Token Launchpad vs. Launchpool: Which Is Right for a Crypto Project?

A launchpad may support a token sale; a launchpool distributes tokens to participants who lock supported assets. The right choice depends on project goals, stage, and platform rules.

Choose a launchpad when the project needs a token-sale route; choose a launchpool when the main goal is distributing tokens to participants who lock supported assets. The terms are not universal across crypto platforms. Binance, for example, treats Launchpad as its broader token-launch channel, which may include a direct sale, and Launchpool as a specific reward-distribution mechanism. The right fit depends on the project’s stage, fundraising needs, audience, and the platform’s current event terms.

What is the difference between a launchpad and a launchpool?

A launchpad is generally a platform or channel for bringing a token project to market. Depending on the platform and event, it may include a direct token sale. A launchpool is a mechanism for distributing project tokens to participants who commit or lock supported assets for a defined period.

Binance’s June 29, 2026 guide describes Binance Launchpad as the broader token-launch platform and Launchpool as a mechanism within it. In a Binance Launchpool event, participants lock supported assets and receive a proportional share of the project-token reward pool. These are Binance-specific descriptions; other platforms may use the labels differently. Binance Academy’s guide to Launchpad and Launchpool

How the participant mechanics differ

Launchpad: allocation under sale terms

When a launchpad event includes a token sale, participants seek or receive an allocation under that event’s rules. The price, allocation method, eligibility requirements, and sale window are set by the platform and project. A launchpad may offer other launch services too, so confirm whether a particular event is actually a sale.

Launchpool: rewards for locking supported assets

On Binance Launchpool, a participant locks an eligible asset in a designated pool and receives a share of the project-token rewards. Binance says the share is proportional to the participant’s amount relative to the total amount locked in that pool; rewards accrue hourly, and users may claim them before the event ends. Supported assets, pool allocations, and event windows vary by announcement. Receiving reward tokens is not a guarantee of profit: token value can change, and the locked asset and reward token have their own risks. Binance Support: How to Get Started with Binance Launchpool?

Which route fits the project’s objective?

Project need or condition Potentially better fit Why it may fit
Raise funds through a token sale Launchpad, if the platform offers a sale A sale can provide a fundraising event with defined allocation and pricing terms. The specific event determines how it works.
Distribute tokens to participants without making a sale the central mechanism Launchpool Participants earn a share of a reward allocation by locking supported assets; the mechanism centers on distribution rather than buying an allocation.
Token has already been generated or is circulating Check the platform’s eligibility rules Some platform policies distinguish between projects before and after a token generation event; this is not a universal industry rule.
Reach a platform’s existing audience Either, subject to platform fit Compare audience access, participant eligibility, operational requirements, and event terms rather than relying on the product name alone.

A launchpool should not be treated as a substitute for fundraising if the project needs capital from a sale. Likewise, a sale is not automatically the right choice if the priority is broader token distribution. Decide first what the project needs the event to accomplish, then assess whether the platform’s actual mechanics support that goal.

How project stage affects the choice on Binance

Binance Support’s project-listing guidance, published June 18, 2021, says direct listing and Launchpool are open to projects with tokens already circulating or with no coin issued yet, while Launchpad is limited to relatively earlier-stage projects that have not held a token generation event. This is Binance policy as described on that page, not a general definition of launchpads or launchpools; because the guidance dates to 2021, confirm the live application criteria before relying on it. What to verify before choosing a platform or event

  • Objective: Determine whether the project needs fundraising from a sale, token distribution, or a combination supported by the platform.
  • Stage and eligibility: Check whether the project’s token generation status and circulation history meet the platform’s current criteria.
  • Participant mechanics: For a sale, review pricing and allocation rules. For a pool, review eligible assets, lock or farming windows, reward allocation, and claim timing.
  • Reach and access: Assess the platform’s audience alongside verification requirements and geographic restrictions. Availability is not universal.
  • Terms and risk: Read the event announcement and applicable terms; supported assets, reward rates, and other conditions can differ by event and change over time.
  • Application uncertainty: Treat review as a selection process, not a promise of acceptance, listing, project quality, or a successful launch.

What applying to Binance involves—and what it does not promise

Binance describes a listing application process for projects seeking Launchpad or Launchpool consideration. Its guidance says applications are subject to due diligence, recommends that the founder or CEO complete the application, and discusses factors such as the product, team, and adoption. Binance also says that contact after an initial review does not guarantee a listing. An application, an adviser relationship, or a review therefore should not be presented as an acceptance guarantee. Binance Launchpool participant eligibility

Binance Support says Launchpool participants must complete identity verification and be located in an eligible jurisdiction. Its exclusions page states that the listed locations are not exhaustive and may change, so check the current platform rules and event terms before participating.
