AI exposure alone does not establish durable growth—and even a strong business can be a poor investment at an excessive price.
1. What does the company actually do in AI?
Identify the source of exposure
Companies can be connected to AI in very different ways: they may develop AI technology, sell hardware or infrastructure that enables it, provide cloud or software services, or use AI internally. Identify which products, customers, and reported business lines support the company’s AI claims. A mention of AI in marketing or a presentation is not evidence that AI contributes materially to revenue.
Start with the company’s business description and disclosures. The SEC’s investor alert advises investors to review a company’s disclosures and consider whether it appears more focused on promotion than on developing its business. Treat AI-generated summaries or promotional claims as leads to verify, not as substitutes for original filings.
2. Which filings should you read first?
Use the latest annual and quarterly reports
For a U.S. reporting company, find its latest Form 10-K and subsequent Form 10-Q filings through SEC EDGAR. The 10-K’s Business section describes the company’s products and markets; Risk Factors identifies risks the company discloses; and Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) explains management’s view of results and known trends. The financial statements provide information on performance, financial condition, and cash flows. A 10-Q updates interim results.

Filings are a primary source, not a guarantee. The SEC’s Investor.gov explanation of company filings notes: “The SEC does not vouch for the accuracy of a 10-K or 10-Q.” Read management’s explanation alongside the financial statements and other available evidence rather than treating a filing as a forecast or endorsement.
3. Is growth durable and financially sound?
Separate underlying demand from reported growth
Compare results across multiple years and quarters. Where the company reports them, distinguish organic demand and recurring revenue from growth driven by acquisitions, price changes, one-off contracts, or accounting effects. Ask whether the business is growing because customers repeatedly choose its products or because a temporary event inflated a period’s results.
Read revenue, margins, and cash flow together
Revenue growth is only one part of the picture. Check whether operating margins are stable or improving and whether the company generates cash as it grows. The income statement, balance sheet, and cash-flow statement answer different questions; no single line or ratio captures the whole business. The SEC’s financial statement guidance explains these statements, but does not prescribe a universal growth threshold for a company to qualify as a long-term growth investment.
Check what growth requires the company to spend
Review cash, debt, liabilities, capital spending, and cash-flow trends in context. A company building or expanding AI infrastructure may have different investment requirements from a software vendor. Consider whether operating cash generation supports those investments or whether continued growth depends on repeated external financing.

Stress-test the assumptions
Ask how the business would fare if AI adoption were slower than management expects, customers delayed spending, or a competitor offered a cheaper or more efficient alternative. Also consider whether products could become obsolete quickly, supply chains could be disrupted, or regulation could change.
An SEC-filed 2026 fund prospectus identifies slower AI adoption, changes in AI-infrastructure capital spending, product obsolescence, supply-chain disruption, regulation, and competition as risks in the AI-infrastructure and semiconductor-related segments it describes. These are examples to investigate—not predictions, and not risks that affect every AI company equally. Use the company’s own disclosures to determine which are relevant to its business.

Compare like with like
Compare the company with peers that have similar business models, growth profiles, margins, and capital needs. The SEC defines the price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) as share price divided by earnings per share and notes that desirable ratios vary by industry. P/E can be unhelpful when earnings are negative, unusually cyclical, or affected by one-off items. Other valuation measures also require context; there is no universal “fair” multiple that establishes whether an AI stock is attractive.
Use a consistent comparison checklist
| What to compare | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| AI-linked revenue or savings | What products, customers, or operating activities produce the claimed contribution, and how material is it? |
| Growth durability | How much growth comes from recurring or underlying demand rather than acquisitions, pricing, or one-off events? |
| Margins and cash conversion | Does growth translate into operating profitability and cash generation? |
| Balance sheet and investment needs | Can the company fund its plans, and what are its debt, capital-spending, and financing requirements? |
| Customers and competition | How concentrated is demand, and what could weaken the company’s competitive position? |
| Business-cycle and regulatory exposure | How sensitive is the company to chip, cloud, data-center, or software cycles and relevant regulation? |
| Valuation | How does the price compare with companies of similar business models and with this issuer’s earnings and growth profile? |
This is a comparison framework, not a regulator-issued scoring model. If a company does not report a useful figure, do not infer one from an AI label or substitute an unsupported estimate.

6. How do you reduce the risk of a bad decision?
Verify claims and account for uncertainty
Check promotional statements against original disclosures and other reliable primary evidence. The SEC, NASAA, and FINRA warn investors not to rely solely on AI-generated information because it may be inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading. Their alert also describes AI-related fraud and pump-and-dump risks. No single ratio, management claim, or automated summary can establish future performance.
Consider the stock within your portfolio
Decide whether an individual stock fits your investment timeframe, risk tolerance, and overall allocation. Diversification can reduce the risk of excessive concentration in one company or area of the market; it does not show that any particular stock is attractively valued or likely to grow.
