Lidl’s private-label strategy means shoppers will find a curated range built largely around the retailer’s own brands, rather than a wide choice of national brands in every category. That can make Lidl own-brand products worth comparing for value, but it does not establish that every item is cheaper or equal in quality to a branded alternative. The figures and sourcing practices vary by country, so check the specific product and the Lidl market you shop in.
Why does Lidl sell so many own-brand products?
Lidl says it curates its assortment and works with vendors to source products under its own labels, instead of carrying countless brands in each category. Its global corporate proposition emphasizes quality, price leadership, simplicity, responsibility, and supplier partnerships. In practice, a focused assortment can mean fewer familiar brand choices on the shelf, alongside a range Lidl can shape with suppliers.
Lidl US says around 80% of its products are private label. That is a US-specific company figure, not a global share. Lidl’s global corporate overview describes a core assortment of around 3,700 products, but that figure does not establish that every country carries the same items or assortment size.
The retailer also describes operating choices intended to support low prices: keeping overhead low, asking shoppers to bring their own bags, and displaying products in delivery boxes to reduce restocking time. These are Lidl US’s explanations of its operating model, not an independent analysis showing how much any one practice reduces prices.

Are Lidl own-brand products good value?
They may be, but value is product-specific. Lidl US says its private-label products undergo taste, quality, and sensory testing. That describes the company’s stated process; it is not a published independent comparison with national brands, nor proof that every Lidl item will suit a particular shopper.

- Unit price and pack size: Compare the price per kilogram, litre, or other standard unit, not only the shelf price. Check that pack sizes are comparable.
- Ingredients and nutrition: Look at the product specification, dietary suitability, and nutritional information that matter to you.
- Origin and certification: Check the label on the item itself; sourcing and certifications can differ by product.
- Availability and offer type: Note whether it is a regular line or a limited-time item, and account for promotions on either product.
- Brand choice: Decide whether you value a wider choice of brands or want a particular familiar brand enough to pay its price.
The company figures available here do not establish a current, comparable grocery basket proving Lidl is always the cheapest. A useful comparison is the one between the actual products, sizes, and prices available to you.
Are Lidl products locally sourced?
Some are sourced locally or regionally, and some are imported. Lidl US says it works with local and regional farms and suppliers while also offering imported specialties, so origin should be checked product by product rather than inferred from the retailer’s overall strategy.

Lidl Great Britain reported that two-thirds of its products came from British suppliers in the financial year ending 28 February 2025. It also said that 100% of its fresh everyday own-label beef, pork, chicken, milk, butter, cream, and eggs came from British suppliers. Those are Lidl GB figures for the stated period and categories, not a claim about other countries or every Lidl product. Lidl GB’s FY2025 results release sets out the figures.
What do Lidl’s ranges and sourcing initiatives cover?
Plant-based products
Lidl reports around 1,000 plant-based items globally, including more than 650 alternatives under its Vemondo brand. The company says most national companies offer vegan products under Vemondo, though some countries may include vegetarian items too. This global count does not guarantee a particular item or range is available at a local store.

Tablet chocolate and cocoa sourcing
In March 2026, Lidl said it moved its permanent-listing private-label tablet chocolate assortment in five countries to the Fairtrade Living Income Program. The company says the initiative is intended to help close the income gap for cocoa farmers in participating cooperatives in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire while keeping chocolate affordable. The statement does not cover all Lidl chocolate, seasonal or promotional items, or every Lidl country. Lidl’s announcement describes the initiative’s scope.

Lidl’s global corporate overview reports €140.2 billion in store revenue for fiscal year 2025. Lidl GB, for the financial year ending 28 February 2025, reported £11.7 billion in turnover, up 7.9%, and 38 million more customer visits than the preceding year. It also reported that two-thirds of its products came from British suppliers.

These are company-reported business and sourcing figures. They do not isolate private-label products as the cause of sales or customer growth; price investment, store investment, customer loyalty, and other factors may also matter. The global overview reports around 13,000 stores in 32 countries, while Lidl US gives a 31-country footprint snapshot. Because the pages may reflect different update timings or definitions, those counts should not be combined or treated as a single fixed total.
How to make the strategy useful to your grocery budget
- Start with the item you actually buy. Compare the Lidl product with the brand or alternative you would otherwise choose, not with a broad assumption about all own-label goods.
- Compare like with like. Use unit price, pack size, ingredients, nutrition, and product specification to judge whether the options meet the same need.
- Check the label for origin and certification. Country-level sourcing figures do not tell you where an individual item was made or grown.
- Factor in choice and availability. If Lidl does not stock your preferred brand or a suitable substitute, that trade-off may matter more than the listed price.
- Recheck the price when you shop. Promotions, product ranges, and availability can change; compare the shelf labels at the time of purchase.
Lidl’s private-label model gives shoppers a substantial set of retailer-branded options and, in some categories, fewer national-brand choices. Whether that works as value for your household depends on the individual product, your local range, and what you are willing to trade for price or convenience.
