MRPL’s share price reflects investors’ expectations for the refinery’s earnings, risks and future performance. A central operating indicator is gross refining margin (GRM), but it is only part of the picture: product crack spreads, inventory gains or losses, throughput, utilization, efficiency, crude sourcing and foreign-exchange movements all influence results. These factors help explain the business’s sensitivity; they do not establish why the share price moved on a particular day or predict where it will go.
How refining margins affect MRPL
A refinery buys crude oil and sells products such as diesel, aviation turbine fuel (ATF) and petrol. A product’s price relative to crude is often described through its crack spread. Because each product has its own market, cracks can move in different directions and affect a refinery’s economics according to what it produces.
MRPL’s reported GRM is not simply a market crack-spread measure. Its results also reflect the crude grades it processes, product yields and mix, volume, operating efficiency and inventory accounting. CRISIL linked MRPL’s FY2025–26 GRM recovery to healthy product cracks and high inventory gains amid crude-price volatility. A reported GRM can therefore improve or weaken for reasons beyond underlying market spreads.
Crude-price direction alone is not a reliable signal of MRPL’s margin or share-price direction. Lower crude can coincide with weaker product prices, while rapid price changes can create inventory gains or losses. Foreign-exchange movements also matter because CRISIL identifies crude-price and FX volatility as risks for the company.

What MRPL’s recent operating results show
MRPL’s reported GRM fell from $10.36 per barrel in FY2023–24 to $4.45 per barrel in FY2024–25, according to its FY2024–25 annual report. CRISIL Ratings reported a recovery to $9.22 per barrel in FY2025–26, compared with $4.45 per barrel in FY2024–25, in its June 2026 rationale. These are fiscal-year figures, not a live margin reading or a forecast.
The annual report said that in FY2024–25 cracks declined 42% for high-speed diesel (HSD), 36% for ATF and 33% for motor spirit (MS, or petrol). It cited changing demand and new refinery supply among the influences. In the report’s words: “The cracks (difference between crude oil & refined product price) of HSD, ATF and MS dropped down by 42%,36% and 33% respectively.” Those product-level declines help explain why record operating volume did not prevent the year’s lower GRM.

Volume and efficiency remain important because a refinery’s total earnings depend on more than the margin earned per barrel. MRPL reported record crude throughput of 18.18 million metric tonnes and distillate yield of 81.93% in FY2024–25. CRISIL reported throughput of about 17 million tonnes at about 113% utilization in FY2025–26. The figures refer to different fiscal years and do not, by themselves, indicate the company’s current operating rate.
Other factors investors may weigh
Crude basket and sourcing
MRPL says it processed a varied crude basket in FY2024–25 and that new crude grades added margin. Flexibility in crude sourcing can help a refinery respond to changing economics, but it does not eliminate exposure to crude-market volatility. CRISIL says around 80% of MRPL’s crude requirement is imported, making global crude prices and currency movements relevant risks.

Profitability and working capital
Profit outcomes can move sharply alongside margins and other operating factors. MRPL reported profit after tax of ₹51 crore in FY2024–25, compared with ₹3,596 crore in FY2023–24. CRISIL reported operating profit before depreciation, interest and tax of approximately ₹6,235 crore in FY2025–26, against approximately ₹2,380 crore in FY2024–25. These are different measures; profit after tax should not be compared directly with operating profit.
CRISIL also identifies working-capital intensity as a monitorable. Refining requires substantial funding for crude purchases, inventories and receivables, so financing needs and borrowing can affect the financial picture alongside operating performance. Its June 2026 rationale describes MRPL as strategically important to its group and reports that ONGC holds an effective 88.58% stake.

A practical framework for following MRPL
When assessing what could influence MRPL’s results—and, in turn, investor expectations—track several indicators together rather than treating one number as decisive:
- Product cracks: Follow diesel/HSD, ATF and petrol/MS separately; broad statements about “refining margins” can hide different product trends.
- Reported GRM: Check the fiscal period and whether inventory effects are part of the reported figure. Do not compare a reported GRM with a market benchmark unless definitions and inventory treatment match.
- Operations: Review throughput, utilization, product yields, efficiency and any maintenance or shutdown information disclosed by the company.
- Feedstock and currency: Consider crude-price volatility, the crude basket and sourcing flexibility alongside foreign-exchange exposure.
- Financial position: Read earnings measures in context and watch working-capital requirements, borrowing and the company’s disclosed financial risks.
MRPL’s official investor page lists annual reports and financial results, including FY2025–26 disclosures. These company filings are useful for checking periods and operating measures; they are not a substitute for assessing valuation or market expectations.

What the operating data cannot tell you about the share price
Operating performance and refining margins can influence investor expectations, but the figures above do not isolate how much any one margin change affected MRPL’s share price. Nor do they establish a current share price, recent return, valuation multiple or a price target. A daily market move can reflect expectations and other factors that these operating disclosures do not measure. Treat fiscal-year results as historical data, not as guidance for the current or next year.
