How much did Tesla stock fall?
The percentages reported on June 5 were snapshots at different points in a volatile session, not conflicting accounts of one fixed closing figure. Reuters reported Tesla shares down more than 9% in heavy trading. The Associated Press first reported a drop of nearly 10%, then later said shares had plunged more than 14%, reducing Tesla’s market value by about $150 billion. Why did Tesla stock drop nearly 10%?
The immediate catalyst widely cited in contemporaneous coverage was the escalating Musk–Trump dispute over the administration’s tax and spending legislation. Musk criticized the bill; Trump responded publicly and alleged Musk objected because it would remove electric-vehicle purchase tax benefits. That connection is a reported explanation, not proof that one dispute alone determined the share price. Tesla also faced broader business and regulatory concerns. Reuters discussed uncertainty around autonomous-vehicle regulation and investigations involving Tesla driver-assistance systems; those issues provide context, but the reporting does not show that a specific regulatory outcome caused the June 5 decline. What happened after the selloff?
On June 6, 2025, Tesla shares rose nearly 4%, according to Reuters, recovering some of the previous session’s decline. That one-day rebound did not erase the reported June 5 loss or establish a lasting recovery. Reuters, June 6.
By June 9, the Los Angeles Times reported that Argus Research had cut its rating on Tesla to hold and Baird had lowered its rating to neutral. Argus cited concern about the Musk–Trump dispute and the expiration of EV credits. Baird analyst Ben Kallo characterized Musk’s political activity as a key-person risk and raised concerns about uncertainty and potential brand damage. These were analysts’ judgments reported at the time, not established outcomes. The paper also reported that Tesla was about 27% down year to date as of June 9, 2025—a historical measure, not a current performance figure. Los Angeles Times, June 9.

What the episode does—and does not—show
