You cannot make a token launch bot-proof with one setting or contract feature. The practical approach is to separate three threats—fast automated buying, transaction ordering and visibility, and one person claiming through many wallets—then choose proportionate controls for each. Use launch rules to limit easy extraction, keep contract restrictions simple and tested, and treat wallet links as risk signals rather than proof of shared ownership.
Know which launch threat you are trying to reduce
“Bots” can refer to different behaviors, and a defense aimed at one may do nothing about another. A sniper bot watches for a launch condition and buys quickly; transaction-ordering attacks exploit the visibility or ordering of pending transactions; a Sybil attacker creates or controls multiple addresses to collect extra allocations. A token launch can face more than one of these at once.
- Rapid accumulation: automated buyers race to acquire tokens as trading opens. Contract rules can delay or constrain certain transactions, but a determined operator may use multiple wallets.
- Transaction exposure or ordering: a pending public transaction may be visible to other market participants before it is included. Private routing can reduce public-mempool exposure for that transaction, subject to provider and builder trust.
- Duplicate allocations: an attacker uses multiple addresses to bypass a per-wallet cap or qualify repeatedly for an airdrop. This is an allocation and identity-inference problem, not merely a transaction-speed problem.
Ethereum proof-of-stake has economic measures intended to make attacks on validator control costly. That consensus-level Sybil resistance does not prevent one person from creating multiple wallets to claim a token allocation; ethereum.org’s consensus documentation describes the boundary between those problems.
Compare protections by the problem they address
| Approach | Most relevant threat | Main trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Trading gates, temporary limits, launch taxes, or blocklists in the token contract | Rapid accumulation during a defined launch window | Added code and privileged controls can harm legitimate trading; address splitting can bypass wallet-level limits. These mechanisms are documented in sampled contracts, not proven universal defenses. Cernera et al.’s sniper-bot study |
| Private transaction submission | Public-mempool visibility of an individual Ethereum transaction | Relies on the private-routing provider and builders; does not determine who qualifies for an allocation. Flashbots MEV Protection Overview and Quick Start |
| Eligibility rules and wallet-cluster review | Duplicate claims or allocations across addresses | Heuristics can misclassify unrelated users, while attackers can adapt. Identity checks, collateral, and activity requirements each impose different costs. Fighting Sybils in Airdrops and Uniswap Incentive Design Analysis |
| Auction or other structured launch mechanics | Launch price discovery and the mechanics of initial distribution | Specific formats have specific implementation constraints; documentation does not establish immunity to sniping. Uniswap Liquidity Launcher technical reference |
Reduce the advantage of launch-time snipers
Some token contracts use trading delays or gates, purchase or transfer limits, temporary taxes, transaction-frequency restrictions, or blocklists. These controls can buy time or increase the cost of rapid accumulation; their presence in deployed contracts does not show that they reliably stop determined attackers. The empirical study of Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain token contracts documents these patterns, but its observations should not be read as a current rate of use across either whole network.

In that study’s sampled contracts, the authors found at least one of the examined anti-sniper mechanisms in 34.4% of Ethereum contracts and 36.2% of BNB Smart Chain contracts. These are dataset-specific measurements, not chain-wide prevalence estimates or evidence that the measures worked.
If you choose a contract restriction, publish the exact rule rather than calling the token “anti-bot protected.” State when it starts and ends, which transactions it affects, whether any addresses are exempt, and who can change or remove it. A per-wallet cap limits a single address, not a single person; address splitting can defeat that distinction.
Test the rule against ordinary use
Before deployment, test expected launch flows and failure cases, including transfers to exchanges or other contracts where relevant. Confirm that restrictions do not accidentally block intended users or remain active longer than announced. Review the contract’s administrative powers and the precise method for ending a gate, tax, or other temporary control. These checks matter because extra launch logic creates more paths that users and operators must understand.

Choose launch mechanics for their documented behavior, not a promise of fairness
Uniswap’s Liquidity Launcher documentation describes two specific strategies, not universal launch standards. Its InstantLaunchStrategy creates a fixed-supply token in a native-ETH-paired v4 pool in one call. Its LBPStrategy runs an auction, then migrates raised funds and reserved tokens into a pool at the clearing price. These mechanics may suit different distribution and price-discovery goals, but the documentation does not claim either is immune to sniping.
For that launcher specifically, the deployment guide warns that tokens temporarily held by the launcher can be distributed by anyone if acquisition and distribution are split across transactions. Its supported flow batches acquisition and distribution atomically. The technical reference also says rebasing and fee-on-transfer tokens are unsupported. Those constraints apply to this launcher; they are not general ERC-20 rules.
Do not adopt an auction or launcher simply because it sounds resistant to bots. Check the actual chain, pool and token configuration, parameters, trust assumptions, and operational sequence against the implementation you intend to deploy.

Design a Sybil-resistant allocation without pretending wallets are people
For an airdrop or capped sale, first ask what extra benefit an additional address creates and what legitimate participants must do to qualify. A limit of one allocation per address is easy to state, but it does not establish one allocation per person.
Fighting Sybils in Airdrops, a 2022 paper, studies ways to cluster addresses using similarities in decentralized-application activity and sequential or radial token-funding patterns, including common-funder flows. Such signals can support review or a risk score; they are not plug-and-play identity proof. Unrelated users can share a funder or activity pattern, and attackers can vary behavior.
Different eligibility methods trade off privacy, access, and resistance to gaming. The Uniswap governance incentive analysis discusses identity verification as a privacy and access cost, collateral as a barrier that can favor larger holders, and activity-pattern models as vulnerable to adaptation. If you use identity, economic friction, social attestations, past activity, or human review, explain the standard and how a participant can appeal a denial. Do not silently convert a heuristic into a claim of proven common ownership.

Use private routing only for its narrower purpose
Flashbots Protect describes sending Ethereum transactions through a private mempool to hide them from public-mempool frontrunning and sandwich bots. That can reduce one kind of exposure for a buyer’s pending transaction. It does not make an airdrop Sybil-resistant, keep the launch hidden after a transaction is included, or guarantee that the transaction lands before competing transactions.
There is also a trust trade-off: Flashbots’ Quick Start says users trust builders not to frontrun or disclose a transaction sent to them. In fast mode, transaction information is shared with registered builders and TEE searchers. Check the current RPC configuration and supported network before relying on the feature; the documentation here is Ethereum-specific, not guidance for every chain.
Plan and communicate the controls before launch
- Map the threat to the control. Decide whether the priority is launch-time accumulation, public visibility of pending transactions, or duplicate allocation claims. Do not treat one measure as covering all three.
- Set proportional eligibility and trading rules. Define caps, time windows, qualification criteria, exemptions, and any human-review process. Consider the burden on ordinary participants as well as the bypass cost for an attacker.
- Review implementation and authority. Test contract behavior and compatibility; document which admin can change settings, what can be changed, and when temporary rules expire. For a third-party launcher, follow that implementation’s specific operational requirements.
- Publish the process before users act. Explain how claims or purchases work, what information is collected, how suspected clusters are reviewed, and how to appeal. Be precise about what a control can reduce rather than promising a bot-proof launch.
The available evidence does not establish a universal technical defense, reliable ground truth for Sybil ownership, or a chain-wide effectiveness rate for a combined protection stack. The cited sniper-contract study covers Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, while Flashbots’ private-transaction guidance is Ethereum-specific; these findings should not be generalized to Solana or other launch platforms without chain-specific documentation.
