A separate settlement announced in 2026 involves state attorneys general and does not, in the available official announcements, establish a payment or new filing process for individual customers.
What the July 14 deadline covered
23andMe and its subsidiaries entered Chapter 11 proceedings in March 2025. The bankruptcy court set July 14, 2025, as the deadline for claims arising from or related to the company’s cybersecurity incident, according to a later bankruptcy filing. The notice therefore concerned a court-supervised bankruptcy claim process, not an open-ended window to report a privacy concern.
Pennsylvania’s attorney general said people whose personal or genetic information was exposed in the 2023 breach might be eligible to file a claim. That guidance did not say every 23andMe customer qualified. The relevant question was whether a person’s information was exposed, not simply whether they had an account.
When claims had to be submitted
- Electronic filing: By 11:59 p.m. Central Time on July 14, 2025.
- Hard-copy claim sent by U.S. mail: By 4:59 p.m. Central Time on July 14, 2025.
Minnesota’s attorney general directed customers to the Kroll bankruptcy claims site for filing. Those were the historical instructions for the 2025 bar date; they should not be read as confirmation that the portal is currently open or that a late claim can now be filed. What customers can do now
Because the filing deadline is past, check current official bankruptcy case materials for any later court orders or case updates before relying on old filing instructions. The sources available here do not establish whether individual customers later received a distribution, whether a new remedy is available, or whether the old claims portal remains open. Do not assume that sending a claim now will be timely or accepted.
In 2025, state guidance also told customers they could consider deleting their genetic data through their 23andMe account settings amid uncertainty about data handling during bankruptcy. That was guidance at the time, not confirmation of current account controls. If you want to remove data now, check the current 23andMe account settings and company privacy information rather than relying on an outdated menu path.

How the 2026 settlement differs from an individual customer claim
On July 14, 2026, a coalition of 42 attorneys general announced a settlement with the bankruptcy trustee over breach-related state claims. New Jersey’s Division of Consumer Affairs reported that the 2023 breach affected 6.9 million people worldwide. Maryland’s attorney general said the states’ recovery was limited to $18 million because the bankruptcy estate had finite funds and competing claims.
That settlement is described as a recovery for states. The cited state announcements do not establish that individual customers will receive money, provide an individual claim form, or announce a new customer filing deadline. A state settlement should not be treated as a substitute for a personal bankruptcy claim or proof of an individual payout.
