A digital asset treasury (DAT) is a company strategy of holding cryptocurrency on the company’s balance sheet, often as a major reserve or a central part of its business model. Investors who buy the company’s shares get indirect exposure to those holdings—not ownership of a fixed amount of crypto. The shares also reflect the company’s operations, financing, liabilities and market sentiment.
What a digital asset treasury is—and what it is not
“Digital asset treasury” is a market description, not a standardized legal structure. The Block Research defines DAT companies as publicly traded firms that accumulate cryptoassets as a core business strategy. A company may keep an operating business, change its investment policy, raise capital or use its holdings in different ways. The Block Research’s overview was updated June 3, 2026.
A DAT is not simply crypto in a company account. Its policy, funding, custody, financial obligations and governance shape how the strategy works—and what risks shareholders take.
- It is not direct crypto ownership. A shareholder owns company stock, not coins in a personal wallet. The company controls its assets under its own policies and custody arrangements.
- It is not a crypto ETF. A DAT is a company with a balance sheet and potentially other business lines. An ETF is a fund designed to track an underlying asset. Neither structure should be assumed to match spot crypto perfectly; a company share can also respond to factors beyond the value of its holdings. The Block Research discusses the distinction.
- It is not cash. Crypto can be volatile and may be less dependable than cash equivalents for meeting near-term obligations such as payroll or debt service. A 2026 SEC-filed prospectus and a 2026 issuer annual report describe these liquidity concerns.
How a company builds and manages a crypto treasury
Set a policy and choose assets
The board and management decide whether to hold digital assets, which assets to hold, how much capital to allocate and what approvals or controls apply. They also arrange custody and trade execution. A company’s filings and public disclosures are where investors can check its stated policy, custody model and risk controls.

Fund purchases
A company can use cash generated by operations, raise capital by issuing shares, borrow through debt financing, or combine these sources. Strategy says it uses proceeds from equity and debt financings as well as operating cash flow to accumulate Bitcoin. That is the company’s description of its own approach, not a rule followed by every DAT. Strategy’s investor-relations page describes its funding sources.
Funding choices matter to shareholders. Issuing shares can change the number of shares representing the business; borrowing adds obligations and can increase the company’s sensitivity to changes in crypto prices. The effects depend on the company’s capital structure and terms of financing.

Hold, sell or put assets to work
Holding crypto does not mean a company must leave it untouched. Depending on its policy and circumstances, it may retain assets, sell some to fund operations, lend them, trade them or pledge them as collateral. For example, MARA Holdings’ 2025 Form 10-K describes treasury holdings, lending, trading, borrowing against Bitcoin and sales. The company reported approximately 53,822 bitcoin with a carrying value of approximately $4.7 billion as of December 31, 2025; those are company-reported figures for that date, not a market-wide measure.
What owning DAT shares means for an investor
A public company can offer a familiar brokerage route to indirect crypto exposure, but a share is not a receipt for a fixed quantity of Bitcoin or another token. The stock’s value may reflect the crypto holdings as well as operating revenue and costs, cash needs, debt, share issuance, governance and investor demand. Some DATs use debt to finance purchases, which can amplify the impact of price moves in either direction. Structures vary, so it is inaccurate to call every DAT a “leveraged ETF.” The Block Research outlines these differences.

The Block Research reported more than 200 public companies using variations of the DAT model across a dozen cryptoassets in its update of June 3, 2026. This is a secondary-source industry count, not an official census, and it does not establish how many companies follow the strategy today.

The distinction matters when comparing exposures: a DAT share includes company-specific risks that a fund designed to track an asset does not share in the same way. This comparison is structural; it does not assess any particular ETF or company.

Risks to check before investing
Crypto price swings and reported results
Sharp changes in crypto prices can affect the value of a company’s holdings and its reported financial results. How those changes appear in financial statements depends on the applicable accounting framework and the assets covered.
Liquidity and access
Crypto holdings may not be as readily available as cash when a company needs to pay bills, particularly during market disruption. Custodian insolvency, access restrictions, or failures by exchanges and execution partners can also impair access or affect value. An issuer’s 2026 annual report warns that its digital assets may be less liquid than cash equivalents and may not serve liquidity needs to the same extent. Read the filing’s risk disclosures.

Borrowing and collateral
If a company borrows against crypto, a price decline or financing obligation can increase pressure to refinance or sell assets. The consequences depend on the loan terms, collateral arrangements, cash available and the company’s ability to meet its obligations.
Concentration and governance
The more a company’s finances and identity depend on one volatile asset, the more its results and valuation may respond to that asset. Investors can review company disclosures for allocation policy, approvals, custody, financing, risk controls and the role of the operating business.
Accounting treatment
A 2026 issuer annual report states that, after adopting ASU 2023-08, the company measures its bitcoin at fair value and recognizes fair-value changes in net income each reporting period. That describes the filing’s stated policy for its bitcoin holdings; accounting requirements depend on the applicable reporting framework and asset scope. See the issuer’s annual report.
How to evaluate a specific DAT
Before treating a company as a way to gain crypto exposure, read its latest filings and ask:
- Which assets does it hold, and what policy governs purchases, sales, lending or collateral use?
- How were holdings funded—operating cash, new shares, debt or a mix?
- What debt, operating costs and near-term cash needs does it have?
- Who safeguards the assets, and what custody, counterparty or access risks does the company disclose?
- How concentrated is the balance sheet in crypto, and what other operations contribute to the business?
- What accounting treatment applies, and how do changes in asset value affect reported results?
These answers help distinguish a company whose crypto holdings are one part of a broader business from one whose strategy and valuation are especially dependent on those holdings.
