There is no single best freelancing website for every beginner. Choose based on how you want to find clients: apply to projects, sell a packaged service, bid against other freelancers, show a portfolio, or take local jobs. Upwork and Fiverr are the clearest starting points for many online services, but the right choice depends on your skills, comfort with pitching, fees, and location.
This is a shortlist of 21 places to investigate—not a verified ranking of current fees, signup eligibility, or earning potential. Platform terms and availability can change, so confirm the current rules before paying for a membership or investing time in a profile.
How to choose a freelancing website as a beginner
Start with the service you can deliver, then match it to the platform’s work-finding model. The International Labour Organization describes general online-service platforms as connecting freelancers with clients for work such as writing, coding, and design. Other services focus on a specialist field, job listings, portfolio discovery, or in-person tasks.
- Prefer applying for defined projects? Consider a proposal marketplace such as Upwork.
- Can you package a repeatable service? Fiverr’s gig listings let clients purchase a defined offer.
- Want to compete for open work? Freelancer.com uses bids and also runs design contests.
- Have a strong specialist portfolio? A curated or niche platform may fit, but screening can make it less accessible to newcomers.
- Want employment listings as well as freelance work? A remote-work job board is a different route from a marketplace.
- Offer a physical local service? A local-task platform may be relevant; it will not replace an online marketplace for writing or coding.
Before joining, compare the current freelancer fee, any proposal credits or membership charges, payout options and timing, payment protection, and country eligibility. A listing or account does not guarantee clients or income. A focused offer, a few relevant samples, and careful client screening are more useful than creating profiles everywhere.

21 freelancing websites and platforms to consider
1. Upwork: project applications and longer engagements
Upwork supports hourly and fixed-price contracts across more than 130 categories, according to its 2026 platform overview. Freelancers submit proposals and may use Connects. The platform also describes time tracking, contracts, and dispute resolution. This model suits people prepared to pitch for specific work and potentially develop longer client relationships. Upwork characterizes its platform as suitable for beginners, but that is the company’s assessment, not independent evidence of a beginner’s odds of winning work. Its 2026 comparison reports a freelancer service fee of 0%–15% per contract; check current official terms for the contract in question.
2. Fiverr: packaged services buyers can order
Fiverr is organized around “gigs”: a defined service with a deliverable, price, and timeline. Buyers can find and purchase an offer rather than waiting for a freelancer to apply to a job. It can suit a beginner who can clearly scope a repeatable service, such as a specific design deliverable or editing task. Upwork’s comparison reports a 20% Fiverr freelancer fee; verify Fiverr’s current seller terms, and account for any other applicable payout or currency costs.
3. Freelancer.com: open bids and design contests
Freelancer.com lets clients post projects for freelancers to bid on and includes design contests. Upwork’s 2026 comparison reports a fee of 10% or a $5 minimum on most projects, as well as optional membership or upgrade costs and an account-balance requirement before bidding. These are claims from Upwork’s comparison, not a substitute for Freelancer.com’s live fee schedule. Review the platform’s current bidding, balance, and fee rules before committing funds.
4. PeoplePerHour: general online services
The ILO includes PeoplePerHour among general online-service platforms. The evidence available here does not establish its present-day fees, acceptance rules, country availability, or payment terms. Check its current official terms before treating it as an accessible or low-cost starting point.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the fee figures do—and do not—tell you
Upwork’s 2026 comparison reports a 0%–15% freelancer service fee per contract for Upwork, 10% or a $5 minimum on most Freelancer.com projects, and a 20% Fiverr freelancer fee. These figures are attributed to Upwork’s comparison, not presented as independently verified current fee schedules. They are not a complete measure of what you will keep: proposal credits, paid memberships or upgrades, payout charges, taxes, and currency conversion may affect the total. Check the platform’s official current terms for your country and transaction before deciding which option costs less.
A sensible first-platform plan
- Define one narrow service. State what you will deliver, who it helps, and what is outside the scope. A specific offer is easier to assess than a broad claim to do “anything.”
- Prepare relevant samples. Show work that resembles the service you intend to sell. Do not imply client experience or results you do not have.
- Choose one or two matching models. Try a proposal marketplace if you are willing to pitch; try a gig marketplace if the work can be packaged; consider a niche service only if you meet its specialty and screening expectations.
- Read the current terms before spending. Confirm fees, any upfront balance or subscription, payment timing and protection, eligibility, and dispute rules directly with the platform.
- Screen clients and scope carefully. Agree on deliverables, deadlines, revisions, communication, and payment milestones before starting. Use the platform’s supported contract and payment process where applicable.
- Review the result before expanding. After you have tested the fit, decide whether the platform’s leads, costs, and workflow justify maintaining the profile or trying another channel.
How to use this list without overcommitting
For online writing, coding, design, and similar services, begin by comparing the general project and packaged-offer models—especially Upwork and Fiverr—then investigate a specialist platform only if your skill matches its focus. If you prefer contests or open bids, study Freelancer.com’s current costs and rules first. If you provide in-person services, assess local-task platforms separately. Job boards and portfolio networks can support discovery, but they do not necessarily provide marketplace contracting or payment protection.
