending transaction may be included in a block, displaced when a conflicting transaction that spends the same inputs confirms first, or dropped under that node’s configured policy. An explorer cannot determine which outcome will occur simply from displaying the transaction as pending.

Try another public explorer. Different nodes’ mempools may not contain exactly the same pending transactions, so a transaction can be absent from one explorer’s view.
A missing result does not identify one definitive cause. Check your wallet’s transaction details and compare current data from another explorer before drawing a conclusion. Blockstream’s Bitcoin overview explains why mempool views may differ.
The transaction disappeared from a pending view
A pending transaction may have been included in a block, replaced in the practical sense by a conflicting transaction that confirmed first, or dropped under a node’s policy. Check the wallet and current chain data to see what happened; a vanished pending listing alone does not establish which outcome occurred. Blockstream describes these possible outcomes.

An explorer reports public data but does not control whether or when miners include a transaction. Blockstream states, “Blockstream cannot speed up the confirmation of your transaction.” Any transaction-management options depend on your wallet and its capabilities; do not treat an explorer’s fee information as an action that changes the transaction. Blockstream’s explorer explanation clarifies this limit.
Protect your privacy when using an explorer
Bitcoin addresses and their associated on-chain transactions are public. Looking up or sharing an address can expose its transaction history to whoever receives it. Avoid sharing an address or transaction details if doing so could reveal activity you want to keep private. Blockstream’s explorer information and transaction lookup guide describe the public nature of this data.
