A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Before you buy or send crypto, secure both your Coinbase login and the email account used to confirm new devices. Set a unique password, choose a strong two-step verification method with a backup, limit withdrawals to saved addresses, and know how to respond to unexpected sign-in alerts.
1. Secure your Coinbase password and email first
Use a password that is unique to Coinbase; never reuse a password from email, banking, or another site. A password manager can help generate and store distinct passwords. Coinbase says passwords must be at least eight characters and include uppercase and lowercase letters, a number, and a symbol, but merely meeting those minimums does not make a reused or predictable password safe. Coinbase names 1Password and Dashlane as examples of password managers in its account security guidance.
Protect the email inbox linked to Coinbase just as carefully. Coinbase uses email for new-device confirmation, account alerts, and support communications. Turn on the email provider’s own two-step verification, check that forwarding rules and filters are yours, and remove unfamiliar recovery addresses or recognized devices. If someone can access your email, they may be able to interfere with account alerts or recovery.
2. Choose two-step verification you can recover
Coinbase requires two-step verification (2-step verification). Its setup guidance supports multiple methods, so configure a backup before relying on a single phone, key, or computer. Coinbase recommends stronger options such as passkeys and security keys; it describes SMS as the least secure method. SMS, push, authenticator-app codes, passkeys, and physical keys should not be treated as equally resistant to account takeover.

| Method | Useful when | Planning point |
|---|---|---|
| Passkey | You want a device-based sign-in option supported by Coinbase. | Set up another method as a backup in case the device or passkey is unavailable. |
| Hardware security key | You want a physical key using WebAuthn/FIDO2. | Check compatibility with your device and browser; register a second key or another supported method. |
| Authenticator app (TOTP) | You need a code-based alternative that does not rely on SMS delivery. | Plan for loss of the phone or authenticator access and retain another Coinbase method. |
| Push notification | You want to approve a sign-in on a supported device. | Keep a backup method for when the device is unavailable. |
| SMS | You need an available fallback option. | Coinbase characterizes SMS as its least secure 2-step method; prefer a stronger option where available. |
Coinbase lists these supported combinations: two security keys; a passkey plus a security key; or a passkey plus push notification. Its current options and setup steps are described in Coinbase’s 2-step verification guide.
If you choose a physical key
Look for a hardware key that supports WebAuthn/FIDO2 and works with the device and browser you use to access Coinbase. Coinbase names YubiKey as an example, not a required brand, and advises checking mobile-browser compatibility. Register a second key or a different supported method before depending on the first. Coinbase warns that it cannot recover or replace a lost key, and some connected third-party apps may not support security keys. Test your sign-in and backup route before trading; see Coinbase’s security-key guidance.

3. Add friction to crypto withdrawals
Coinbase’s address-book allowlist restricts sends to addresses you have saved. Address-book management requires 2-step verification, and Coinbase says a newly added address is unavailable for sends until 48 hours have passed. Add intended destinations ahead of time rather than waiting until a transfer is urgent.
Before saving an address, verify the address itself and the asset and network you intend to use. Coinbase’s instructions note that EVM assets use an EVM address; choosing the wrong destination or network can still cause loss. Allowlisting narrows where a send can go, but it cannot prevent a mistaken transfer or an action you approve after being deceived. See Coinbase’s allowlisting instructions.

4. Review sessions, devices, and app access
Before trading, look through Coinbase’s account security settings for active sessions, confirmed devices, and connected apps. Revoke access you do not recognize. Coinbase’s security guidance also recommends using the mobile app’s PIN or biometric protections if available on your device.
Reach Coinbase by opening a saved bookmark or entering its address yourself, especially when a message claims there is an urgent account problem. Do not follow a login link in an unexpected email, text, search ad, or social post.

5. Respond safely to an unexpected sign-in email
An unexpected device-confirmation email may mean someone has used your password and 2-step code to begin signing in. Do not approve a sign-in you did not start. Open Coinbase from your bookmark, then change both your Coinbase password and your email password, review and revoke unfamiliar sessions and devices, and move to a stronger 2-step method with a backup. Coinbase’s response guidance is available in its compromised-account help page.
Be alert for support impersonation during the response. Coinbase says employees will never ask for your password, 2-step verification code, email access, remote-support software, or money to resolve an account issue. Avoid phone numbers, websites, forums, social accounts, and ads that claim to be Coinbase support unless you have verified them through Coinbase’s official site.

6. Treat Account Protection as a limited benefit, not a security control
Coinbase Account Protection is a Coinbase One benefit only for eligible subscribers in supported regions who use a passkey or security key. Coinbase describes coverage for qualifying unauthorized crypto transfers, but excludes transactions you authorized after being deceived, mistakes, and fraudulent activity. Coinbase says the benefit is not insurance and does not cover many losses insurance is intended to cover. Check current eligibility, limits, and terms in your account and Coinbase’s Account Protection disclosures; do not treat possible coverage as a substitute for account safeguards.
