A snowstorm warning does not automatically mean every Air Canada passenger can change a ticket for free. Eligibility depends on whether Air Canada lists your flight’s airport and travel date in its Daily Travel Outlook or otherwise notifies you that your flight is affected. Check the live advisory and your booking before changing plans.
How to check whether your Air Canada flight is affected
- Check the Daily Travel Outlook. Air Canada lists potential disruptions by date, region, and city. The outlook covers Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, and Air Canada Express flights.
- Check your booking and flight status. Confirm that your specific itinerary is included and review any change options shown for it. A storm in your region, by itself, does not establish that your flight qualifies for a waiver.
- Watch for airline notifications. Air Canada says booked passengers are automatically enrolled to receive flight notifications by mobile device or email. Keep an eye on those messages as conditions change.
- Contact Air Canada Vacations if you booked through it. Historical waiver wording reproduced by Travel Radar directed those customers to contact Air Canada Vacations directly; confirm the current instructions for your booking.
Air Canada’s live outlook is the appropriate place to verify current affected locations and dates. A December 30, 2025 report reproduced waiver wording, but it is not proof that the same waiver is active now.
What a free-change waiver does—and does not—promise
In the historical wording reported by Travel Radar, customers travelling on an affected flight could change their booking without penalty, “space permitting.” That describes a conditional option to make a change. It does not guarantee a replacement seat, establish an entitlement to a refund, or apply automatically to every flight near a storm. Check the terms attached to your own itinerary and the current airline notice.
The same distinction matters if your flight is cancelled: a voluntary ticketing waiver and your rights under Canada’s passenger-protection rules are separate questions. A waiver may offer a way to change a booking; it does not, on its own, determine whether the airline owes you a refund, rebooking, or compensation.

How Canadian passenger rights differ from an airline waiver
The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) categorizes disruptions according to their cause, including whether they are within the airline’s control, within its control but required for safety, or outside its control. The obligations differ by category. The CTA identifies meteorological conditions that make safe aircraft operation impossible as outside the airline’s control. That does not mean every weather-related cancellation has the same outcome or automatically qualifies for cash compensation; the applicable circumstances and regulatory category matter.
| Question | Air Canada change waiver | Canadian passenger-protection rules |
|---|---|---|
| What determines eligibility? | Whether the airline identifies your flight as affected and includes it in the applicable waiver terms; historical wording also made changes subject to available space. | The disruption’s cause and applicable regulatory category, assessed under the CTA’s rules. |
| What remedy is addressed? | A permitted booking change without a penalty, if the waiver applies. The historical wording does not establish a general refund or compensation entitlement. | Obligations can differ by category and circumstances; consult the CTA’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations Highlights. |
| Does a snowstorm alone settle the outcome? | No. Check whether your specific flight is covered by the live advisory. | No. Weather-related rights depend on the cause and circumstances, not merely the label “snowstorm.” |
What the reported cancellation figures show
Travel Radar reported 33 Air Canada cancellations and 264 delays on a Sunday, followed by 17 cancellations and 52 delays on a Monday. Its report was last updated December 30, 2025, and the excerpt does not make the exact Sunday and Monday calendar dates clear. These are historical, report-attributed figures—not live totals or current October 2026 counts. They also describe one reported disruption window, not a general rate for how often snowstorms cause Air Canada cancellations.
