To read either, start with transaction status, then trace inputs to outputs, compare the fee with the transaction’s size, and treat mempool forecasts as changing estimates—not promises.
What a Bitcoin visualizer is showing
Bitcoin does not move coins between account rows in a central ledger. A transaction spends one or more outputs created by earlier transactions and creates new outputs. An output that has not been spent is a UTXO (unspent transaction output); a later transaction can spend it, and it can be spent only once.
A block groups transactions and links to the previous block through its header. Its Merkle root is derived from the transactions it contains. The block’s height indicates its position in a chain view, while its hash identifies that particular block. The Bitcoin Developer Guide notes that each full node independently stores a chain containing only blocks it has validated. An explorer is a convenient way to view blockchain data, not the authority that creates it.
How to read a transaction page
- Check whether it is confirmed. A confirmed transaction has been included in a block. A transaction with zero confirmations has been broadcast but is not yet included. Explorer pages and APIs may show a block association or confirmation status; labels and layouts vary by provider. See the Bitcoin Developer Guide’s payment-processing chapter and Mempool.space’s REST API documentation.
- Read the inputs. Each input refers to an earlier transaction output being spent. Multiple inputs mean the transaction is combining value from multiple earlier outputs; they do not by themselves identify a person or explain the reason for the transaction.
- Read the outputs. Each output assigns an amount in satoshis under a spending condition, often displayed with an address or script. A transaction can create several outputs—for example, one payment and change returned to the spender. Do not assume every output is a payment to a different person.
- Compare total inputs and outputs to understand the fee. For an ordinary transaction, total input value minus total output value is the transaction fee, which the miner including it can claim. The fee amount is the total paid; the fee rate relates that fee to transaction size and is commonly shown in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB). The two figures answer different questions: a larger transaction can pay a larger total fee at the same rate. Bitcoin Core exposes fee and virtual-size fields in getmempoolentry; Mempool.space provides fee and vsize in its transaction summaries.
- Recognize the coinbase transaction. The first transaction in a block is a special transaction through which the miner claims the block subsidy and fees from included transactions. It does not spend an ordinary previous transaction output.
How to read a mempool and fee visualizer
The mempool is a set of valid, unconfirmed transactions visible to a particular node. There is no single identical mempool shared by every node. An explorer may show one node’s view or aggregate data from several of its own nodes, so two providers can show different backlogs.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
For example, Blockchain.com’s mempool-size chart describes an aggregate drawn from a few of its up-to-date nodes. It defines the displayed size as the aggregate size of transactions waiting for confirmation. Its notes state a block-capacity limit of 4 million weight units (1 million virtual bytes); that is a technical limit, not a live measure of congestion or a dated adoption statistic.
A large backlog can indicate greater competition for block space. Fee-rate bands and projected blocks can help show how transactions might be selected, but they are snapshots and forecasts, not a fixed queue or exact arrival-time estimate. Mempool.space says its projections use its mempool view and a reimplementation of Bitcoin Core’s transaction-selection algorithm; its FAQ cautions that a suggested fee rate does not guarantee confirmation within a particular period.

When comparing a fee estimate or transaction display, check these details:
- Total fee versus fee rate: the amount paid and the amount per unit of transaction size are not interchangeable.
- Virtual size: fee rate is interpreted relative to transaction size; compare like with like.
- Status: distinguish confirmed transactions from unconfirmed ones.
- Actual block versus projection: a mined block records what was included; projected blocks are estimates based on a provider’s current mempool view.
- Provider and time: mempool conditions change as transactions arrive and blocks are mined. Note which explorer or node produced the display and when you viewed it.
These distinctions are reflected in the Mempool.space REST API documentation, Bitcoin Core’s mempool-entry fields, and the Mempool.space FAQ.

What confirmation counts tell you
A transaction at zero confirmations is not in a block. Inclusion gives it one confirmation; each subsequent block adds another. A higher count means the transaction is deeper in the chain and generally harder to replace, so it represents increasing confidence—not a guarantee against a chain reorganization or every kind of payment risk.
There is no universal confirmation threshold suitable for every payment. The acceptable count depends on the value at stake, the parties’ risk tolerance, and their requirements. Historical examples in documentation should not be treated as current, universal policy. The Bitcoin Developer Guide explains confirmation processing.

What an explorer can—and cannot—prove
An explorer presents data sourced from its provider, and the presentation may be delayed or aggregated. Blockchain.com allows searches for addresses, hashes, and blocks and warns that real-time data may be delayed; its mempool chart uses a few of its own nodes. Check the provider’s methodology and timestamp when a reading matters.
A transaction page can show amounts, scripts or addresses, and transaction relationships. It does not, by itself, establish who controls an address, whether a large output represents a purchase, or why funds moved. Treat labels and interpretations as separate from the underlying transaction data. Blockchain.com’s explorer is one example of a provider interface; the underlying record and the explorer’s presentation are not the same thing.
