In the U.S., a 2025 multi-city comparison found both Lidl and Aldi below the all-store average, while Walmart also ranked among the lower-priced conventional chains. In the UK, a separate September 2026 basket put Aldi and Lidl close together and below the other listed supermarkets. Those results use different markets and methods, so they should not be treated as one head-to-head ranking.
What the U.S. price comparison found
Consumers’ Checkbook’s national supermarket comparison, last updated in November 2025, priced a 150-item basket in Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis–St. Paul, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Across those metro areas, ALDI prices were 30–40% below the all-store average, and Lidl prices were about 20–25% below it. These percentages compare each chain with the average—not directly with one another or with Walmart.
Checkbook also found Walmart among the consistently low-priced conventional supermarkets, typically 12–30% below the average in each area. The published national comparison does not establish one percentage by which Lidl is cheaper or more expensive than Walmart. See Consumers’ Checkbook’s national supermarket comparison.
A regional result is not a national result
In a separate Delaware Valley comparison, also last updated in November 2025, Checkbook found ALDI prices 35% below that region’s all-store average and Lidl prices 26% below it. The study used per-unit prices and, where needed, substituted conventional grocers’ cheapest comparable store brands. These are regional findings, not a direct Lidl-versus-Aldi price gap or a forecast of what a particular shopper will pay. Read the Delaware Valley comparison.

What the UK monthly basket found
Which?’s September 2026 comparison covered a 93-item basket and reported these average totals:

In this basket, Aldi averaged £2 less than Lidl with Plus. Lidl Plus reduced Lidl’s reported average by 36p compared with its price without Plus. The table is a UK monthly comparison; it cannot establish U.S. prices or a Lidl-versus-Walmart result, because Walmart is not included and the market, currency, and basket differ. Which? says it compares prices at eight major UK supermarkets monthly, tracking up to 200 branded and own-label products daily during the month and using fieldworkers when online prices are unavailable. Why the basket can change the winner
Aldi and Lidl stock mostly own-brand products and offer a narrower choice of brands and package sizes than conventional supermarkets. That makes an exact brand-for-brand comparison difficult. Checkbook used a modified basket for ALDI, Lidl, and Trader Joe’s in its national study; its Delaware Valley comparison used per-unit prices and comparable low-cost store-brand substitutions where needed. Those choices make the comparison more useful, but they do not make every product identical.
- Compare unit prices: A larger package can have a lower price per ounce or per kilogram even when its shelf price is higher.
- Match product type and quality: A store-brand substitute is not necessarily identical to a national brand in ingredients, size, or specification.
- Account for loyalty pricing: The UK basket reported separate Lidl totals with and without Lidl Plus, just as it distinguished card prices for some other chains.
- Consider availability: A low price matters only if the item and size you need are stocked at your location.
Checkbook attributes part of discount chains’ savings to smaller-format stores with lower overhead than conventional supermarkets. Its comparison also notes their more limited brand and size ranges. Consumers’ Checkbook explains its national comparison method.

What an older Long Island study can—and cannot—tell you
A report by Katrijn Gielens, Professor of Marketing at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, tracked 27 Long Island stores from April 2019 through March 2020. The report was commissioned by Lidl. For prices collected in the first week of March 2020, it found Lidl 33.8% below Stop & Shop and 39.6% below King Kullen. After Lidl entered the market, the study found no observable price differences between Lidl and Aldi or Walmart.
Those are historical findings from one market and a study period ending in 2020, not current shelf prices or a nationwide ranking. Read the Long Island study.

How to use these comparisons for your own grocery budget
Use the published results as context, then compare the prices that apply to your own shopping list. A practical comparison should keep the location, date, package size, product type, and loyalty conditions consistent. The U.S. figures are multi-city findings against local all-store averages; the UK figures are a monthly national tracker’s average basket. Neither is a live quote for a specific store or household.
- Start with your regular list. Include the products and package sizes you actually buy rather than assuming a published basket mirrors your needs.
- Compare local prices for like-for-like items. Check shelf or online prices at the stores available to you, and use unit prices when package sizes differ.
- Separate loyalty prices. Record the price with a required membership or app and the price without it, so the comparison reflects whether you would use that offer.
- Include practical trade-offs. Consider whether the store carries your preferred brands and sizes and whether its available range lets you complete the shop.
This approach avoids turning an average-basket result into a promise of savings for every shopper. Lidl and Aldi often price below traditional supermarkets in the cited comparisons, while Walmart can also be a low-priced option in the U.S.; the evidence does not name one winner for every place and basket.
