Boston Dynamics’ current Atlas is a fully electric humanoid designed for industrial work—not the hydraulic research robot the company retired in 2024. Its published account describes a feedback-driven system: cameras and other sensors help it perceive a work area and track objects, while onboard control generates movements for tasks such as moving engine parts. Boston Dynamics publishes selected specifications and demonstrations, but not the detailed actuator designs or complete autonomy architecture.
Which Atlas does this article describe?
Boston Dynamics introduced a fully electric Atlas in April 2024 and retired its hydraulic predecessor. The earlier robot remains part of the development story, but its hardware should not be treated as a description of the current industrial product. Boston Dynamics says experience with the hydraulic research generation informed later work on control, balance and whole-body motion.
The company now positions Atlas as an enterprise humanoid for industrial material handling. On January 5, 2026, it said manufacturing would begin immediately and that deployments at Hyundai and Google DeepMind were scheduled during 2026. Those were plans announced at that time; they do not, by themselves, confirm that deployments have since taken place.
What sensors does Atlas use?
Boston Dynamics’ sales sheet lists tactile fingers and palm and a 360-degree camera view. In its engine-cover sequencing demonstration, the company describes a broader sensing loop that includes vision, force and proprioceptive sensing. Proprioception is information about the robot’s own body and movement; it helps the system assess how its actions are going, rather than relying only on an outside view.

For that task, a machine-learning vision model detects and locates fixtures and bins. Atlas also estimates the state of objects it is handling as the work proceeds. This matters because picking and placing are not just one-time visual decisions: the robot needs to keep track of an object during manipulation and respond if the situation changes.
The public descriptions do not specify the camera count, sensor manufacturers, exact placement of force sensors or the detailed algorithm that combines sensor inputs. A 2025 announcement with LG Innotek described collaboration on vision-sensing components intended to help Atlas perceive in low visibility, poor weather and darkness. That announcement is evidence of a development effort, not proof of a particular sensor configuration in every deployed robot.

How does Atlas move?
The current Atlas uses electric actuation. Boston Dynamics says the redesign reduces complexity and supports quieter operation and improved energy efficiency compared with the retired hydraulic generation. The company also describes Atlas as having 56 degrees of freedom and continuous joint range of motion. Degrees of freedom indicate the number of independently controllable movement dimensions; they do not, on their own, explain how fast, strong or precise any particular joint is.
Boston Dynamics has discussed large behavior models for full-body control and whole-body mobility and manipulation as development areas. That gives a high-level picture of the control challenge: the robot must coordinate its body and hands while moving through and working within an environment. The company has not publicly identified the current product’s motor models, transmission or gearing design, joint-level torque figures, or complete control-system architecture. Those details cannot be reliably inferred from the headline specifications.

How does Atlas handle a task autonomously?
Boston Dynamics’ “Atlas Goes Hands On” demonstration shows Atlas moving engine covers from supplier containers to a mobile sequencing dolly. The company describes the following process:
- Receive task information: Atlas is given the locations of the bins it must work with.
- Perceive the workspace: A machine-learning vision model detects and locates bins and environmental fixtures.
- Choose and carry out a grasp: A specialized grasping policy selects how to take hold of an object.
- Track what is being handled: Atlas continuously estimates the state of manipulated objects as it works.
- Generate and adjust movement: The demonstration says Atlas generates movements autonomously online and responds to changes or failures using vision, force and proprioceptive sensing.
Boston Dynamics says the demonstrated movements are neither prescribed in advance nor teleoperated. It describes responses to events such as an unsuccessful insertion, a trip or a collision. This establishes what the company says Atlas can do in that particular demonstration; it does not establish that every task requires no human setup, supervision or exception handling.

Payload categories are not interchangeable: the stated instantaneous capacity is not a sustained rating, and the one-handed figure is a separate measure. Likewise, the sheet’s two-hour battery figure is specifically associated with heavy lifting, rather than being a general replacement for its four-hour stated battery life. These figures describe vendor specifications; they do not establish how Atlas performs under every task or operating condition.
How learning and partnerships fit in
Boston Dynamics has described development work using reinforcement learning in simulation and from teleoperated demonstrations, along with improvements to 2D and 3D perception, gripper design and grasp practice. It has also discussed motion-capture and animation pipelines and large behavior models for full-body control. These are company-reported development efforts, not a public map of which software component controls each deployed Atlas.
Company announcements have named NVIDIA in connection with AI compute and learning tools, the Robotics & AI Institute in connection with reinforcement-learning training, Toyota Research Institute for humanoid research and large behavior models, and LG Innotek for vision-sensing development. Announced collaborations identify areas of work; they do not establish that a partner’s technology is a separately upgradeable product module or that any one partner system wholly controls Atlas.
What remains undisclosed
Boston Dynamics’ public materials explain the electric direction, selected sensors, some product specifications and a concrete autonomous task. They do not provide a full engineering blueprint. In particular, they do not establish the detailed actuator construction, exact sensor models and layout, complete autonomy stack, joint-level control loops or independently verified comparative performance. Nor do the cited product and announcement materials independently confirm deployment outcomes. Claims beyond those published details should be treated cautiously.
